Jon Skidmore ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: David Miller Subject: Firefighter: nice kit I just received the Revell fireboat kit "Firefighter" (Tower Hobby). Looking it over, it is a '70's kit, that I never knew existed. At first I thought it was a generic subject, until I got on the web and found out that the ship was built in 1937, and used by FDNY. It is still in service (Staten Island) and one of the largest fire boats ever put into service. It is now named Marine 9 (ugh!). Anyway, the model is about 16 inches long, cast in black and white, and the detailing seems very good. I want to build in as per the instructions, which portrays the ship in its early configuration (as judged from web photos). The instructions are not textual, and no real history of the ship is given. I would appreciate any feedback on the kit or ship. I'd also like to see the Pine Island. If I can mention a/c I'd like to see, I'd like to see all the USN WWII in 1/48 in their full form, like the folding mechanism for the wings on the TBF. . . . I compared drawings and it appears to be acceptablly accurate although the plastic appears to be a bit soft. << The turret spacing is a bit off, but all-in-all a buildable kit. >> B/W pictures seem to indicate it is all one color but all my references and the web didn't help determining the color. Question, does anyone have the actual gray color.? << On the morning of December 7, 1941 the Arizona was painted in Measure 1. This called for the hull and superstructure to be painted in Dark Gray (5-D). The masts above the funnel were painted in Light Gray (5-L). The wooden decks were in their natural bright-wood color. The steel decks and fittings were also in 5-D. Good references include the photographic section at the US Naval Historical Center (www.history.navy.mil), NAVSOURCE (www.navsource.org), and the Ship Camouflage website (www.shipcamouflage.com). Accurate paint for these colors is available in the White Ensign ColourCoat line of paints. (I'm sure that John or Caroline at WEM has or will post here too, with an address.) These colors do not have contemporary equivalents with FED-STD numbers. I have recently been made aware of a website which has photos of the relevant packs (even though it is not that of the manufacturer, AB Figures, which has its own website at http://www.ab-figures.demon.co.uk/) and this one may be of help in selecting suitable packs which are not illustrated on the AB site itself. The address is: http://www.eurekamin.com.au/ It is the tank crews that offer the most potential in my view. Remember that they are 20mm tall when you view them! They sent them to us for posting on the Hood Association site some time ago. There were more than that though...different angles in multiple colours (intended to show how the different pieces assemble). The ICM Hood project has seriously stalled, but is not completely dead and buried. Despite what some here may say, or claim to know, I happen to know that there was some actual work carried out. It did get somewhat off the drawing boards (actually, off the computer drawing board in this case). I have confirmed this, but can't give specifics. Suffice it to say the kit/moulds were expanded, but never completed. The design is done, it's now a matter of funding and completing moulds. At this point, it's anyone's guess as to whether she'll ever reach the markets. I hope so, because it will be a good seller (provided the price is not astronomical...which is another key issue of concern standing in the way of production). Frank http://hmshood.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: USS Arizona Hi Frank, If you're modelling her at the time of the attack, she was in Measure 1 camouflage: 5-D Dark Gray on all vertical surfaces up to about the top of the stack, and 1941 5-L Light Gray on the upper masts and fighting tops. Boot-topping was black. Steel decks were 5-D Dark Gray, and wood decks were natural teak. Underwater hull was Norfolk 65A Antifouling Red. If you're modelling her pre-war appearance, the colors will be #5 Standard Navy Gray on all vertical surfaces, steel decks in #20 Standard Deck Gray, wood deck in natural teak, black boot-topping, underwater hull Norfolk 65A Antifouling Red. You can get all these colors in our Colourcoats line of warship enamels: US01 #5 Standard Navy Gray US02 #20 Standard Deck Gray US03 1941 5-L Light Gray US04 5-D Dark Gray US14 Norfolk 65A Antifouling Red C01 Teak C02 Matte Black Best, John Snyder White Ensign Models http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/white.ensign.models/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: German submarine U-103 >> I have acquired an original amateur snapshot of W W 1 German submarine U-103, surfaced in an unidentified harbor (possibly Denmark). Thanks to SMML I have been able to find a little about this vessel. She was rammed and sunk by RMS OLYMPIC, sister ship of RMS TITANIC) in May of 1918. One source identifies U-103 as being of type "Mittel U". Sources differ about details of the incident, one says she had time to fire a torpedo (which missed), another says she was surprised on the surface and was unable to do anything. Nine or ten of the crew were lost. I again turn to SMML, and ask if someone can please tell me more about this class of submarine, and possibly supply a photo and/or a general line drawing thereof. << According to Gröner, Die deutschen Kriegsschiffe 1815-1945, U-103 was built by A.G. 'Weser', Bremen 1916-17. She had a surface displacement of 750 tonnes and submerged of 952 tonnes. She had four 50mm TT, two in the bow and two in the stern. Her overall length was 67.6m. Her speed was 16.5 kn on the surface and 8.8 kn submerged. Sorry, no drawings or photos in my references. Has anyone on this list seen, heard, or know anything about the two Russian pre Dreadnought battleships Borodino and Peresviet from a Russian plastic model company called Eastern Express? I saw an advertisement in a Russian armor magazine with the box art for these. That can mean that the kits are nearing, or are in production. Also in the ad was a profile drawing of the battleship Gangut. When you see this, that usually means that the kit is in the design stage. All three items were listed as being made in 1/350 scale. Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Andy Jones" Subject: Heller Strasbourg Hi All I watched today as a Heller kit of the French Battlecruiser Strasbourg ratcheted up to a frightening cost on E-bay. I must firstly confess that I had a go at bidding for it. However has anyone ever had a go at building one of these? If so what's it like as a kit? I really like the Strasbourg and the Dunkerque as ships and Heller produced the only large scale models of them. I would like to pick one of these up so if anyone has one they want to get rid of could they contact me off list please. I understand the rarity so I don't expect to get something for nothing. I bid a ridiculously large amount of money on E-bay and still lost--So I'm willing to pay!! Thoughts anyone??--on the ships/kits not my stupidity!!
