Somewhere somehow there was someone in Buships or Pearl that had served aboard her previously and had a soft heart for the old girl and did whatever it took to keep her from the scrap yard, including moving paperwork around such as the need for her as a training ship or whatever - so who knows. Dave, could make an interesting story for Seawaves if we could find the whole story - Lord knows she had a long career. Hey, while I have everyone's attention, does anyone know if it is possible to make prints off of 16mm movie film. In 1936 my dad was aboard the USS WHIPPLE when she collided with the SMITH THOMPSON. Anyway they both went into dry dock the WHIPPLE with a crunched bow and the SMITH THOMPSON with a large hole admidship (unrepairable). So anyway my dad just takes his 16mm camera and acts like he knows what he is doing and starts shooting all this footage of both ships. I have never seen any photos of the angles he has nor the close ups of the admidship damage to the S.T. - any if anyone has any suggestion I would like to get these as prints as the film is deteriorating quickly. I do know about the 16mm to VHS and may go that route. Thanks again all for the info on the ALLEN. However IF I can find that particular drawing in my research, then I add an additional sheet to the subject. It just depends if it can be found in the archives. Thus (from memory) it is included among my drawings for - J, K and N class destroyers (Chris Langtrees recent epic) (even if it was not shown)! Its among my drawings for Flower Class Corvettes, Algerine class minesweepers, other RN destroyer classes, and in particular, most of the British submarines I have listed on my Warship Plans web site www.john-lambert-plans.com If I can find the original information, then I take the time to draw it (and it does take time for the extra sheet). In some areas of the world, when one steamed through a large density of Portuguese man of war, they were a problem. Whilst keeping watch on K3 turbo generator aboard HMS Albion we lost cooling water suction a couple of times. This entailed shutting down, isolating the weed trap which was effectively sealed by having one of these huge jellyfish being sucked up the intake. Oiking it out with a wheelspanner and buttoning up again. I do not recall anyone telling us that the sting from the tentacles was dangerous though. Sea snakes out in the Far east was another dislike. I can recall that we passed through shoals of them, one every few yards for a couple of days. No one liked cleaning out the weed traps with one of them trapped therein. Mind you, they were dead (I hope). Is this the sort of thing I should put on my CV or job application? One only thinks of the good times! Now Boiler Cleans and Dhoby buckets, thats another subject! Yours "Aye" John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Allan Parry" Subject: Re: IJN Shinyo deck striping A scratch built Shinyo - far out! Any pics? As usual there are varying opinions about some IJN CV deck markings. Also, most IJN CVs deck markings varied their markings throughout the war. According to the the excellent Grand Prix book on IJN CVs - Shinyo did not feature any (!) flight deck markings. Model Art's 'Warship Color' shows a different set of markings to the Polish book 'Okrety Lotnicze Japoni' (I've sent you the drawings). In late 1944 if Shinyo's flight deck and hull was camouflaged, it is likely that she would have featured the single dotted centreline as seen on other camouflaged IJN CVs. Take your pick! My username is "c177guy". Although I wrote "no international sales", that restriction doesn't apply to SMMLies.
