I know, I wanted one bad enough that I took the plunge. If the link works you should see how I'm doing thus far. One of my prize possessions is a hat from a visit of hers to NYC back in the mid-late '80's. I remember a great tour and a great crew. Now that I think of it, she might have been part of a visiting Surface BG, with the Iowa. Iowa made a bunch of visits here, around the time they were planning to homeport her on Staten Island. Dan Kaplan, NYC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: What no Flowers? >> Well, since we have not had any corvettes in the U.S. since the sailing ship days, I will stay out of that one. << No corvettes in the USN? How about the ten Flower class corvettes lent by the RN in response to the U-boat attacks along the Atlantic coast during the "second happy time"? They retained them until the end of the war, despite the impressive output of escorts by the US shipyards, so it sounds as though they liked them. They were given PG (Patrol Gunboat?) prefixes so maybe the USN didn't class them as corvettes. There were also several Modified Flowers which I believe were built for the RN is US yards but eight of the 15 built were retained by the USN and shipped US 3" guns instead of the 4" and 2pdr of the British vessels. Thanks, Chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Colm O'Leary Subject: Egyptian Solar boat kit/plans Hi, I was wondering if anyone on the list had heard if a kit or a set of plans exists for the Cheops Solar boat. Ever since I saw the ship last year I've been intrested in making a model of it but haven't been able to find any plans on the net. The only thing I've been able to find is an article on making a model by Martin R Harrop in Model Shipwright dated September 1983. Does anyone know how I could contact Mr Harrop to get more details? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: When is a cruiser not a cruiser... >> an old WWI cruiser, the HMS Caroline << SIR!! When I was aboard Coral Sea in 74-75 (Oh god, here he goes again with the Coral Sea thing), EM below CPO didn't get to use the ship's laundry. You either made sure you had enough clean clothes to last an at-sea period, or you hand-washed them somehow. << Good grief! How antidiluvian. The ship's laundry in BAINBRIDGE handled the entire crew's requirements. Just toss your dirty clothes in a laundry bag and about once a week they'd come back clean and ready to fold and put back in your locker. Pressed? Well, if you were enlisted that was up to you.
