This flotilla was commanded by Kapitanleutnant von Rosenberg Grusycyznski. << I am not familiar with the Osprey book but it is possible that this response may not be correct. U-103 was not a coastal unit, although it may have been operating as such from time to time, but was designed to operate in the Atlantic and other more distant theaters while the boats designated UB or UC were much smaller and generally operated closer to shore. UC-103, however, was a coastal unit. She survived the war to be ceded to France in 1918. She was not taken into French service and was broken up in 1921. In WW 1 German submarines carried U, UB and UC designations and each had its own set of numbers. There were also a UD and UF series that were never completed. Confusion can arise as the numbers themselves were repeated so that you you had a series starting U-1 etc, UB-1 etc and UC-1 etc. I stand to be corrected. Michael London ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: U-505 Today's Los Angeles Times reported the discovery of the long missing navigation periscope of U-505. Workers dismantling some old buildings found an odd-looking tube in the former Arctic Submarine Laboratory at Point Loma, San Diego. It had been a functioning part of the research facility and still operates. Workers loaded the 1,000 pound device onto a truck on Thursday for a trip to the science museum in Chicago where it will be reunited with the rest of the sub. But I also think I recall it as the Currituck as a regular AV sister of the Pine Island. Can anyone confirm that?? << I have both the Norton Sound and the Pine Island. NS had a helicopter deck forward and a missile test platform aft. PI was the basic seaplane tender as was Currituck. William Swan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Re: Naval jacks To Donald Wooley In the words of ex-president Reagan, "Well, here we go again". Apparently the Navy doesn't have a clear definition of the term "active service" (I'm sure there must be some Navy people who have seen the SMML discussion on this matter, but none have responded, officially or otherwise, yet). But what really bothers me is the use of such phrases as "for the duration of the war on terrorism". Do our leaders think there will be a well-defined date of termination of hostilities, an armistice, a signing of articles of surrender, etc. that will be the end of "the duration", a specific day from which the terrorists will act no more? Don't our leaders realize this is a whole new ball game, which as yet has no rules? I have the instructions so it would by great to have the model to go with them. Can any one from Revel/Monogram comment on our requests. John Barnum Margate, England ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Subject: Revell SSP Re-Releases The old Revell Norton Sound was released in the mid-1950's when guided missles were at the leading edge of cold war technology and Revell was riding the wave. Every kid in the neighborhood had the missle armed Nautilus, a few the guided missle cruiser Boston but I was the only kid on my block with the Norton Sound sitting proudly in my bedroom. The real Norton Sound was a seaplane tender converted to an experimetal guided missle ship (AVM) just after WWII. Revell's version had a helo deck on the forecastle, quite a substantial gun battery, a Viking rocket and gantry on the fantail and a twin Terrier missle launcher. It was typical of Revell models of the period but one of the all time greats if you happen to be a 1950's Cold War Kid. The Norton Sound kit was converted by Revell into the seaplane tender Pine Island in a process that was the reverse of the ship's actual evolution. Unfortunately there will be no more Norton Sounds but perhaps the Pine Island will again see the light of day. Norton Sound kits do occaisonally show up on eBay but command premium prices. With some parts from spares box and minimal scracthbuilding you could probably build a pretty good replica of Revell's Norton Sound from the Pine Island. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: U-boat 20mm mounts Anyone have a decent drawing or photo of the German C/38 twin 20mm mount used on U-boats? Thanks, Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: Revell Schnellboote colours For Doug and anyone else dealing with the S-Boote colour scheme, I'm not sure that the following will be helpful in the States as it is based on the Humbrol range of enamels. If nothing else, it is a starting point. I have included the letter references used in the instructions for clarity. Ref Description Humbrol colour I used A Ochre (for wood parts) 110 Wood (72 KD topcoat) B Brown 98 Track Colour C Dust Grey 92 Iron grey D Brass E Stone Grey 64 Light Grey F Anthracite 33 and/or 85 Black G Overall colour 28 Camouflage Grey H Rusty Metal I Red J Green K White 34 White L Carmine M Yellow/Grey mix This is the colour for the life rafts. Don't know yet N Gunmetal 33 and graphite O Steel 92 Iron Grey & 56 P Brown Part of the torpedo conundrum Q Copper ditto R Aluminium & Copper mix ditto Although I have not actually used the WEM paints yet, I got the Kreigsmarine reference sheets from them and trust that theirs will be a good match for the main deck and hull colours. The torpedo conundrum: I'm not convinced by the colour scheme suggested in the kit. My references suggest that the body of the torpedo was stainless steel and the warhead dark grey. The torpedos appear to have been covered in grease and so I have (successfully) experimented with washes of yellow ochre and burnt umber thinned oil paints. This negates the need for the copper mixes suggested in the instructions. Hope that is helpful Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Robert Healy" Subject: Tirpitz Cammo and Heller Kits Greetings All, I am sure this has come up before... However, I have pulled the 1:350 Tamiya Tirpitz off the shelf along with the Toms Photo Etch for a few weeks of teeth grinding expletive spouting enjoyment...Soooo... what would the correct colors be for the final camo scheme she wore in the fijords. Any ideas on how to get those nice crisp lines on the superstructure? I was thinking of doing a bit of pre-assembly painting. Anyone done that before? And of course...who has them, preferably in acrylic. Also, as far as the Heller kits go, keep your eye on MODEL EXPO. Discount outfit in Florida. About once a year they do a 50% off on all the Hellers they have. It seems that at one time or another they have had them all. Jeff, I have a OLD Dunquerke...complete minus directions...sitting on the shelf. Picked it up a few years ago at a swap meet (Hey...waht's that...looks interesting...). It is open, but the bags are sealed. Also, they are REAL good at replacing lost/missing parts. I sent them a request a few years ago to see if they had some bits I was missing and they sent them at no charge (I was out the postage to the UK, but they were out the shipping to the US. Very impressive). Regards to All, Bob Healy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Revell Schnellboot >> The colors listed on the instruction sheet for the S-100 are given a number, but I couldn't find anything identifying who the manufacturer is....I checked the Revell AG website but didn't see any numbers for their line of paints. If anyone knows what these numbers signify, do you also have a comparison chart for other manufacturers' color offerings? << Doug, If you purchase my book on the Schnellboote, Warship Pictorial #15 and then purchase the corresponding colors listed from the White Ensign Models paint line, then you will have all your questions answered! There are many dealers carrying these items, such as Pacific Front Hobbies, Snyder & Short, White Ensign Models, Trident Hobbies, etc. Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: London Exhibition of Naval Modelmaking Hi All I am looking for accomplished modelmakers who might be interested in exhibiting and selling their models. A Royal Navy related venue is being sought in London and so modelmakers and naval artists in London and around the south-east of England would be ideal. There are, however, no restrictions. At present I am happy to consider anyone who would be interested in co-exhibiting or on the basis of selling items on commission. My own work is mainly WWII coastal forces based. If you think you might be interested, please get in touch with me off-list at d-taylor@dircon.co.uk I look forward to hearing from you.
