But in 1978 a book by authur John F Millar, called "American Ships of the Colonial and Revolutionary Periods" published by W.W.Norton & Company, Inc., referenced that as she was the converted French East Indiaman "The Duc de Duras" built in 1765 her measurements could be extrapolated from records of other ships of the same class and period. He gave the proposed dimensions of: Length Over All................. 186'10" Length between Perpendiculars... 152' = length on deck in this case. Lenght of Keel for tonnage...... 124'5" Breadth......................... 40' Depth in Hold................... 19' Draft........................... 19' Tonnage......................... 1,050 Thanks. Richard Sweeney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Douglas Simpkin Subject: Re: Display Case Another manufacturer of acrylic display cases with whom folks report having good dealings is on-line at http://www.bc-plastic.com/ (I'm not affiliated with them, although they're here in the Milwaukee area.) Doug ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "dengar" Subject: HMS (P219) Seraph Can anyone tell me when the Oerlikon Gun deck was added at the rear of the cab style conning tower on the S-Class Submarine Seraph. It appears from photographs that are not very good, that the boat had this configeration from early 1943. Cheers Gary McGee ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fritz Koopman Subject: Re: Constitutions masts Hi Franklyn! I have to admit you got me on the trysail mast. :-) But this would only increase the number of masts to ten (not thirteen). The Constitution has NO ROYALS. I know that someone tried to add the royals to the list, however it is incorrect. Check out the following photo: http://www.steelnavy.com/images/Constitution/con9.jpg looking at the mizzen in the foreground ( looking past the mizzen trysail mast wich is buried behind some canvas), and counting up, there is the mizzen mast, mizzen topmast, and mizzen gallant. No royals. The Main and foremast sets are similar but with the fore- or main- prefixes in place of the mizzen prefix. The names of the yards (and sails) from bottom to top (there are four) are as follows: mizzen mizzen top mizzen gallant mizzen top-gallant Similar for main and fore, just sub- in the prefixes. No royals..... :-) The gallant masts are let down in winter. Best regards From cloudy Salem, MA Fritz "the Royal pain" Koopman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Bargain Alert! Borders Books is selling Robert Ballard's "Return to Midway", which retailed for US$40, for $5.99 at many locations. MWL Alexandria, VA USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: WRPRESSINC Subject: HMS Keppel I am trying to locate photos of Keppel's port side taken during late 1941 showing her three coloured horizontally layered camouflage of unofficial origin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: CONSTITUTION's propulsion devices To Mike Leonard YOUR sorry you couldn't resist?? To Ken Goldman Good point. Now I will have to make a trip to CONSTITUTION to see for myself about the actual stepping of this of the mizzen trysail mast. I do know it is round and goes from the deck to the lowest mizzen doubling, but I do not know the details of the base,---- yet. I'll get back to you. I picked up the term from a seemingly well researched book. Thanks for the "excuse" to visit CONSTITUTION again.
