Although, it was tied for fourth place. DD-1 Bainbridge - Commissioned Nov 24, 1902 DD-2 Barry - Commissioned Nov 24, 1902 (tied with DD-1, I guess we have to check on times!) DD-3 Chuancey - Commissioned Nov 20, 1902 DD-4 Dale - Commissioned Oct 2, 1902 DD-5 Decatur - Commissioned May 1902 (woo hoo!! we have a winner!) Ed, Far be it for me to suggest the USN might be tweaking things a bit for their celebrations! DD-5 even had her keel laid and was launched before DD-1 did! I guess it looks better if DD-1 came first. Anyway, I'm sure the display will be superb! and all will enjoy seeing it! Darren ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Russell_Lessard@aigvalic.com Subject: Re: Trumpeter Essex and Hornet On the Trumpeter Hornet... any chance that will be a 1/350 scale. Seems that currently you have to choose between 1/700 scale models, or $700-900 resin 1/350 models. There seems to be an open market for someone to step in and make 1/350 scale kits of the WWII carriers. Hi Russell, Yup, it will be in 1/350 Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "KOSTAS ORNERAKIS" Subject: Re: Uss. Alaska Hi all, I'd like to thank the guys who helped me. All my best Kostas Ornerakis GREECE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Schiefet@cs.com Subject: PT-109 Crew Members From: "Pwesty" >> I was just wondering with the finding of PT-109 here a few week ago. I was just wondering on how many crew members form the boat are still alive, I know that there are 4 dead? Anybody know for sure. << According to the local NPR Radio station no crew members are alive, They reported the last man died In January. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Ted0330@aol.com Subject: New Jersey in Camden Many of you may know the New Jersey is now open as a museum in Camden, NJ, across the Delaware from Philadelphia. Many areas in the hull are not open yet, but will be in the next 6 months. I was told by a docent on the ship that it is still subject to active duty recall, and so the magazines can not be cut open as they are on the Alabama in Mobile. Nonetheles, very worth seeing, and while there you can also see the Olympia on the Philadelphia side of the river. Ted Tsaltas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Ted0330@aol.com Subject: Tamiya Missouri 1944 fit I bought this kit, and am interested in painting it without any camouflage (?sp) scheme. What colors are best for the deck wood, horizontal metal areas, superstructure and hull? Is there a photoetch set for this kit? If so, where can I get it? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Ted Tsaltas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: vorwoldt@flash.net (vorwoldt) Subject: U.S.S. Monitor For civil war naval fans on this list, who may be following the current effort of raising the Monitor's turret, there is a newly listed card model of the U.S.S. Monitor from Paper Models International. I recently got mine in the mail. It is a super detailed 1/150 scale model with a complete interior including the steam engine, cabins, steering apparatus, bulkheads, cannon, etc., with a total of 1,151 parts, and can be built in three versions. The instructions consist mainly of 16 sheets of schematic drawings, showing the whole ship at each stage of construction, with a few enlarged sections The one printed sheet of insructions has the text superimposed on a graphic of the ship which makes that sheet a bit difficult to read. When I finally get around to building it, I will probably reprint many of the parts on slightly heavier paper stock. It is described in the introduction as "A fictictious rendition, designed to be a temprary, demonstrative model, limited in print to 25 copies, available only through Paper Models International." I have no relationship with Paper Models or the designer of the model but felt that some on the list might be interested in knowing that it is available. Jim Vorwoldt, S.J. Chicago, Illinois ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: David Gregory Subject: Italian Landing Craft Inquiry Here is a tough one First, check out this site http://digilander.libero.it/avantisavoiait/Operazione%20C3%20Malta.htm Two questions: 1) In the fifth picture down, there are a dozen small Italian landing craft (the ones closest to the shore). Does anyone have details or (-drool drool-) drawings on these craft? I have seen one other shot of these in Bagnasco's photograhic history of the Italian Navy in WW2 but no mention anywhere else. They look slightly like the German Infantrielandungsboot, or I-lighter. 2) In the third picture down is the former rail ferry "Aspromonte", also known as "Messina il Aspromonte". I am also interested in drawings and details (armamant placement) for this one, too. I have an interesting book titled "Muli del Mare" about the Italian versions of the German F- lighters, the motozattere. Nothing on these other subjects but good detail on the MZ lighters. Thanks, Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Derek Wakefield Subject: Models For Sale Due to a major financial slam dunk, I'm going to have to sell a good portion of my model collection. Most are winged things, but there will be a number of ships included. I'm going to be working up a list in the next few days as time permits. Anyone who might be interested, please contact me offlist and I'll email you the sale list. Please send all inquiries to california_bb44@chatter.com Thanks, Derek Wakefield ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
