Sorry, couldn't resist. Regards, Mark Leonard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: Masts on U.S.S. Constitution ("Old Ironsides") I question whether the spanker "mast" is really a mast and not just a track to hold the spars since the masts themselves were constructed with greater girth than was customary in other frigates. This "mast" might be boxed in at its base on the spar deck, but, from the schematics of the frigate on the official website, it appears not to penetrate through this and lower decks like a real mast. So what exactly is it? Also, I'd like to thank those who responded to my request for info on the City class Civil War ironclads. Ken Goldman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Michael Taylor" Subject: Re: DISPLAY CASE www.customdisplaycases.com I've purchased hundreds from them over the past several years. Any size you like. Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: CONSTITUTION'S masts Unfortunately the listing of the twelve submasts carried by "Old Ironsides" lost something in translation on the electronic journey from Boston, Mass., USA to Australia and thence out to the world (and beyond ?). Basically, consider the submast list as having three prefixes (fore, main, and mizzen), each followed by main, top, topgallant, and royal), for a total of twelve, plus the mizzen trysail mast. Now, before anyone suggests the bowsprit as a mast (it too supports a sail and rigging), I submit there is a commonality in the defiinitions I found, and that is they use the words "vertical" or "upright" in their descriptions. Bowsprits are not upright, hence they do not strictly fit the definition. They cases are very reasonable and come in a wide selection of sizes. The only drawback is that their bases are black acrylic, not wood. But, for the money you save, you may want to get a wood base made to the dimensions of the acrylic base and just use the cover; or you can take a piece of finished wood stock and glue it to the base. A 26" x 6" x 6" case will run you about $67 plus shipping. You can find them on the web at: www.caseforcollectibles.com, or call them at: 1-800-582-9038. Very nice people to deal with, and very prompt service, too. Hope this helps, Bob LaPadura ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: David Miller Subject: Display case Dave in Dixie: Hi there! I would like to suggest making your own display case using plexiglass. For a small model like the Banner Arizona, the cost of 1/8 in Plexi would probably be under 10$. They also have UV resistant plexis if you want to display your model in window! Thin plexi cuts easily. A presentable case can be made using butt joints. I have used the Plastruct (and most other) liquid cement, seeped into the joints to glue the case together. One advantage of making your own case is that you are more likely to end up with a correctly sized case. Last week I made a small case for a 1/400 sub, and put a veneer edging on the corners of the case, hiding the joints and giving the appearance of a small "wood and glass" case. I made a nice bottom molding with my Dremmel router. If you can put together photoetch cage masts and railing you should be able to build a small case! Give it a try. I WOULD LIKE TO PUT IT IN A DISPLAY CASE. WHO MAKES THEM AT A REASONABLE PRICE << Try this site. I have bought several cases from them and they are Fantastic. If you don't see exactly the size you want, and they show hundreds, they will make one to a custom size. They are also really nice to deal with. You can even use my name as a reference if you want. I have nothing to do with them except being a very satisfied customer. http://www.casesforcollectibles.com/ Cheers, Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
