New Jersey Now, before you start crying from the laughter, lemme explain... I'm originally from up north, just south of Montreal. I've spent lots of time in the Laurentians and Adirondacks...grew up there...and the country is beautiful...Then I moved to Colorado, and the country was even more beautiful... BUT...in both instances, I had to drive at least 50 miles to a hobby shop. (See where this is going?) Now...I'm about 45 minutes outside of Manhattan...and 45 minutes from the Delaware Water Gap....On one side of me I got Broadway, the Yankees, Jets, Rangers, etc..and lots of hobby shops...on the other, river rafting, fishing, hunting, quiet little lakes the NYC tourists have missed...the best of both worlds. Did I mention museums? And a VERY active IPMS chapter? And 24-hour diners? I actually got a job running a museum...how cool is that? I love the country...in my heart I miss it...but I'm far enough away from the NYC hussle to still hear the crickets...and fire sirens are still a rarity around here...ok, there's airplane noise, but I like airplane noise, even at 4am...well, ok, there's also toxic waste sites, Newark, traffic jams, stupid gun laws...but they're far enough away. And the best part, there's sooo many ship modelers in this area, and I've met some of the best people in the biz simply because I live here. So, I think that for right now, quiet little Rockaway NJ is the coolest place around. Does anyone know the story of that. And at anytime during her career did she have 19 1/2 on the side of her conning tower. Can you imagine the ribbing the crew got from the other subs!? I ask because it would make an unusual model - probably have a lot of people do a double take on it. << Norman Friedman agrees with you. In 'U.S. Submarines Through 1945. The 'D' class boat D-3 (Salmon) is listed as SS-19 and the 'G' class boat G-1 (Seal) is listed as SS-19 1/2! No further explanation is given as to how this came to be. I very much doubt that the G-1 ever wore a large white '19.5' on her conning tower, though...early boats if they wore a number at all always wore the number within their class (i.e. G1) rather than the SS number which was assigned much later and only displayed on the boats which survived to WWII. The Friedman book does have a picture of the G-1...it shows her name (Seal) in white on the hull in the approximate area of her bow planes but no number on the conning tower. Somewhere I have what is believed to be photos of Shikari in the Second War in overall white. Of small interest, the S class as a group, were probably the fastest in the R/N. On another subect, that of history, it is my opinion that of all the people who write history only about five percent are actually historians, the rest are just copiers, many of whom are not even very good at that! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Poutre, Joseph A" Subject: Re: Sub question From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com >> I believe one of the old U.S. Navy "G" boats had the distinction of being submarine number SS-19 1/2.
