Minor correction: The Ohio will be SSGN 726, not SSGN 762 as the article reports. That hull number is assigned to a late model Los Angeles class submarine. Also, I am just completing two versions of the USS Halibut (SSGN 587). These will be featured at the 2002 USS Halibut Veteran's Reunion next week in San Diego, and raffled off to help fund the next reunion. I built the resin Combat Subs early version with a "red bird" Regulus missile basically out of box. The later version was a conversion of the Combat Subs kit to the Special Operations version (See "Blind Man's Bluff" for details). This has an extended (raised) sail, deployement tube for the "fish" (the remotely operated camera bearing deep submersibles) and the "DSRV" simulator near the stern, which was actually a special chamber for saturation diving down to 600 feet. I will submit photos shortly for posting on the Steel Navy Photo Gallery. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Erhardtsen" Subject: Virus I to have got this false mails from SMML and others with an attachment. Luckily I have not opened any of the attachment yet. My old version of Outlook Express can´t even open most of this mails. It goes down as soon I mark the mail, meaning that I have problems erasing it. The solution I have found is, to mark the mail together with the normal mail before and after the sick mail, and erase all 3 (mark one - keep shift down and mark the last - all in between will be marked). Then I go into the folder with erased mails and move the real mails back. (last mail last, as my Outlook close down when the virus mail are automatically marked.). To empty the folder with erased mails, I might have to send myself a mail, so that last mail in the folder is not closing outlook down when I open the folder. EE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Pieter Cornelissen Subject: Re: harvesting virusses Hi, a classic way of detecting infection by a 'harvesting' virus like W32/Bugbear is to put an non-existing emailadress at the top of your adress book. This will lead to a 'non-deliverable' response of your emailprovider after infection. Cheers, Pieter Cornelissen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: John Kutina Subject: Threads - Panama Canal http://www.lucianne.com/threads2.asp?artnum=245789 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Ives100 Subject: Re: Viruses Adding to Shane's cautions- we also had a virus going around on the SubCommittee BB a while back. If you are going to send an attachment to another member, please state clearly in the message body the specific subject. Some of the viruses have generic messages to make the attachment look legitimate. Also, Shane's advice on antivirus programs is right on the mark. I have a very good one, and make a habit to check every two weeks for update downloads. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "graham and melanie" Subject: Help Pre dreadnought Hi All, its graham from ipms cruiser sig. I wondered if you could help i am building IJN Takasago 1890`s would the ships colour be white and what colour for the band around her hull. hope you can help. all the best graham ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: WYNBERG Subject: Ballast Help please, whats the best stuff to use to ballast a plastic hulled model and still allow for installation of r/c. I thought of plasticene but does it dry out after a year or so? Thanks in advance Paul Harley ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Craig Palmer" Subject: info needed hi, Does anyone have info of the M/V Nordik Express. It operates in Canada in the St Lawrence..LOA, beam etc Maybe even photo's. Thanks Craig DFW ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: pylons @ Pearl Harbour Hey all If I get time to complete this for the end of year comp, I am thinking of doing (yes another thinking, planning project, but in the middle of builders block right now). But im thinking o doing the revell USS Arizona, now instead of doing her sailing at speed in the water or something, I was thinking of doing her tied up to the piers/pylons @ Pearl next to Ford island...now those pylons were white, but where they solid blocks down to the bottom or were they mounted like on masts/poles or something?? also they had numbers on them right?? Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: The dangers of the old references I am reading right now throu a multi part artices "Battleships of RIN" by Edward C. Fisher Jr. (WI editor at the time) published in Warship International in 1960s and "Cruisers of IRN" by Christopher C. Wright published also in WI in 1970s. While it is not my aim to deride the work of the said authors and while I understand the difficulties that they have been working under I have to say that both articles are a good examples of how cautiously works of that period need to be treated in the light of new research and newly gained informations. Since trying to review every single ship covered by both authors would take a multi part article of its own I have chosen just a few samples from every article to show the dangers waiting for the unwary. E.C. Fisher Jr. "Battleships of RIN": "Gangut" page 185: "...This is the GANGUT, a little battleship build primarily for coastal operations, whom some felt was a small version of ALEKSANDER II type. She was laid down at the New Admiralty Yards, St.Petersburg 1889. Launched on 6 Oct.1890 and completed in 1892, her technical characteristics are as follows: Nomenclarure: (snip) Displacement: 6,592 Material: steel Dimensions: 278' x 