But since, at last for me, it sounded just too good to be true I will wait to see the actual kits before I will start celebrating. Regards D.P ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Mark Krumrey" Subject: SSP releases The FDR, and Pine Island were released in Revellograms last SSP Releases. It has been a few years, and I am sure they would sell in their "Picture Fleet" box art, as the Currituck, and the Coral Sea. However, some stuff that didn't make the cut were the original ESSEX, had neat box art, way out of proportion, and had the jack at the staff on the bow, but still neat box art. I too think their liners the SS Brasil or Argentina would be good subjects. The Guided missle cruiser Boston, Ramsey, and Knox would be good topics too. Mark Krumrey New Richmond WI ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Mike Bartel Subject: Heller Dunkerque/Strasbourg >> I watched today as a Heller kit of the French Battlecruiser Strasbourg ratcheted up to a frightening cost on E-bay. I must firstly confess that I had a go at bidding for it. However has anyone ever had a go at building one of these? If so what's it like as a kit? I really like the Strasbourg and the Dunkerque as ships and Heller produced the only large scale models of them. I would like to pick one of these up so if anyone has one they want to get rid of could they contact me off list please. I understand the rarity so I don't expect to get something for nothing. I bid a ridiculously large amount of money on E-bay and still lost--So I'm willing to pay!! Thoughts anyone??--on the ships/kits not my stupidity!! << The Heller Dunkerque/Strasbourg kits are very good, crisply mouded and, though tooled 30 years ago, have held up well over the years. There's a little flash here and there. They appear very accurate, and they aren't difficult to build. Both differ in superstructure details, like the prototypes. Don't worry about feeling silly bidding on eBay,and don't feel bad. Recently, an AeroMini Japan Air Lines DC-8-61 went for nearly $1600. (That's $US dollars, yes.) This diecast metal model is only about 10" long, and the paint was scratched a bit. So, bid all you want on the Heller kits, if you really want them! Of course as always I would really like to see some of the old Renwal kits, which I guess if the story is true, they no longer exist. I also remember a very detail, at least for that time, was a model of a DE, not the Revell Buckley, could have been another one of the Renwals. For those who have never seen a Renwal they were not accurate at all, sometimes pure fantasy, such as their missle cruiser and missle destroyer (or DLG?) but damn they were neat to build as a kid. Lots of good molded in detail on the bulkheads if I remember right. Anyone else remember any of their kits?? Ya, I know, I am trying to start a thread again - getting a little boring again :-) Michael Donegan NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: CapnAgee@aol.com Subject: Re: Fireboat Loren Perry took one of the Fireboats and RCed it with full fire house capability. He did an artical about it for Scale Ship Modeler. Watching it was great - typical of Loren's fantastic work! I have one and someday, I'm going to attempt to build it like his. Darn... come to think of it, that was 20 years ago! Ray Agee ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "John Clements" Subject: Heller Strasbourg Andy, I have a built up Dunkerque from some years back, and have just acquired a Strasbourg from Ebay UK - not the one you bid for, this was a couple of months ago, it was bundled with the Jean Bart and the kit had been opened so was quite cheap. Since acquiring it, I have discovered that some parts are missing, and there are no instructions - caveat emptor yet again! I think they are among the better of the Heller kits, and seem to be accurate from the references that I have. I will be using the L'Arsenal detailing PE set and WEM railings. Sadly no-one makes the Loire floatplane in 1/400 but it can be smartened up. They are impressive ships and worth spending some time on. There are good references available too. I have the Richelieu and Jean Bart in my queue as well, which look even better. Incidentally, I only buy from Ebay here; the prices bid for kits in the US seem ridiculous, with shipping costs on top. It may mean waiting a long time, but the smaller market seems to mean lower prices. Good luck with your search. If I can help in any other way, contact me off-line. John Clements ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Pieter Cornelissen Subject: Re: Revell/Monogram SSP Releases >> I am glad to hear R/M is planning another SSP program. I just hope this time they keep the Lockheed Super "G" Constellation out--It's been released at least 3 times in the past 7 years! I hope to start a new thread: What ship models would you most like to see re-released? Of course R/M will release mostly planes and some cars, but hopefully they include some ships as they did in the early 1990's. Personally I'd like to see the Monogram Ramsey and Halsey, and the Revell Ward/Campbelltown, Forrest Sherman, SS Brazil and the Burleigh/Hawaiian Fisherman. I thought I'd like to see their Fletcher until this past week a collection came in to a local hobby shop, which included a late 1980's release of this destroyer. I was excited and ready to take it until I took a good look at it. Glad I never bought one on Ebay. So I'd like to hear what others think. << I would like to see the Monogram Chicago again. Best modern subject ever by Monogram an a very interesting ship. And is would be nice if they kept the 'Battleship Chicago' label off this time. I've always enjoyed the info & support available from all the SMMLies. Also, I'm looking for the 1967-68 edition of "Boats of the United States Navy". Does anyone have one I can copy or purchase? Matt Prager ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "ian wrenford" Subject: 1:24 HMAS Voyager (Daring) model on ebay Check out the voyager model on ebay (www.ebay.com.au) - item number 2137226647. It's in 1:24th scale. Scratchbuilt. Weighs 160Kg. 5 metres long. I'm not sure if the price is what he intended to put in - but 1st bid is invited at AU$1.25m or 'buy it now' for AU$2.5million WOW!!!!! I'd also like to see the Oilers and transports as an interesting diversion. Note that I did find the Sherman and Ramsey on e-bay. I am building them as a gift for a friend who served on the Dupont and the R.L. Page. The old Monogram USN WWII 1/48 scale planes were a lot of fun as well. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: Figures for large scale ships Being an aircraft builder for the last 25 years, and only building 1/72 aircraft for the vast majority of that time, I have thousands of 1/72 figures that came with all sorts of kits...due to their size, they can be easily converted into naval figures... If someone needs them for a project, contact me off-list and I'll mail a handful.
