I know that things have moved on somewhat in that time and would therefore appreciate advice/tips on updating my knowledge of special tools and techniques. From reading the SMML bulletins I realise that there is a tremendous amount of experience "out there" and if there is a handbook that covers the subject(s) then please advise! I have completed a small model of HMS Ark Royal and am about to start on the 1:350 scale model of USS Arizona, therefore would appreciate all the help I can get!! Looking forward to your suggestions, Ransford "Taff" Rogers CPO R.N. (Retd.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Tsushima or Yalu??? Gernot Hassenpflug is of course right that all three sankeikans took part in Tsushima battle as a part of 5th Division. After all Japanese employed every single ship which could float and be armed, however their role was not even secondary but tertiary IMO. Itsukushima fired 2 heavy shells, Hashidate none and Matsushima (long absent due to the engine faliure) managed to fire whole three!!! In contrast Mikasa fired 124 heavy shells, Shikishima 47, Asashi 142, Kasuga 50 ten inch and 103 eight inch and Nisshin 181 eight inch. Now this is what I call "taking part"!!! After all "Iron Duke" "took part" in WWII too, but just how many people are prepared to choose her 1939 appearance as their modelling project??? My second argument is that with only a slight change in master and with eight small parts added to the sprue (that includes 4 blanks for extra gun ports) both versions could have been achieved and selling them as a separate set would have been a real possibility. Best wishes D.P ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Norman Samish" Subject: superb destroyers Gernot Hassenpflug, Why do you call the IJN DD's "superb destroyers"? The Long Lance torpedoes were certainly superb weapons, but their use wasn't restricted to destroyers. And you speak of the "characters of the officers, and their training and doctrines" as though this increased their effectiveness. "Bushi, the way of the soldier" was the creed of the Japanese in the Pacific War. At http://www.marshallnet.com/~manor/ww2/atrocity.html it tells of many atrocities; e.g., "Jan 1942, Dutch naval POWs taken to the spot where their ship had fired on a Japanese destroyer, decapitated and thrown into the the sea." Did Bushi increase the IJN's effectiveness in defeating an enemy? Norm Samish ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: GHQ Miniatures Does anyone happen to know if the GHQ 1/2400 scale model of the USS San Francisco is in her '42 or '45 fit? I can't seem to find any info one way or the other on the 'net. Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: British "P Boats" During W W 1, the British developed an experimental destroyer, called a "P Boat", which although steam driven, could actually submerge in a "crash dive" at 20 knots !!!!! It was designed to look like a surfaced German U-Boat. Thus it was supposed to be able to approach a German submarine base, on the surface and relatively benignly, do much mischief, and escape in the confusion. Although the boiler fires were extinguished just before submerging, the crew couldn't withstand the high ambient temperatures created by the still-charged boilers inside the closed hull. Consequently the project was abandonded. Our British Cousins are invited to enlighten us further (now there's an offer the more loquacious lads cannot refuse). Hi Folks, Slightly off-topic but it is about a "flying boat" model kitset. See the following webpage http://www.revell.de/cgi-bin/kat/katalog.pl?cmd=overview&KOSCHL=01&grp=9998&ARARTN=04383&modellsuche= Mangled into English by Altavista.com's Babelfish Translation service and yours truly, the kit's detail are as follows: 1:72 kit to be released December 2002. Kit length = 514 mm; wingspan 639mm. Model of flying boat built 1941 c/w 6 x 746 kW engines;airspeed of 390km/h. 514mm long!! Why has Revell,Germany plunked down bales of cash on mega-huge tooling for an obscure Nazi flying boat kit??** Why didn't they instead make a 1/350 scale kit of a Kaiser or a Hilter Navy obscure warship? A kit of SMS BADEN (battleship;1916) would be 521mm @ 1/350. A kit of SMS SCHARNHORST (armoured cruiser;1907) would be 413mm @ 1/350. A kit of SMS Koln (light cruiser;1930) would be 497mm @ 1/350. Surely with the success of their 1/72 S-Boote kit, they should now know good warship kits do sell. Just a moan and whinge first thing on a sunny winter's morning. By the way, anybody seen any shots of a prototype of the BV 222 Viking kit? Sure would look sexy in a diorama with their S-Boote. Cheers, Nick Rogers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "George Peat" Subject: Re: Holes, metric and others Ref the on going discussion covering holes. This I believe has to be take seriously and looked into in depth ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Mark W. McKellar" Subject: Ringo Toys SS France Hi All, I'm going to attempt to build this ancient kit in next few weeks. I think this may be an ex-ITC kit. Has anyone else seen this, have any tips etc???? Also, since the entire hull is black and a significant portion has be painted white, my plan is the prime the whole thing grey, then mask and paint. Does this make sense to anyone else?