62' x 21' (85.0m x 18.9m x 6.4m -D.P.) Complement: 413-498 officers and men Armament: 1-12" (.30cal); 4-9", 4-6", 10-14 QF; 5 TT (some say no TT?) Protection: Type; Compound; partial B. 16" amidship tapering off; 8" MT; 2,5" CT Machinery: 2 sets ver. 3 exp. with 6.000 IHP = 14.7 kts. Boilers: 8 Screws: 2 ....." Now let's look at the entry about "Gangut" in Russian "Encyclopaedia of Ships of Russian Imperial Fleet" A.I. Taras et all, Harvest 2000: "Gangut" page 24: Typ: B.F. (Armored Frigate), laid down at SPB/New Admiralty Yards in 1889, launched 1890 and completed 1894. Displacement: 7500 tonn Dimensions: 88,3m x 18.9m x 7.1m Complement: 28 officers, 493 men Armament: 1-12", 4-9", 4-6", 6-47mm, 13-37mm, 2x381mm TT Protection: sides 406-305mm (16"-12" D.P.), deck -63mm (2.5"), turret(MT) -229mm (9"), CT -152mm (6") Machinery: 2 sets 5280 hp, two screws. The Wright's article about RIN cruisers is even more confusing. Instead of choosing data from the most reliable (in authors opinion) source, he quotes 3 or 4 sources and leaves it to the reader to take a pick. For example in his description of armoured cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov" (WI no.1/1977 page 57) dimensions are given as follows: "...Dimensions: Moiseev: 101.5/103.3m x 18.4m x 8.1/8.4m. M.Sb.12/93: 321.0' bp x 61.0' lwl. ONI-IFA '85: 333' x 61' x 25' 9" aft..." A question springs to mind: so what the heck were the dimensions of "Admiral Nakhimov"???? Answer, just for the record: 103.3m oa, 101.5m wl, 97.84m bp x18,6m x 7.69m (average). When we look at the "Armament" section of the artice in the 3rd paragraph "...As refitted 1899-1900..." we have a choice of FIVE sources describing all sorts of weird and wonderfull combinations of 6 and 8inch guns (some of them housed in new turrets with 6" armour). Fact is that despite plans to replace cruiser's old 8 and 6inch guns during the 1899/1900 refit no such replacement was ever carried out * and "Admiral Nakhimov" fought at Tsuschima with her old complement of 8 x 8 inch and 10 x 6inch guns. Regards D.P * as Arbuzov nicely puts it in his "Armoured cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov"" (Warships of the World series): "...At that time no funds, will or time could have been found for the proposed replacement..." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: tkremer Subject: Re: virii messages Shane writes: >> Just a quick message to warn people to be careful opening emails which may look like they're coming from SMML & from many people within the ship modelling community (names withheld so as not to taint them with false accusations) with titles that look relavant to ship modelling. These emails look like the real thing and usually come with an attachment. Hell, I've recieved approx 20 in the past 6 hours It appears that these virus designers are getting smarter & smarter. If in doubt of the origin doublecheck the email address - I have had people get emails from among others shipmodels@mira.net, shipmodels@onetel.net.uk & shipmodels@aol.com NOT shipmodels@tac.com.au with SMML content from past issues in it. If in doubt don't open it & get back to the person who you THINK sent it. Check the full headers of any suspect emails and you may be able to find out who actually sent it. << The "from" field in these emails is falsified using addresses stolen from the MS Outlook address book but by looking at the full headers you can identify the originating internet service provider and IP address. Only the ISP could link an IP address with a specific user. Over the last day I've gotten SMML & shipmodel related virii that originated at the following ISPs... telstra (Australia) nextra (Sweden) sarvers (Pennsylvania) Also one that originated at a Pac Bell/SBIS address. Anyone here using those ISPs please check your virus software! Best regards, Tom Kremer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: Ship's Wheel Thanks to all for the info on the "water out of beads" question. Now for another: on the USS Juneau (CL 52), what type of ship's wheel would have been at the secondary control station, just aft of the after stack? Would it be spoked, or a solid circle of wood, steel, etc? I need to make one, and I'm wondering if I can get away with just punching out a circle of brass or really thing plastic. Thanks again, Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Brent Theobald Subject: Online Ship Contest from Roll Models Howdy! Brent ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Randy Short Subject: NewBooks and paint chips Snyder and Short will be selling the new Classic Warship books on Prinz Eugen and Myoko Class. Price is $13 each. For those who want to save a few busks on shipping, you can request book rate. At book rate, you get 0ne or both for $2 shipping. Takes a few more days than first class. Ironically sometimes book rate gets there faster than Priority Mail. In about 2 weeks, mid Oct, the books will be in. Also about then, we will be releasing the third Royal Navy WW2 color chip set. It will retail for $21, have 20 colors, including some paint locker colors from actual ships. We also carry the White Ensign Colourcoat paints, and all the Classic Warship books and WR Press books. I have some of the Polish books that I will sell at cost. If you are interested, send a SASE and I will mail you a list of what we have. I can also get the new releases periodically and can give a good price on them. Many thanks to our customers, because without you there would be no more color chips released, as this business funds the effort.
