Having purchased molds for complex plastic injection molded parts, it is likely the BV had approval a long, long time ago. With a 26 week+ build cycle, test shots, qualification runs, plus the up from marketing, research, tool design, it is not a snap decision. I can't seem to find any info one way or the other on the 'net. << Devin, I had to put it under my magnifying lenses to tell, but it is definitely in her 42 fit. Complete with bridge wings a tall search light platform. I bought it some time ago, and also bought PE to detail it. In examining the kit, the wood planking seems way out of scale- way too wide. Any opinions about this, and any suggestions about how to fix it (other than buying the Tamiya kit!!) << Replace the secondary 150mm guns with those from the Revell 1/570 Scharnhorst or Gneisenau. They are MUCH superior in terms of shape. Better still, make resin copies of the Scharnhorst or Gneisenau 150mm guns, so you don't waste a complete kit. Since you bought a PE set, I'm assuming that you're going to cut off the plastic railings on the edge of the hull........ David R. I have several "Maru Special", and similar books on warships of the IJN, but they are all in Japanese. As for the conduct and ethics of those in command, I have to agree with John Snyder and Masashi Ito - lets keep the "talk" on model ships and related topics that's what we are all here for. Now I'll climb down off my soap box. Happy Modelling. Chris Preston ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: TerrYBettYS@webtv.net (Terry Sandin) Subject: San Francisco/Bay Area Notes 1. My wife and I took a charter boat to the Suisun Bay MARAD Reserve Fleet today. This 1 1/2 hour trip, which is scheduled the first and last Sunday of each month, helps raise funds for the Historic Ships Memorial Of Pacific Square which is working to bring the U.S.S. Iowa to San Francisco (two members of the association were on board, along with about 25 tourists and ship enthusiasts, to narrate and answer questions). The boat sailed around and through the reserve ships providing good photo opportunites (from water level) and spent about 10 minutes abreast the Iowa. The Reserve Fleet is located about 45 miles East of San Francisco at Benicia (the boat left the marina at Martinez, California--across the strait from Benicia and only 3-5 miles from the ships themselves). Cost was $25.00/person. Bay View Charters conducted the tour. If interested in the cruise or the Iowa see their websites at: www.bayviewcharters.com www.battleshipiowa.org 2. For those living in Northern California or visiting here around Labor Day, I've read that "Sail San Francisco" is scheduled for August 28 - September 2, 2002. The only information I have seen or heard about this so far is that listed on their website. According to their site "over 35 local and international tall ships and historic vessels will participate (in the) six day tall ship festival...promising to be the largest gathering of tall ships in the San Francisco Bay since 1849!" If everything proceeds as planned, we should be hearing a lot more about this from the news media as we get closer to the date. The ships are scheduled to sail under the Golden Gate Bridge on the 28th beginning at noon and then be open to the public through the Labor Day weekend. More information is available on their website: www.sailsanfrancisco.org We attended the 1999 event, which had a fewer number of tall ships in attendence, and it was quite spectacular. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: PXGOLLIN@ctrl.co.uk Subject: IJN Destroyer books Re. Chris Langtree's career opportunity First let me say how impressed I am that someone who is so good at writing a superb book on British Destroyers ("The Kellys") is also good enough at Japanese to contemplate doing one on Japanese destroyers. Secondly, whilst I would personally like a global design history, Steve Wiper has a very valid commercial viewpoint. I think that a lot of us have been impressed with the Japanese, mostly softback, glossy paper books that have been released over the years, but have either not bought them, or bought them only for the photos. An idea might be to "volunteer", in conjunction with your publishers maybe, to act an as intelligent technical translator, and re-publish these books in English. The additional cost would be minimal (therefore more for you, hopefully) and you would have a chance to improve on what had already been done. This would seem to be good for the Japanese publisher and for us, but whether you would get enough out of it is another matter. The same applies, of course, to the various Polish monographs that are being produced, an opportunity for someone. Good luck whatever you chose, and more especially, I hope you enjoy yourself out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: TechnoInfidel@webtv.net (John Collins) Subject: Mr. Langtree's Request Greetings: I would prefer a book (or books) on individual classes of Japanese WWII destroyers, but, in all honesty, I would buy either. I would like to know if anyone has seen the USNI reprint of Chris's book on the Kellys. My experience with UNSI reprints of English books is that USNI uses lower quality paper. This generally is fine for text, but degrades image quality of photographs and fine line drawings. So, would anyone like to comment on the quality of their English or USNI versions of this book? Thanks, John Collins Atlanta, GA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: John_Impenna@hyperion.com Subject: Re: Japanese Destroyers Hi Chris, I would agree with those who have suggested single volumes on each class. Indeed, I would buy any of the classes you mentioned as well as ANY class of IJN DD's that you do. Especially if these are the same quality as your first book. Has there been any further progress on an SMML get-together at the show in New York City next weekend (for those of us too busy and/or broke to go to VA)? Just curious, as I haven't heard anything recently, and it looks like I might actually get one of the days off from work.
