Sorry about that. I shall answer in the vane that, i do not know, which parts of the 1/72 S 100 fret can be used on the Airfix 1/72 S10 kit. These are two kits of two different versions of S Boat made by two different manufactures many years apart. The PE set was designed especially for the Revell S-100 kit with no thought of being able to fit any of it to the Airfix kit. "BUT" if Airfix got their dimensions reasonably correct when they made their kit there is no reason why, for example, the railings should not fit in place. As for any of the other parts all i can suggest is that you use modellers license, and if it fits use it. Sorry I can't be more of a help on this one. Constitution ("Old Ironsides") Please forgive the delay, but my PC caught the sniffles from the virus that hit SMML. I had started a thread about the number of masts on the U.S.S. CONSTITUTION, and had gotten several interesting responses. The thread was a result of my previous realization that there were FOUR masts, not three as is so commonly thought. The fourth mast is called the mizzen trysail (or spanker sail) mast tucked in quite close to the mizzen mast. It is dedicated to the boom, gaff, and rings of the trysail only. Its base is stepped in the usual manner and its top is secured to the mizzen just below the lowest doubling. There are no shrouds. Everyone I asked locally answered "3" and all were surprised to hear (and count) "4". But then the plot thickened as I received some interesting replies from SMML, causing me to check into the specifications in greater depth. I discovered that "mast" can be defined as either a single collection of short sections for carrying the sails and rigging etc. (fore mast, main mast, mizzen mast, etc.), or the individual sections thereof. Therefore, using the most common and popular definition, CONSTITUTION does indeed have four masts. But I came across several paintings and drawings of CONSTITUTION made over the years, and apparently the number of principal sails per mast seems to have varied from three to five. The most prevalent number is four. These sails lend their names to the individual sections that constitute a mast, therefore each mast is composed of four submasts. My reference lists these individually as Fore mast Main mast Mizzen mast Fore top mast Main top mast Mizzen top mast Fore topgallant mast Main topgallant mast Mizzen topgallant mast Fore royal mast Main royal mast Mizzen royal mast and, of course, the mizzen trysail mast. Thus, by the general definition of "mast" there four masts, but by more detailed definition there are thirteen. As Fritz Koopman noted, the three uppermost masts are "sent down" in winter, ever since a heavy, wet snowstorm caused one to fall to the spar deck. However, I am not sure if it is just the royals or are the topgallants (t'gallants) sent down as well. I will check this winter as I live just south of Boston. I do not claim this to be the "definitive" answer, I merely present the information as I found it in various books. Next question: How many sails were aloft when CONSTITUTION was "under full sail"? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: Re: WEM S-100 Fret Dear John I happen to have Airfix kit, the Revell kit and the WEM kit on the desk in front of me. The short answer is that the Airfix kit is not up to the standard of the WEM offering. The long answer is that there are a number of parts from the WEM kit that can be used on the Airfix one, but you may have to do a lot of work to make it worthwhile. The detail on the Airfix kit is decidedly bulky. Although I had reservations about the accuracy, since comparing it with the (small) plans in the Steve Wiper book, maybe it is not so bad. My advice would be to use the WEM parts on the Revell kit, see what is left over and think about using them on the Airfix kit. Vague breakdown on no specific order: Most of the WEM frets are taken up with the replacement hand rails. These are the correct pattern for the longer boats and so are not suitable for the S-7 to S14. The details for the forward 2cm are not applicable to the early boats. The rear 2cm can be embellished with a couple of the details from the WEM kit. You can adapt the sight from the twin 2cm part. I have cut up one the spare magazines to provided in the WEM kit to give this mount both a loaded cartridge and to create the magazine rack on the pedestal. There are a couple of details for improving the wheelhouse interior that can be used. The radio set would, perhaps, be arguably more useful in the Airfix kit as you can see a lot more inside the wheelhouse. The details for the torpedo rails is wrong on the Airfix kit, or at least incompatible with the correct pattern on the Revell kit and so cannot be used. The rest is mainly detail dressing; stopcock and the like and so can be used as you think necessary. My own projects with these kits have, so far, have produced one S-100 type 'straight from the box', another S100 well underway heavily embellished from the WEM kit and generally detailed, plus I have just finished an S-38 type. I am working towards building an S-30/54 by using some of the Airfix components mated to the Revell kit. There's not a lot of the Airfix kit that will make it as far as the finished ship, but two WEM kits will be sufficient to do these four kits the way I have planned it, which makes them pretty good value. Hope you enjoy building the S-Boats. The ones still in existance in museums seem to be an overall RLM light gray, but, given the German propensity for camouflaging everything that moved, this seems unlikely, except when brand new (or preserved in an outdoor museum). Any pointers? I WOULD LIKE TO PUT IT IN A DISPLAY CASE. WHO MAKES THEM AT A REASONABLE PRICE? I TRIED ONE PLACE THAT I'VE SEEN MENTIONED ON THIS LIST, BUT CAN GET NO RESPONSE. Even lead shot for fishing got banned a few years ago but I have the ideas and will work along the lines suggested. I'm building the Revell Flower as HMS Lotus, wish I'd never started but thanks for asking! This is my return to the noble art after 25 years and the materials have changed so much. Thanks to all who responded to my request, I'll be back. Paul Harley ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: annobon4 Subject: USS Bon Homme Richard Hi Guys This is for sailing ship experts. Capt. John Paul Jones commanded the USS Bon Homme Richard in 1779. At the battle of Flamborough Head this ship fought the HMS Serapis. What was the overall lenght, breadth and draft of the Bon Homme Richard? Also has the wreck ever been located? If so how far down is it? Lastly the account I read says that the battle was fought close to the shore line. Could the locals from the shore watched?
