I have discussed this with a SMML member who is knowledgeable in U.S. Naval flags, and am spurred to seek additional opinions and details from other SMML members. Paranthetically, I have been amazed at the number of people who don't know what a Commissioning Pennant is at all, let alone the fact that it should be flown at all times the vessel is in commission. O.K., SMML, have at it!!!! Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Gernot Hassenpflug Subject: Re: Thanks for Help on Derfflinger kit Thanks to all who responded on SMML and by email to my request for opinions on the WSW/H-P kits. I went and bought the WSW kit from PFH, and from what I hear, I am looking forward to it! Cheers, Gernot ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Gernot Hassenpflug Subject: Re: best rails for 1/700 scale Jap destroyers & cruisers Dboykap@aol.com wrote in SMML 1805: >>> (re: 1/700 photo-etch railings...) if not ..which is best??? << Sorry I'm late on this one. IMHO, the Gold Medal Models Ultrafine IJN railings in brass is the way to go. More accurate, more malleable, more variety. <<< I have to add that unless you have some experience with these they can be rather finicky to attach. Joe's World and Fine Molds produce several sets, the latest ones have drooping rails and although not as fine by a long margin as the GMM ones you might want to experiment with a few of those sets. I am working towards scanning all of these and putting them on my webpage as reference. Cheers, Gernot ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Bill & Kaja Michaels" Subject: USCG Kit list has moved! I've changed ISPs, so my web page listing of US Coast Guard model kit subjects has moved as well. The new URL is: http://home.earthlink.net/~billkaja/kitlist.htm My list includes boats, cutters, and aircraft; both modern and period, display and RC. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: USS MIDWAY I was reading about the history of the USS MIDWAY on the Haze Gray and Underway site and am a little mystified about a statement: "In 1986 in Japan; new bulges were added to improve freeboard and seakeeping. The bulges actually made the problem worse, making flight operations impossible in 6-10 foot seas. This problem was never corrected." Does that mean she rolled too much - in 6 to 8 foot waves??? Waves like that are pretty common, it would seem she could only launch/recover in fairly calm water. Anyone know anything about this?? Michael Donegan NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "John Currie" Subject: Re: HP Carrier Kits I have the Courageous and Glorious and both look fine, the flightdecks come in two parts so that you get the extension for Glorious, this is the only area i can find fault at the moment, you will need to heat the after end of Glorious's Flightdeck in hot water and carefully bend it over a suitable piece of Dowel or Broom handle to give it the distinctive curve that it had. There are no A/c in my kit but they are available as a set from HP (i think they are going to release the carriers with the A/c with a slight increase in price)or they should be available from WEM, i will replace the Pom Poms with those from WEM, replace the mast with brass rod, add rails and i think that i should have two great looking Carriers that until now have been unavailable. I think the Furious was reviewed on SMML a couple of months ago, it wasnt given a good write up, hopefully whoever posted it could do so again please, so i can decide whether to go ahead and get one or not. I have not mentioned accuracy of the Dimensions of the carriers as i have not checked yet. Regards John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: Derfflinger Kit - WSW or HP Gernot I know the WSW kit and, as far as I can see, there are no inaccuracies worth mentioning. I don't know the HP kit, but I never got any HP kit which was not more or less disappointing regarding its accuracy. Take a look at the reports mentioned in earlier postings to make your own mind on the quality of the kits. In my opinion, the big advantage for WSW kits is their layout with only a few, but already pre-completed components. The hull, for example, comes with a lot of details and most of the upperworks already molded on. That will save you a lot of filling and sanding. Gun turrets are complete with gun barrels and range finders. To fix seperate gun barrels to a turret can be really nerve-wrecking. Also. in general, WSW kits show more small details than HP kits, and their small parts are of high quality - and can be used. So, despite my connections to WSW, If I had to chose between a HP kit and a WSW kit, there would be no question - even if the WSW kit should be a bit more expensive. Falk Pletscher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: HP carrier kits I saw both, their HMS Furious and their HMS Courageous. The Furious is a real flop in accuracy, as I reported in an earlier posting. The Courageous is better as far as her accuracy goes, but the fitting of parts is a big problem. You will have a lot of sanding, dry-fitting, cutting and filling to get the parts together. As far as I could see, there are also some small parts missing (which should be no real problem), and the building instructions do not harmonize with the plan which is included in the kit. Also the aircraft complement is not correct for the time period. I only had a first look at the kit. It is not really a bad kit, but, in my opinion, it is rather overpriced for what you get. Falk Pletscher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Doug Wilde Subject: Tableware for sale The Thursday Washington Post has this article in the Style section "A wave of dinnerware designed for the U.S. Navy is about to flood the market. More than 100,000 pieces of sturdy blue and white restaurant-style china made during World War II for the Pacific Fleet is being offered for sale by Replacements Ltd., a Greensboro, N.C., company that sells hard-to-find china, silver and crystal patterns. The Navy tableware - from $8 egg cups to $20 dinner plates - is available now on eBay and by month's end directly from the company (800-737-5223; www.replacements.com)." "Liam Sullivan, the company's publicity manager, said the cache of china was never been used. It was discovered in its original packing crates in a civilian's back yard in Escondido, Calif." So now you know. I have not look at this stuff on eBay. The photograph accompanying the story showed a number of styles, "USN" or a fouled anchor with "USN" underneath, flags, etc. Time to get out the plastic. Doug Wilde ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: royrichey@att.net Subject: Turrets The recent comments about the use of the word 'battleship' by the media have inspired me to make my own. Destroyers do not have turrets, They have gun mounts, they may be open, semi-enclosed, or enclosed. A turret is an armored gun housing whose rotating structure extends below into a barbette A gun mount may have an enclosure, but the only part that usually extends below the deck are the ammo hoists and the rotating structure is all above deck. The old navy types need to help the the novice (at terms) talk knowlegeably. Date of availability and a list of what will be on there? << No, except to say that Peter Hall is working on all the 1/400 PE sets (HOOD, SCHARNHORST/GNEISENAU, and PRINZ EUGEN/HIPPER) together. He's also been very busy with some new kit masters (more about those in another post!). The PE sets are coming along nicely, and will be well worth the wait when they're ready. >> Secondly, any further news on the 5" 38 calibre resin replacements for the Tamiya Fletcher class? << We're still waiting on the test shots from the caster. We've no reason to think that there will be any problems, so as soon as we have these in hand we should go to full production. In any event, it shouldn't be long (I know, I know....). On another note, however, some new additions to the Colourcoats line have arrived. The modern RN colours are finally in hand, as are our new clear varnishes in matt, satin, and gloss. AND, the first two Kriegsmarine colours have arrived, meaning the other 10 should be following soon.
