That definitely made for a better wash than thinning with water. The problem was that I didn't have a thin grey solution-- I ended up with a very thin grey solution with little flakes of paint pigment floating in it. It left a very uneven effect. I just tried plan B. I used paint thinner to thin some testor's oil-based enamel to a thin wash. I again had the problem of little bits of pigment suspended in a solution, leaving spots all over. There is a very well stocked artist supply store about a mile form my house. Tomorrow I'll head over there and buy some artist's oils. (I assume I want the ones that come in a tube, right?) I have two questions now: 1. How finely ground are the pigments in artist's oils? Are the pigments in these tubes ground finer than hobby paints? 2. Are turpentine and paint thinner interchangeable when thinning these oil paints? (I have a quart of paint thinner already, do I also need to buy turpentine?) Thanks to all for their support and suggestions.... Bill P.S. This is the first time I've tried to use a wash like this to highlight engraved plank detail. In the past, I've only dealt with kits that had raised plank detail, which I have experience dealing with. If not, maybe its one for them to think about. << Yes, there were lovely kits in 1/700 done by Imperial Hobby Productions...but don't believe they are currently in production (though someone should correct me if I am in error ). Nat Richards ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Henry T. Chen" Subject: Model shops in Nagoya, Japan Hi there, Can any of you Japanese SMMLies give me some suggestions, if there are nice hobby shops worth visiting in Nagoya? I'll be there for a couple of days! I'm hoping to pick up the new Ise/Mogami, possibly the Izumo, ect.... Thanks, Henry (Los Angeles) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "James Baumann" Subject: The final mitigation... Have just picked up todays posting from Darius. I thank you very much for the kind offer of information on pre-dreadnoughts. I most certainly will be posting requests for help on these and other subjects. Until 6 months ago I had never operated a computer and thought of them as being in league with the devil!!!! (corrupting the youth of today etc harangue harangue!!!) Having joined the SMML and learnt the instant access to so much knowledge and information that is possible thru this fellowship I now realise that there is so much information out there that I simply did not realise existed; I hope that now I will have better access and help in more obscure subject matters. I must however as the final mitigation/excuse(?) re; this old chestnut of steam launches on the Chin Yuen add the cause of my erroneous placement thereof....!! on page 395 of Conways all the worlds fighting ships 1860-1905 there is a nice little line drawing of Ting Yuen as completed 1884 which shows the boats midships on the rack to have funnels...... In future (now that I have sooooo many knowledgable fellow modellers and ship lover friends out there) I shall clog up the ether the moment I draw a blank! Future models of mine that enter the web perhaps should be annotated BCA - before Computer assistance!! Thanking you all in anticipation of future help JIM BAUMANN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Gernot Hassenpflug Subject: Seals Models Izumo comments Pieter Cornelissen wrote in SMML 1946 (6. Seals Models Izumo): >> could you please be so kind as to comment on the quality of this kit and the effort needed to get to this detail level before I order one? << Certainly, if it helps others who would like to build this kit. By the way, the http link I posted is now working, sorry about that error. I submitted an article on Izumo to Navismagazine, so you can read it when the new issue appears near the end of this month or so. My comments to you as a pre-dreadnought builder, coming from me who has no such experience except this model, what can I say? 1. It is fun to build, which is definitely a plus considering the steep price tag (3800yen less 20% at various stores). 2. It is different, and therefore will remain of interest when on display longer than say, a boring battleship (like, say, an Iowa, grin). 3. The references are sparse, which should whet any REAL(TM) modeler's appetite 4. Long service life (45 years) with variations in appearance, also some classic colour schemes, and there is a sister ship (Iwate). Basically you have a lot of options to choose from. 5. Lots of detail can be added. Particularly boat deck and davits, masts, and rigging. Lots of scope for deck painting experts. And if you hate fitting photo-etch railings, this model is easy (and you can do a great deal with the trick of canvas-covered railings!). 6. Moldings of large parts excellent, deck is impressive as are hull details. Superstructure is, well, not much there really. Smaller parts are progressively thicker and out of scale, the common injection-molding problem. Still, brass rod of various diameters will help with masts, gun barrels (below secondary), and yards/booms. 7. Rigging is something I am not good at, and have not tried to any extent - this is the furthest I have gone ever, and looking at what modelers I admire put on in terms of rigging I can only ask myself if it is even possible for a clumsy oaf like me. Suffice it to say you can probably get away with little (like me) or be egrerious.... 8. Funnel caps could be replaced with wire after hollowing out the insides of the trunks. So in short, I think you will not be disappointed by this kit. Putty and sanding are necessary only for hull/deck mating, and a couple of smaller parts. Thinning decks is probably also a good idea. Cheers, Gernot ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Yamato wreck video >> Yes there is a video of what was broadcast on Japanese TV, but it was in Japanese (no subtitles)...so I just enjoyed the film and hummed quietly to myself. << Nat, Would you care to enlighten us all as to where we might obtain such a video? Thanks, Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: seals Izumo >> WHooooooaaaa!
