I have worked with computers for 33 years, and for them for 10. Computers have never forgiven use for taking away punch cards (you don't know how those chads can gum up the works...well, you folks in Florida do.) Seldom mentioned on schematics is the heart of any computer: the "Malevolence" chip. On Future: A "friend" on another list suggested using old "Windex" sprayers to apply Future. A disaster! The model was covered in bubbles and runs. Pricked the bubbles and soaked up the excess with a paper towel. Dried smooth and glossy in an hour. The stuff's a charm. For those having problems: perhaps you are working with the Future while too close to your computer? (See above.) On Washes: I went the oil paint route and wasn't happy with the results. I used "Turpenold" instead of turpentine. Do I need more practice, or should I switch to turpentine or mineral spirits? (Come to think of it, I have some mineral spirits somewhere--I'll try again.) On SMMLies: I cannot begin to tell everyone how much I enjoy our little discussions. Thank you to all! Edd (Who is thinking about writing a sea chantey to go with "Taking time to SMML the Flowers") ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: PaulShip37@aol.com Subject: Apollo 12 third stage reappears in Earth orbit I just caught up on the e-mail for the last week and saw the messages about the Apollo 12 third stage reappearing in Earth orbit. As someone pointed out, there is only about 1 percent chance of it striking us. Not to worry; if I recall, the third stage of a Saturn V is the same structure they made Skylab from. When Skylab re-entered, just a little bit of it landed in.....wait a minute... some of you guys live in Australia, don't you????? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: Washes... Good Morning (allowing for timezone differences), There will probably be two grades of oil paint in the art shop. In the UK they are sold as student and artist's grade, but who knows what they do in the colonies? Recommend you use the artist's grade as the pigment is much finer. As to what you thin it with, turpentine is probably excessive. I use 'White Spirit', probably the equivalent of mineral spirits. Very cheap over here and useful for many household tasks. Best wishes, Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Adrian Webster" Subject: RAN ship plan CD Hello All, can anyone (particularly in Australia) help me with a copy of the CD/s? of ship plans/detail drawings that WERE available on the RAN website (www.navy.gov.au) under "modellers plans"? Apparently they're still not making these free CDs available and knowing the bean counters in Canberra, they may never do so again (I think they were frightened by the sheer volume of requests!). Of course I'll gladly cover blankCD/creation/postage costs. Thanks in advance, Adrian Webster Bendigo, Vic ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "John Rule" Subject: Chen Yuan (Chin'En) Re: recent postings on this subject. Jim Baumann refers to Conways showing steam launches on the boat deck of said ship. I believe these actually represent torpedo boats, two of which were carried in the ship's original configuration. These torpedo boats were 19.7m in length and were built of steel and were named Chen Yuan First and Chen Yuan Second. A good reference for the ship and her sister is Warship #29 in which there is an article by Andzrej Mach with photos, drawings, technical and historical data. Sincerely, John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: Resin ships by Dell A friend recently mentioned a French resin ship manufacturer named Dell. I assume no relation to the computer maker and I wonder if anyone else on the list knows of this company? And where to find them? I will be heading for Europe in two weeks including Cherbourg, Bayeux, Saumur, Lyon and the Normandy beaches. Thanks, Michael Zimmerman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: Thanks I would like to thank everyone that helped with my Vyborg color questions and my need for Gromoboi instructions. Michael Zimmerman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Michael D'Silva" Subject: Re: proposed battleships - Tiger 1912 Hi Ted, >> 1912 Tiger I'm especially surprised by the lack of coverage of the last ship. We all admire the Hood, and there have been enough kits to cover that subject for some time. How about Tiger, the largest warship in the world in her time, and certainly one of the most beautiful. I don't have the skills to build her from scratch in styrene and brass, although I've done a 1:450 in balsa wood. I have had hints the subject may be covered by a resin company in 1:350 (MY dream anyway). << And mine too! At least it's part of my dream to collect each class of dreadnought in the Grand Fleet. If HMS Tiger ever became available in 1/350, I would have no hesitation (funds permitting) to purchase a kit. Generally speaking, RN dreadnought fans are not well served in either 1:350 or 1:700 scale. It isn't looking too bad though with the Steel Navy 1:350 HMS Dreadnought and (soon to be released?) 1:350 HMS Hood from ICM. It would be delightful if a 1:350 HMS Tiger was available in resin. Sure she'll be expensive, but if it's an accurate kit, it'll prove popular among us dreadnought aficionados. Haven't heard too much about the ISW 1:350 HMS Invincible. It was supposed to be available by now, I think? Anyway, we'll wait and hope. But yes, I'll second a 1:350 HMS Tiger 1912 in resin... Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Nathan Pettigrew" Subject: Info and photos for the Albatros class patrol boat Hello all, I've building Revell-Germany's 1/144 Albatros class schnelleboot and I'm having a difficult time finding any references. The only pics on the Internet I've been able to find are some scans of wrinkled magazine photos (which show up on several sites). I was hoping to find some on the Germany navy website, but didn't find any (but I might be missing them as I don't read German). Mostly what I'm after is accurate painting info. There are two different sets of buildup pics on Steelnavy.com and Modelwarship.com that show all black below the waterline. However, the instructions call for a black bootline and red below. If anyone has any pointers to websites or books, I would be grateful. Thanks, Nathan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: MDDoremus@aol.com Subject: Future & Solvaset I had a similar problem with Solvaset turning the Future a milky white. I had great success brushing more Future over the white and making it disappear. Still, any interest out there for- -1920 South Dakota -1920 Lexington << Both these subjects are coming from IHP in 1:700 scale within the next eight months. They will be complete kits, NOT craftsman kits. The South Dakota is almost completely remastered and will be released as a special edition for 2003, the 10th anniversary of its first release. The Lexington is an entirely new tool. Both kits will feature detailed and accurate resin hulls, superstructure, metal detail parts, photoetched cage masts, and turned brass main gun barrels. You can reserve now with your dealer (preferred) or direct.
