I fear the only remaing WWII period carrier(un-modified unlike the Lexington) is no more. Am I correct? Randy C. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "chisum1012" Subject: Re: the United States >>kinda of like building the best steam locomotive after diesel engines could already do the same job better, << Diesels can't do the job better, just cheaper. When the diesels first appeared they were pretty weak as far as pulling power. I have plenty of pictures of some steamers standing by to help the poor diesels up the grades, when one 4-8-4 could handle what four F-3's could do. What sold the diesels was the MUCH lower operating/maintenance costs. Diesels in general didn't totally replace steam until the mid fifties. The big delay was WWII and the limitations put on railroads during the war as far as R&D with diesels. But don't think for a minute that diesels are equal in pulling performance to steam..take a look at what one UP Challenger(steam) can pull compared to today's diesels. Subject: Re: Do you VHS or DVD? >> My question is, "How many of you on the SMML, world wide that is, have DVD players? Please post your answer to the SMML message board only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! << Dear Steve, I have an old 6-pac cartridge loading CD player, a 5 CD carousal, a single CD player, a single and a burner on the PC. I have 2 VHS players, 1 is a 2 slot duplicater. I have it on reliable authority that a CD has limited shelf life also. Smallshaw" Subject: Places of Interest in LA In LA the best item of interest is the SS Lane Victory in San Pedro (former home of the US Pacific Fleet). This ship is in excellent condition and a nice display. San Pedro is due south of Los Angeles on the 110 freeway (in the Port of LA). There is also a nice Maritime museum at this location. Once you have seen the Lane Victory you can go across terminal island and see the Queen Mary. Does Ed have a time travel machine? A time vortex into email limbo?? Or is he just plain psychic??? WHAT THEN!?! If you notice above, he posted the response to Steve's question before he gets the issue of SMML. Or did Shane pull a fast one to see if anybody noticed? Enquiring minds want to know. << Steve posted the same message to another site, (possibly multiple sites?) See the "post to SMML site caveat". Anyone could have responded from the other sites before the question was asked on this one. For the record, I have both DVD and VHS in different machines, using DVD more often as more media becomes available. Forget VHS! Art ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Keith Butterley" Subject: Even more fun in Vancouver Hi Ken, Malcolm forgot to mention our lovely WETher er weather, you'll love it. Imperial Hobbies in Richmond is a better choice ship wise than Burnaby Hobbies for kits, but Burnaby beats Imperial on books. And (insert self promoting plug) I beat them both on that count. The Brittania Shipyard which is right outside my back door (I live in a condo, can I have a back door?) is also interesting as per nautical stuff. It is a heritage site/museum. Another fascinating place which is only two blocks away from that, is fellow SMMLie Rob Brown's personal library. Now that is a site to behold. Rather than singling out Lotus, I should have said inclusively that these escorts by their efforts were the bright spot in an otherwise disastrous action. As I said before, the escorts did an excellent job protecting the convoy before the order was given first for the escorts to leave and then latter for the convoy to scatter. What is significant and note worthy to me about HMS Lotus and her commanding officer Lt Henry Hall is that nearly from the moment the escorts pulled away from the convoy and the SOS messages started being recieved, he started requesting to the AA Ship Pozarica and other escorts that they should go back and give assistance. Capt. Lawford of Pozarica disagreed but, eventually granted permision for Lotus to go back and pick up survivors and as you pointed out, she was not the only escort that went back and I should have given equall credit to those ships and thier respective gallant crews. I crossed the Atlantic on her in the 1950s. The main memory is being told the proud boast only wood was her butcher's chopping board and the piano. The other was one rough uncomfortable ride to England. She seemed to have a funny motion through the water. All that aluminum up top? The trip out was on a golden oldie, MV Britannic, the last of the White Star ships. Beautiful old thing & I know which I would rather see again. Just seemed to shove its way through the water. Admittedly slower but much more stable and comfortable. DVSs can be any region. Buy one in Singapore and they play DVDs from anywhere. Some shops in Oz will also change the factor settings to enable this function. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "stuart page" Subject: Re: dvd region code tips Hi, I've been reading about the problems that people are having with trying to play foriegn dvd's on their player and there is a simple solution. This is to search the internet on a search engine typing in the words 'dvd region codes hacks' followed by the make and model of your dvd player. Most players can be changed to multi region by a simple code that has to be typed in from the control whilst others have to be opened up and a jumper wire has to be cut inside. DON'T WORRY! It explains exactly what you need to do and should explain exactly what wire to cut. Its great when you can finally watch any dvd no matter the region. Good luck! Stuart Page GREAT Britain p.s. If anyone in authority asks where you learned to do this.........it wasn't me! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Mike Potter Subject: Helicopters of USS Chicago (CG-11) off Vietnam Here is more information about the helicopters of USS Chicago (CG-11) off Vietnam: The NAS Whidbey Island AIRRESCEN building's quarterdeck is adorned with the wooden bridge decking (open lattice) from the USS Chicago CG-11. It turns out that Chicago was in mothballed in Bremerton and they salvaged the decking before she was scrapped. The RESCEN has a picture of the ship and a plaque. It brought back a few memories as did the question about help ops. I looked at my CG-11 cruise book from Oct 1970-Mar 1971 and on that cruise we were a SAR platform for part of the cruise and were a PIRAZ station ship for part. While on SAR duty we had a helo det on board; helos were stored on fantail in a ready to fly configuration. The SAR helos were HH2-C's. We also landed ther larger single rotor helo's from HC squadrons. During this cruise we had over 500 helo landings. The CH-46's were our primary vertrep helos. So the USS Chicago did have an embarked helo det during this cruise, but the ship did not have a hanger for the SAR birds and they were only embarked while we were on SAR duty. When we were on PIRAZ station, we did not have embarked helos, but we had constant helo landings for personnel, parts and mail. Quiz: What did PIRAZ stand for? What were a PIRAZ station ship's duties? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Bob McDonald" Subject: Lindberg HMS Hood Just seen a Lindberg 400 scale HMS hood for $60 Australian. Anyone have any idea of the Quality and accuracy of said model. I've never heard of such, but there it was 15 feet at the the top of the shelf with no-one willing to get it down for me. TIA. However, I'm rather surprised that nobody has mentioned what may be the most practical method of preservation. Some would like to see her reactivated as a passenger ship, but I think that this is hopelessly impractical. While those magnificent engines could no doubt be refurbished and used, they are economic dinosaurs. They use lots of fuel, and are manpower intensive. There is almost no market for real "liners" anymore, the money is in the cruise business, and in that market, the SS United States' impressive speed is irrelevant. Others suggest making her a museum. This too is somewhat impractical. The "hotel" section of the ship has been gutted, and it would take a huge amount of money to "restore" her. Museums don't bring in enough money to make the interior restoration possible. Perhaps the most practical solution would be to maker her a hotel/museum, sort of along the lines of the Queen Mary. It would not be necessary to pay for fuel or engine crews. Paying guests would make it possible to finance new interiors for the "hotel section". When last I checked the SSUS Foundation web site, this was the option they were looking at. I still think this is her best hope. "There seems to be something wrong|David R.
