But what I am not getting is that in this day of lasers and computer technology, why is it not easier and cheaper to make the molds - the old molds where made under very labor intensive conditions - seems to me it should be easier and much cheaper now. Have I missed something or is it the companies that have?? I have been unable to find any so far and would be grateful for some help. Thanks. << Try the following web page. I know it is for trains but they carry brass strip. http://66.33.36.129/acatalog/shoppingindex.html Sincerely John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Re: I need help again Suart, I don't know where in the UK do you live but The Model Shop 190/194 Station Road in Harrow in London carries quite a wide range of brass strips, rods and tubes. Give them a call at: 020 8427 0387, even if they don't have exactly what you are looking for you could always ask who their supplayer is. Regards D.P ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Roland Mar Subject: Re: WW I & WW II U-Boats with the same numbers The reason there are the same numbers is that at the end of WW I, Germany was forbidden to have any submarines. The entire surviving U-Boat force of the imperial Hochseeflotte was either given to the Allies and/or scrapped. In 1936, in arguably one of the greater mistakes Britain [and indeed all of the allies] made in the run up to WW II, the Anglo-German naval treaty allowed Germany to slip out of the Versailles treaty restrictions on the size of their fleet and build up to 35% of the size of the Royal Navy including submarines. The Deutsches Kreigsmarine began the numbering system again from scratch. The first boats [Type IA] were based on the Turkish submarine GUR. The first series production boats [Type IIA] were based on the WW I UB II type with additional features from the Finnish VESSIKO, which was designed but not built in Germany post WW I. Incidentally, the numbering system started over yet again post WW II when the Federal German Navy [Bundesmarine] launched its first post war new construction submarine, the U-1 in 1961. Therefore, when researching German submarines you have to be sure of the era, and which navy [Imperial, Nazi, or Federal] you are looking at. Hope this helps, Roland Mar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Gernot Hassenpflug Subject: Armoured cruiser models Armoured cruisers, I guess I am not the only one pleased with the Russo-Japanese war subjects on the shelves these days, and Blucher is there too. But waht about RN armoured cruisers, from the 6 Cressy (1898), 4 Drake (1899), 6 County (1901), 6 Devonshire (1902), 2 Duke of Edinburgh (1903), 4 Warrior (1904) and 3 Minotaur (1905) classes, are there any ship kits in resin or otherwise? I understand there are kits of Invincible and Lion, when it comes to the later RN battle cruisers, has no-one made any of their forebears? Regards, Gernot ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: U-103 In my recent posting in Vol 1917 I gave a wrong figure for the size of the TT on this boat. Should have said 50cm and not 50 mm. 50cm = 19 11/16in. Michael London ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Melea/Mike Maynard" Subject: The Firefighter Hello All Stations After reading all the comments on the Revell Firefighter no one mentioned the fact that the "built up" photo of the model on the side of the kit box shows the engine order telegraph mounted on the smokestack! I wonder who gets to build the kits for Revell, perhaps they should ask one of our crack SMML builders to accomplish this task, I'm sure they would get a more accurate model in the process. It is a nice model, a number of model railroader folk have converted it to other uses(like a side wheel paddle steamer), I plan to turn my kit into a Buoy tender. "Red to red, green to green Never go in between" Mike M ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Sean Hert Subject: DD880 Dyess Q Hello All- I am helping a gentelman who served on the Dyess in WWII and after to build a model of her. He is certain that she was painted black from the waterline down, with no red oxide at any point. I have never seen this before- does this sound correct for a DD at that time period? Thx, Sean D. Hert ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Chisum" Subject: Re: I need help again! A company here called K&S makes brass strips and rods. If you can get a Walthers railroad catalog, it should have them and other scratchbuilding supply companies. Randy C ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: annobon4@aol.com Subject: Re: various Hi Guys A couple of items here. Concerning U-103. Micheal London remarks about U-103 are correct. There was a U-103, UB-103, and UC-103 in WWI. U-103 was built in 1916and was run over by the ocean liner Olympic in the western English channel on May,1918. UB-103 was coastal sub built in 1918 and scrapped post war in England. UB-103 had a double hull and could dive to a depth of 150 ft.UC-103 was a coastal mine layer. UC-103 was scrapped postwar. On the new Iowa class by Trumpeter and Skywave .I've seen only pics of the first 3 but it appears they seem to acknowlge the difference in electronics these carried particularly in the number of domes that were added. But on their website Skywave which also shows the Missouri kit it appears that the heliopad markings maybe the same. Because the Missouri is shown the same as the New Jersey. That is that the NJ was positioned on the left front side in 83 while the Big Mo which was brought back in 86 had it's in the front center of the heliopad. After comparing photos. About the Fire fighter I picked up this kit and at a club meeting some members told me that the Fire fighters hull isn't steel. It's Brass. That's why the hull is painted black. Thanks for the ship's story I didn't know anything about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Jim Kloek" Subject: ROCON 23 This is a last reminder that ROCON 23 is just a little over a week away.
