I assume this means that Trumpeter will have those ship released concurrently. << I corresponded with Tom on that subject earlier this week. Trumpeter is supposed to be doing a test shot on the Hornet the end of July. If the shot produces as desired, production will be started in August. The first container load will likely be delivered to the docks the end of August/first part of September. Barring a typhoon, that will put the container in a US west coast port of entry mid-September. The kits should be at the distributors around the end of September. Rest of the world - figure accordingly. There has been an announced production slip inthe Essex and the Yorktown II. Currently the Essex is scheduled for shipping in October and the Yorktown II in December. Those dates may not be firm. If sales of the Hornet are sluggish, expect that the dates to slip farther. The requirements of making a living now require me to spend time in Avondale and San Diego working on the integration of her electronic warfare systems. Would be wonderful to have a model of an LPD 17 on my desk . . . the real thing in the ship yard is most impressive. Regards, RhinoBones ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Robert Mosher" Subject: Jack Aubrey on film While on vacation in Ireland I found out that there is a film being made of the Jack Aubrey movies - Russell Crowe playing Jack Aubrey. Maturin is to be played by Paul Brittany, and the ship will be played the HMS Rose - a replica frigate. I saw HMS Rose in Newport, RI in 1987 but it is reportedly now based on the West Coast. Robert Mosher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: royrichey@att.net Subject: Re: laundry On the old fram I destroyers I was on when underway it was wash in salt water and rinse once (spareingly) in fresh water. The only major laundry problem we had was when the BT's were cleaning firesides, that was when dungarees tended to disappear. Roy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: self-serve laundry During Vietnam on the KITTY HAWK, in the Department we would just tie a line to our clothes and throw them overboard with the other end tied to railing. The salt water bleached them out really good. Now the airdales would do it from the flight deck, but we being below them on the sponsons would have a little fun. We would tie a shackle on the end of a line and throw it out to the line they had hanging down into the sea with their clothes on the end. If you threw it just right it would wrap around theirs and you could put their line in and cut it and keep the clothes, who ever they fit got them. One day the ships bos'n (a Warrant Officer) put an end to the whole thing when he came out on the sponson and took out a knife and cut all of our own lines (including mine, and said, "Stop making my ship look messy with all these lines hanging over the side" So we went back to stealing from the airdales - They never did figure where their clothes went - or at least never confronted us about it. Just look under the Gunboat heading. You will notice that a lot of the look just like their sisters in the British Navy, except you will see the PG and number on the bow (PG designated for Gunboat in USN) Again, I use Navsource for all the photos that I need - a really great source. I think they are builders models from the N.N. ship yard, in 1/96 scale. I don't recall exactly which classes are represented, but the first BAINBRIDGE, a "fliver", a flush deck 4 piper are there plus one or two of "Gold Plater" typs of the 30's. They are in the passageway that you go down to the gates, so you may have to buy an airline ticket to view them :^) See ya 'all at the NATS, David ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: USS Alaska Camouflage Hi Kostas, A business called "The Floating Drydock," whose web site is located at www.floatingdrydock.com, has "camouflage design sheets" for both the Alaska, CB-1, and her sister ship, the Guam, CB-2. They are listed under "cruisers" in the camouflage design sheet list on the web site. Hope this helps!
