There were only 4 actually built and they were not very successful, and although sent to the Mediterranean, did not see combat. They were made from cut-down K class (K for Krew Killers) steam powered submarines from another ill-fated program. Michael London ( jmalondon@rogers.com) and other SMML people can comment further. The French also created some weird subs about the same time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Re: S.S. Portland To Andrew Jones Peter Jennings informed us that the Portland went down in a hurricane, not a gale, Thanksgiving Day (hurricane in late November?) of 1898. A local TV news reporter (in Boston) identified the ship as a paddle-wheel side steamer (whatever that is). Sheesh, I wish you SMML guys would smarten up and get things right, the way those highly paid TV people do. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Monitors Ah, Jim about your little monitors. You do know how many decks are involved in a 16 inch gun, including lifts, ready storage and magazines, not counting fire control? I think perhaps you monitor would be higher than it is longer. Might have some stability problems!! Mike NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Re: Bombings in W W 2 To Roy Richey I recall another History Channel thingy which stated that the Luftwaffe was indeed targeting only British military targets early in the war, but one sortie accidentally wandered off course in bad weather and mistakenly bombed London. Churchill became enraged and ordered the bombing of German cities in retaliation, thus escalating the carnage. C'est le vie (or le morte, in this case). Like you, I am not espousing either the German or the British version, but am merely pointing out how the History Channel irresponsibly presents things in a one sided fashion. They didn't even check their own conflicting stories. One would think that over 50 years later revisionist historians would have sorted out such claims. My guess is that much of the History Channel's staff consists of young History Majors interning at the History Channel. If so, then shame on the History Channel for presenting their inexperienced researchers' opera as "gospel", another example of incompetence at the Management level. Franklyn P.S. If Will Rogers' comment is true ("All I know is what I read in the newspapers."), then we are indeed in BIG trouble. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Chuck Messer" Subject: Re: Battleships and fire support Has anyone thought of navalizing the MLRS System? With an armored box launcher similar to that used for Tomahawk? MLRS has tremendous range and great accuracy with what are essentially plain, unguided rockets. They would only be useful for long range engagements with land targets, but a 5" or 155 mount could take care of the rest. By the way, someone mentioned building a battleship-like vessel to tear into those fragile stealth ships. Someone is planning to make a movie titled "Dreadnought", a time travel story that pits a stealth ship against the old HMS Dreadnought. I don't know the status of the production. Chuck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Henry Blecha Subject: Starbulletin.com reader referral Take a look at this article I just found on Starbulletin.com. You can read it at: http://starbulletin.com/2002/08/29/news/story1.html I don't know if the whole sory is being sent to you. Interesting reading. Burl as you know is a SMML member. Henry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Michael J. D'Silva" Subject: Re: RN Cruisers Reference Miles wrote: >> One book you might want to look out for is British Cruisers in World War One by R.A. Burt. << Thanks Miles, I've already got that one. However, I don't have the Trotter one, and shall investigate further. Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: PXGOLLIN@ctrl.co.uk Subject: Far Eastern Lion and cruiser Two queries if possible; 1: A few posts ago someone mentioned a possible resin 1/700th kit of the proposed RN WW2 Lion class Battleships by a company possibly named Mirage and/or Ocean. Does anyone know anything about the kit, or have contact details of the company, and most importantly, any information on how to obtain the kits? 2: I know that a Chinese company produced a plastic 1/300th scale kit of the ex-RN Arethusa class cruiser transferred to the Chinese after WW2. Again, does anyone know the name of the kit, the name of the company and how to get hold of one? Thanks, Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: Looking for a model kit >> I'm looking for an Italeri 1/35 Frogmen and boat kit, whcih contains divers and zodiac inflatable boat and outboard. Does anyone happen to have one around that they would be willing to part with? << Matt, I have the Revell 1/35 scale UDT team boat with figures if that is the kit you are talking about. Contact me off line if you are interested. Mike Settle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: John Snyder Subject: New Books at WEM Hi All, We've just received a restock on books from AJ Press, so everything that is in print is in stock. Among these were 4 new Profile Morskie titles: Number 45, USS COLORADO, 32pp, 11 photos, £12.50; Number 47, HMS MALAYA, 32pp, 14 photos, £12.50; Number 48, HMS COLOMBO, 28pp, 6 photos, £12.50; Number 49, HMS PRINCE OF WALES, 32pp, 20 photos. £12.50. As always, the text and photo captions are in Polish, but the books are the usual wealth of well-drawn plans in 1/700 and 1/400, with details drawn in 1/200 and 1/100. Each book includes separate, fold-out plan and profile, deck details, and hull lines, and a fold-out colour plan and profile showing camouflage. The colour renditions, of course, are not true to actual colours. In general the camouflage colours called out are accurate. HOWEVER, while the pattern shown for PRINCE OF WALES is accurate, the colours specified are NOT correct; one of the colours specified--PB10--was a submarine paint! (Anyone wishing to know the correct colours can contact me off-list.) Coming soon from AJ Press: Profile Morskie 51, USS WASP (CV-7); FXXS 6, Japanese Heavy Cruiser MYOKO. We're taking pre-orders for these titles now.
