That is ironic, since it was Hitler himself who ordered the new cruiser be given Eugen's name. Perhaps the ship's entire service life could be described as a study in irony. I wonder what Prinz Eugen himself would have thought? Chuck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Peter Subject: Tamiya Mogami A previous post from Nats said that the Tamiya Mogami would be released soon but wondered where... The Mogami is already on the shelves in Japan, so perhaps the Tamiya rep was talking about the US. I haven't bought one, but I did look into the box and can report that at a glance we are talking the usual standards of crisp molding, high parts count, good instructions, all the best. Since the kit is out in Japan, anxious builders should be able to get it from Hobbylink Japan. P.S. I went to a Tamiya-sponsored event at a Tokyo Dept Store. An assembled Mogami was there to see if you looked around, but the company's emphasis seems to be B-I-G on lower end radio control cars, with a good chunk of display space allotted to the big scale (1/16 I think) WWII vehicles-- very expensive. Sadly I saw no mention of the WWII waterline Iowa-class Tamiya has mentioned otherwise. A good friend of mine is a teacher. What he does and has been doing for 15 years or so is running model building classes at his school. His classes are always full and most of the kids start in grade 8 and are still in his classes up till when they leave school. But the thing that's stick in my mind the most is that a lot of them keep in touch with him and are still building models. Now if we could all put pressure on the school systems to bring it in as a course Regards Fred Liedel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: schiefet@cs.com Subject: Re: Future IJN subjects for the Warship Pictorial Series >> Atago Class Cruisers Nagato Class Battleships IJN Destroyers ???????????? << Steve, Is there a New Mexico Class book on the list somewhere? Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: Destroyers On Line Mike, I don't think it has moved--I used the same URL as always and got it: http://www.destroyers.org/ Maybe we're looking at different Destroyers On Line sites????? Rod ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Unexploded Shells (was Lucky Prince Of Wales) You're right: AP ammo had a delayed fuse to allow penetration of armour before detonation. The IJN also used a "diving" shell with a delayed fuse, designed to plunge into the water short of the target and penetrate the underwater hull. As for shells not exploding, the USN had its woes too: there were unexploded 16" shells from MASSACHUSETTS found in Casablanca after she bombarded JEAN BART and French light naval forces. Who and what won for ships? I'll tell you that nats show was impressive. << Best ship was the USS Constitution over in Scratchbuilt & Conversions. The best model there, IMO, was the HMCS Toronto. Other winners included the SAS Kayak, the racing boat (several large gouges in the hull!!), Furutaka, Asahira (?), and the Russian pre-dreadnaught. If I missed some, I apologize.
