This from Monday's Washington Post article on raising the Monitor's turret. "Capt. Chris Murray is the supervisor of diving for the Navy and the project manager...Underwater, he said, his divers approach their target with reverence." "It starts to take shape and it's beautiful," Murray said. "I grew up reading about the Monitor and the Merrimack, and building the models..." It is thick (690 pages) hard to find and usually expensive once you can locate a copy... but definitely worth it. It will cover not only what happened on June 4 but also previous training, air doctrine, organization, etc. Tom K ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: DRPREUL@aol.com Subject: Re: Warship Pictorials Hi Steve, Steve is here in Annapolis staying with Jeanne and I doing research for the upcoming Prinz Eugen book. WOW Steve has found over 300 photos of her. This will be a great book. He is also researching Italian Heavy Cruisers and other Kriegsmarine subjects as well as the New Mexico Class battleships. So many toy boats and not enough bathtubs!!!!!! That is an intriguing proposition, but I have been unable to find any reference to substantiate that. Could the poster please indicate his source? Also "The Big E" by Stafford covers this fairly well. It is out in reprint and can be purchased through the CV6 on-line book store or you can find used ones on the web. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: MIKE.LEONARD@customs.treas.gov Subject: DDG 102 NAVSEA Awards Contract for DDG 102 By Chief Journalist David Nagle, Naval Sea Systems Command Public Affairs WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded a $464 million fixed-price incentive contract to Bath Iron Works (BIW) for the construction of the next Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG 102. The contract is the first awarded under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the Navy, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (NGSS) on June 17. Under the terms of the MOU, BIW transferred construction of four LPD 17 San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships to NGSS shipyards in Pascagoula, Miss., and New Orleans. This agreement is expected to produce significant cost savings for the Navy in addition to increased productivity for both companies. DDG 102 will include a number of warfighting improvements, including the AN/SPY-1D(V) Littoral Radar, providing significant improvements in clutter and jamming environments typical in littoral operations; Cooperative Engagement Capability, a system which will provide real time data sharing and engagement coordination among ships within a battle group; Naval Surface Fire Support, an integrated gun system which extends the range of fire support to Marine Corps ground forces; and the Extended Range Guided Munition, which provides higher caliber, improved guidance munitions to support Marine ground forces. Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are multi-mission guided missile destroyers designed to operate offensively and defensively, independently or as units of carrier battle groups and surface action groups. They support of underway replenishment groups and Marine amphibious task forces in multi-threat environments that include air, surface and subsurface threats. DDG 102 is scheduled for delivery to the Navy in April 2007.
