However, since I specialize in Paper ship models, I do have one suggestion for a minor name change... ;-) David T. Sooo, I have to ask some of you why do you put yourself in a position where you are going to be shot down by someone who may or may not be an expert, who may or may not be bias towards you or someone else or a manufacturer, so on, and so on. When I was 12 years old I entered my first art show as a fine artist. A great painting of a prewar Porter class DD. My Mom drove me to the show and I entered it - came back when the show started but could not find it - I asked where was it and they said sorry NO 12 year old painted that, gave it back to me and I cried all the way home. Now in my later years I did enter and did win a lot, until one day it all came back to me and I threw every single ribbon and award out that I had and realized if I wanted ribbons so bad I could buy them by the dozen - what was the point? Now I have a lot of models that I am proud of - but you cannot see them, they are mine and they are just for me. I will never set myself up to be "judged" by someone I do not even know. My paintings, well yes they are on my web site, but I mostly paint for the enjoyment of it and not for money (actually I am a Social Worker - shhhhh!). My greatest satisfaction comes from working with museums and veterans groups. So this takes me back to my original point - do it for yourself, do it for your kids as part of what they will inherit someday - do it for the enjoyment - - but don't do it to try an impress someone - and especially don't do it to be judged by someone else. Climb down from you soap box Mike, it is time for your medication!!!! Online, you could check this: http://hawley.hispeed.com/vietnam/BoatsMisc.htm Although the picture isn't of the best quality, it has a good angle to look into the "cargo area". You could also try: http://www.specialoperations.com/Navy/SBR/default2.html http://www.combatantcraft.org/index.htm or (off-line) - Rottman, Gordon L. Rui Matos (aka Skipper) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Jeff Herne, NJAHOF" Subject: IPMS Regs and Old Ironsides Rusty, Thanks for clarifying the rules for me. I have judged ships, aircraft, and armor at the Regional level, and I've dealt with all sorts of 'judges', the good, the bad, and the ugly. I remember arguing with a judge because he felt the color of a model was incorrect. I told him it was not his job to look at the color, but rather how well it was applied...'but, it's too gray'...ugh. With regards to the Regional with the tankette made of brass, I KNOW that that head armor judge was still under the impression that the 75% rules was still in effect...so, shame on him for going in uninformed...I didn't like him anyway...he actually made each judging team justify to him why each model placed where it did... I can inform you...however, that there are model makers out there that rival the best I've ever seen in IPMS ranks, and yet they rarely visit IPMS events. The late Jim Roberts, a good friend of mine, was perhaps one of the finest ship modelers in the world. I think, being a woodbender myself, that the purists don't necessarily 'look down' on us (the plastic builders). When I bring a resin or plastic model into our 'woodbender' club meeting, the guys, the same guys who build incredible models that I aspire to, are amazed that I can get that much detail into something that small (1/700 is microscopic, and 1/350 is tiny to them). I've done tech sessions on casting resin and doing photoetch, and alot of guys are now building in resin and plastic just so they can finish something in span of months instead of years. The NRG has always been very strict about its rules and regs for their contests, and there has always been an underlying debate about the use of plastics, but it's more along the lines of the long-term effects and molecular breakdowns of the materials. If an NRG member could update us on this, it would make for some interesting reading. I know this debate was quite heated when our club hosted the NRG Nationals in 1997 (8?) in Morristown, NJ. I guess the bottom line is simple...IPMS is no longer IPMS, it's IMS as someone posted earlier. Models are coming out in all sorts of materials now, and it may be time to change with technology... I think the International Nebulous Materials Modelers Society is a good name...just kidding. I think that we maybe missing the point a bit though...I don't model to compete...I used to...and it made me miserable when I got beat...the best part of any model competition is seeing the nice models, meeting old friends, buying more models, and enjoying the day...building something good enough to compete allows me to put something on the table and be an active part of the event, not just a spectator. Geez, this is turning into a book...
