Regards JPH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Roger/Sharon Torgeson" Subject: Re: Trumpeter 1/350 Hornet Craig, I saw to day a pre order form Squadron/MMD in my local hobby shop for the Hornet and along with a listing of the extra aircraft sets that will be available. Each set will have 10 aircraft and cost I believe was $12.95. Aircraft were B-25, F4F, Devastators and SBD. I don't remember seeing anything being mentioned about PE for them Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "John Sutherland" Subject: Re: HMS Lance Camouflage Hi Art, Lance was a Mediterranean / Force H boat - I believe she was in 507B/507C with 507A decks. This was a common pattern for Force H around 1942 when she was sunk. The HP kit is a nice model - especially with WEM PE and extras. John Sutherland Whitby, Porirua New Zealand ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Mark W. McKellar" Subject: Re: Preserving old ships >> Encase the ship in fill and you can no longer maintain that part of it that is immersed in the earth. Shoreside, that earth's going to be full of marine salts. That underwater paint on the exterior of the hull isn't going to last forever, and when it begins to fail and the hull begins to rust through, all the paint that you can slap down on the inside of the bilges will not restore a whit of structural integrity. Eventually, that lower part of the ship will rust through, you'll lose structural integrity, and the sheer weight of the superstructure will begin to collapse the hull. Your museum has now just been closed for reasons of public safety, and the only thing you can do is see how much scrap value there is in that collapsing hunk of metal. << This solution reminds me of the way I saw Charles W. Morgan when I was a child. She was brought into shore, and fill was dropped around her making her land-locked. Remember this is a wooden hulled whaler. The next time I saw her, the museum was spending a fortune to restore her planking etc, below the grade so they could refloat her. Now she's afloat again - as a ship ought to be. Nice idea, but gosh it's expensive in the long run. Mark Boston ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Bruce Burden Subject: Re: OT: Cheverolet d.u.k.w. Hello Dirk, >> I try to find it in the web. We're living in germany, so its a little bit difficult for us to visit the trucks... << Is there something specific you are looking for regarding the DUKW? I can probably get digital photos and post them to a modelling website that I maintain. If you want to see the real thing, your best bet, being in Germany, is probably the Trucks 'n Tracks Show held in England. I do not know if the Trucks 'n Tracks organisers know for certain what will show up in advance, you can always contact them. There is (was) a DUKW in England that a gent was using to putter around in the canals. I suspect military vehicle collector groups can put you in touch with him. I don't know what the interior of the DUKW in Austin looks like, as it is close to 3m high - making it a challenge to peek over! - but something can be arranged, I expect, to get some photos. Bruce ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Re: Ray Agee/ USS Cabot Ray, I know that you have used Bil Gates just as an example but while he certainly isn't one of my favourite personalities, this time I have to protest on his behalf. He indeed accumulated a wast fortune but he have donated quite large sum of money to the program of polio vaccination in Africa as well as to many other charitable funds which try to help some of the poorest people on this planet. Cabot or polio or clean water to drink..... no contest IMO!!!! Regards D.P ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Michael Kear" Subject: United States I did a google search and found a site at http://www.ss-united-states.com/ that has some wonderful pictures of the ship at her prime, but sadly has some pictures of her now that speak volumes. The interior has been gutted, all the fine fittings removed. The ballrooms and dining rooms are just steel caverns. To make that ship into something worth charging people money to see is clearly going to require volumes of money that would make Donald Trump think twice. If you're in any doubt about the scale of the job to restore the SS United States, have a look at the site and you'll understand what's involved. And remember this is a site dedicated to getting a restoration project underway. So its going to sugar-coat some aspects of the job. It's not up to me to say whether the ship to be restored or not, but no one should be under any illusions about how enormous the task is.
