Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Mike Potter Subject: Re: Helicopters of USS Chicago (CG-11) off Vietnam Here is more information about the helicopters of USS Chicago (CG-11) off Vietnam. CLARIFICATION: This is from a friend. I have inserted quotes here to clarify that I am not the original source: >> The NAS Whidbey Island AIRRESCEN building's quarterdeck is adorned with the wooden bridge decking (open lattice) from the USS Chicago CG-11. It turns out that Chicago was in mothballed in Bremerton and they salvaged the decking before she was scrapped. The RESCEN has a picture of the ship and a plaque. It brought back a few memories as did the question about help ops. I looked at my CG-11 cruise book from Oct 1970-Mar 1971 and on that cruise we were a SAR platform for part of the cruise and were a PIRAZ station ship for part. While on SAR duty we had a helo det on board; helos were stored on fantail in a ready to fly configuration. The SAR helos were HH2-C's. We also landed ther larger single rotor helo's from HC squadrons. During this cruise we had over 500 helo landings. The CH-46's were our primary vertrep helos. So the USS Chicago did have an embarked helo det during this cruise, but the ship did not have a hanger for the SAR birds and they were only embarked while we were on SAR duty. When we were on PIRAZ station, we did not have embarked helos, but we had constant helo landings for personnel, parts and mail. << ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: CapnAgee@aol.com Subject: Re: saving ships Randy, USS Cabot is gone! She was towed to the salvage place in Texas almost two years ago and cut to pieces. We observed it on the net, section by section. The last of a class that was maintained by Spain until given to a group in America. She languished at her berth in New Orleans due to mismanagement and she now no longer exists. A Miami, Fla., group had beautiful plans for her, but ...! There are people like Bill Gates who have money they don't know what to do with and they are the people we should go after. Imagine a National treasure for us and tax deductions for them -- a win - win for everyone. Ray Agee aka CapnAgee@aol.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Bruce Ross" Subject: Re: PIRAZ Mike Potter asked the quiz question: >>> What did PIRAZ stand for? What were a PIRAZ station ship's duties? << Answer: Positive Identification and Radar Advisory Zone - duties, pretty much just what the name implies. I do know that I sure spent a lot of time there. Bruce ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: annobon4@aol.com Subject: Trumpeter 1/350 Hornet Hi Guys Today by accident while I was looking for a book at the AAA hobby shop in Magnolia NJ. They had recieved test shots of upcoming releases from Trumpeter. A test shot of the new USS HORNET CV-8 in 1/350 scale was there. A test shot isn't a whole kit but it had the hull. It was one piece that can be made into waterline or full hull. The hangar deck had inscribed lines for deck plating and the elevators. The hangar deck is in four sections as well is the flight deck. Going the full lenght of the hull. There was no catapaults on the flight deck. The planking of the flight deck is inscribed. For a airgroup you will get 18 B-25 Mitchells. They also plan to release as separate sets: F4F Wildcats, TBD Devastators, and SBD Daultless. As to how many planes per set you get and how much do they cost.I don't know. I have built models for over 35 years, and have built several of their kits. If this model is like the other Lindburg kits I have known, it would be best to just leave it up on the top shelve. At least it is doing something useful, collecting the dust bunnies. Most of you know me as The Token Yank at WEM, or half of Snyder & Short, or both. However, my training and trade are in the field of historic preservation. With that in mind, let me tell you that just about the last thing that anyone should do to a ship is to landlock it in earth fill. As soon as you've done that, you've doomed the ship to ultimate destruction. Encase the ship in fill and you can no longer maintain that part of it that is immersed in the earth. Shoreside, that earth's going to be full of marine salts. That underwater paint on the exterior of the hull isn't going to last forever, and when it begins to fail and the hull begins to rust through, all the paint that you can slap down on the inside of the bilges will not restore a whit of structural integrity. Eventually, that lower part of the ship will rust through, you'll lose structural integrity, and the sheer weight of the superstructure will begin to collapse the hull. Your museum has now just been closed for reasons of public safety, and the only thing you can do is see how much scrap value there is in that collapsing hunk of metal. In order to properly maintain a ship--even an immobile museum ship--you need to be able to drydock her from time to time to perform needed maintenance. It just goes with the territory. There are lots of well-intentioned but misguided efforts at preservation. In my quarter century in the business, I've seen LOTS of them. One that will haunt the YORKTOWN in years to come was the replacement of her flight deck surface with concrete a few years back. Concrete, no matter how well it's mixed and laid, will develop micro-cracks. It WILL allow water penetration. And when that water finds its way beneath the concrete flight deck, it WILL begin to eat the substructure. Get the picture? The concrete probably seemed like a quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive fix. Over the long haul, it will prove only to have been quick and easy. Best, John Snyder, Principal P.S. The photos of her seem to show a dark hull/light upperworks paint scheme, but I don't know what the colors were. Anyone know if the colors would be 507A & 507C or MS3 & MS4A? Camouflage Volume One: Royal Navy 1939-41 doesn't specify the colors. In Model Shipwright No. 25, an article by Peter Hodges shows the Zulu and Sikh in dark hull/light upperworks schemes and says the colors were MS3 and MS4A. Any help would be appreciated!
