MITCHELL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODELLERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Katz, Gene S" Subject: Re: Prinz Eugen >> In a recent SMML, a member stated that Prinz Eugen, namesake of the DKM battlecruiser was Jewish. That is an intriguing proposition, but I have been unable to find any reference to substantiate that. Could the poster please indicate his source? << I also find this statement intriguing, and have no knowledge of its correctness one way or another. However, I just skimmed through a new book that deals with the subject of Germans of mixed Jewish heritage (called mischlings under Hitler's racial laws). The author purports that there were quite a few men of Jewish heritage serving in all German armed services during WW1 and even more surprisingly, during WW2! They include a Commander on Adm. Lutjens staff aboard the Bismark, Adm. Rogge, a U-Boat Captain, a U-Boat and Torpedo Boat desk officer, and quite a few other Navymen. Shocked me. Seems that Hitler signed exemption certificates for them based on the Service's need and their experience. Of course, after the war they would make a final decision whether or not they were "real" Arayns. Fascinating subject. Adm. Raeder (sp?) in his memoirs touched on it, mentioning that a few high ranking German-Jewish officers were pentioned off and protected after the racial laws were enacted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Devin" Subject: Re: The First Team I second the recommendation of The First Team as a fantastic book covering the US Carriers and their airgroups (focus on the fighters) from Pearl to Midway. It is thoroughly researched and all statements backed up with facts. There is information in there that just simply can not be found anywhere else. Of the hundreds of history books I own and have read, it is BY FAR my favorite. I was not aware that the title was out of print, having bought mine (and the follow up The First Team and the Guadaulcanal Campaign) new from Barnes and Nobel online last year. Find it and buy it. It's too good not to own. Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject: Graf Spee - 1:150 scale Take a look at this great 1:150 scale waterline model of the Graf Spee built by a former crew member. http://www.bismarck-class.dk/shipmodels/german_models/admiralgrafspeetitsch.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "David Clark" Subject: HMS Nottingham is underway After the installation of 8 tonnes of timber and steel shoring, HMS Nottingham started its voyage to Newcastle (NSW). The Nottingham is being towed backwards to reduce pressure on the damaged hull. David ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "john fiebke" Subject: Re: Lucky ships There is a great irony in "Lucky" ships vs. "unlucky" ones. The ships that survive combat are, almost always, sent to the scrapyard. The sunken ships are still, at least in some condition, still around. For example...the Yorktown class. The "Lucky" ship would be the Enterprise, but the Hornet and Yorktown are still on this earth. The Yorktown looks almost as if she is resting, at peace, far far away from the world that cut up her sistership. j.fiebke ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: Sydney Harbour arrival This is for the Sydney siders..looks a sail training ship came into the harbour today..it is now berted at Garden Island behind the finger wharf, appears to have the Chilean Flag..so for those that are interested For the Newcastle people, lucky you having the Nottingham coming to your city & not Sydney. So she is on her way ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Peter Subject: Paint Mix Datebase This web site: http://www.dana-nield.com/tamiya/viewall.asp has a chart for mixing Tamiya paints into colors not available out of the bottle. The emphasis is on armor and planes, but there is still some useful stuff to be found. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Chuck Messer" Subject: Re: Prinz Eugen >> In a recent SMML, a member stated that Prinz Eugen, namesake of the DKM battlecruiser was Jewish. That is an intriguing proposition, but I have been unable to find any reference to substantiate that. Could the poster please indicate his source? << Happy to, Ken. I got the info from an article in the July 1993 issue of Sea Classic magazine titled, "Hitler's Caged Tiger: The Cruiser Prinz Eugen", by Owen Gault. It includes a nice color photo of Eugen showing wine red turret tops. No indication of the time period for the photo. On page 35, Gault gives the background of the 18th century Field Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire, Prinz Eugen Von Savoyen. He wrote, "The Duke of Savoy was a French Jewish noble who fought for the Austrians after his services were refused by Napoleon Bonaparte because of his timid appearance." Guess you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. I get the impression that Prinz Eugen was an effective leader. It was after his service in the war against Napoleon that I suppose he was made Duke of Savoy. And there you have it. I don't know where Gault got his information. But, it is a great story. Hope this helps. This is the same chapter that hosted the event in 1983. The date set is the first week of August, 2004. Nobody mentioned WHERE the 2004 NATS is going to be! Next year its at Rusty's favorite place in Oky, but let's be optimistic enough to plan ahead. Anybody hear anything? << Phoenix, AZ!!! Rusty White # 20181 Chairman, 2003 IPMS/USA National Convention http://www.ipmsmetrookc.org OKC In 2003! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: 2004 IPMS Nats Bert was asking about the 2004 IPMS Nats. The 2004 IPMS Nats will be in Phoenix, (but its a dry heat) Arizona! Maybe there will be a bus to the world headquarters of Classic Warships. On the 2003 Nationals, Rusty is promising a good time in his hometown. He said that tornados never happen at that time of year. (Look out!) The city is going to open a bus route just for modelers to see the sites of Oklahoma City. Will the bus run by the world headquarters of Flagship Models? All seriousness aside, one of the themes for next year's contest will be "Disguises of War" and is centered on camouflage. Looks like next year will be the time to bring all your brightly painted dazzle camouflage ships for display on the table. Hey Mike Lets not forget Darren Scannell's absolutely beautiful HMCS Toronto which took first in the split category 1:400 and Larger-Powered (Destroyers, Escorts, Frigates, and Corvettes). It was very well done and drew a number of well deserved comments. It was subjected to close inspection - and the detail photos of the real ship that Darren provided supported his interpretation of included details. Well done Darren. The nationals were fun. The cameraderie was great. I saw many old SMML friends and made serveral new acquaintances. It was great to see you guys. The competition was good. For me, the show is more about modelers than the models. Vending was excellent. There were more new ships kits than at any previous nationals that I have attended. I spent a bundle at MB Models--bought three destroyers and one sub. I picked up the new Battlefleet USS Peoria. I agree with James Corley, Darren Scannell's HMCS was the finest ship model in the show even though a USS Constitution was named Best Ship. Scuttlebutt that I heard was that the shear number knots to be tied on the USS Constitution outweighed it's noticable flaws and was therefore deemed superior to the absolutely flawless Toronto. So, apparently, bigger is better and more work is better than quality work. Just scuttlebutt, mind you. You pay your money and you take your chances. Nonetheless, I though Darren's Toronto was great. Darren also showed me and a group of modelers his now famous method of making tips for super glue in a bar about midnight Saturday night. Very cool. Thanks everyone. I had a great time. I hope to see you again next year in Oklahoma City.
