I believe the kit # is SW-1000. Thanks, Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Ken Durling Subject: Bonhomme Richard Nathan Miller's book "Broadsides" concurs that BHR's origin is the East Indiaman "Duc de Duras," I can only add from that text that she was a 42-gun ship, of mixed weaponry - many obsolete, and two 18-pounders exploded during the fight with Serapis. As to visibility from the shore, Miller does state that "a full moon had risen, and hundreds of Yorkshirmen gathered on Flamborough Head to watch the battle." Ken Durling IPMS/USS Hornet, Pres. She is currently under going intensive radiation treatment to be followed by six months of chemotherapy. The following is from the Canadian Cancer Society's pamphlet Radiation Therapy, You, A Guide to Self Help During Treatment, on page 57 under the heading Distraction. (I added the caps.) "Working with your hands, doing needlework, BUILDING MODELS, or painting may be helpful." Interesting eh? Happy modeling Keith Butterley warshipbooks.com PS I hope to see some of the Pacific North Wet SMMLies at the Vancouver IPMS fall show this Saturday ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: MrkLeonard Subject: Re: Constitution Propulsion Device thingies NAME ALERT- Please do not insult MIKE Leonard by thinking he's MARK Leonard. MIKE Leonard is a world-famous (in America) modeller and just plain heckuva nice guy. MARK Leonard is barely able to glue two pieces of plastic together without leaving fingerprints, and has a low, brutish sense of humor. You Have Been Warned! Regards- Mark Leonard Just Before the Medicine Kicked In ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: ED LARYEH Subject: CITY CLASS IRONCLADS For Ken Goldman (and others?) I, too, would like to know about painting for the "turtles" of the Western Gunboat Flotilla. I have 5 of them, so far, (scale 1:1200 and all plain black) and am working, very slowly, on having most of the civil war in my 5000+ model collection (hard to keep so many in anything larger than 1:1200) I was disappointed that the answers didn't come out in SMML. Ken: could you send anything on the subject of paintng that was sent to you directly to SMML so the rest of us can also see it? To the rest of you I would like to note that when you send a direct personal reply you may be leaving others with similar interests out in the cold. Please keep it in mind. Aryeh Wetherhorn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: jbgroby Subject: Painting schemes for the revell Spanish Galleon Hi Group, Does anyone have a source for the painting guidelines for the revell Spanish Galleon (the Large Kit). I have the kit instructions, but would like to get a better feel for the colors than what is written in the instructons. Also what would you consider to be the collect color for the lower hull. Was it white or (off white like antique) Jake Groby Jakes' Ship Shop ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: CONSTITUTION's rigging To Fritz Koopman I'm glad I saw your comments about CONSTITUTION's royals (or lack thereof) before I braved the Big Dig to visit The Ship again. I will indeed look into this. Right now I wouldn't be surprised to find that what I had thought were two masts (topgallant and royal) are really one, making a total of ten. I am going to bring my monocular (half a "binoculars") and optically climb aloft when I go. I'll also check the models and books in the Museum. Any opinions about the number of sails in a full suit (not withstanding the suggestion by superb modeler and Steel Navy's Captain Leonard)? Franklyn (from Holbrook, Mass., to which lead all roads) P.S. Are you a modeler? If so, have you considered joining the U.S.S. Constitution Model Shipwright Guild? We meet monthly in the brick building right next to where CONSTITUTION is berthed. I'm sure you will find kindred souls. RSVP F P.P.S. Oops, I'm afraid I may have given the wrong impression when I inadvertently referred to "Steel Navy's Captain Leonard", above. When I mentioned Steel Navy I was referring to his service in the U.S.Navy's "steel navy", not the excellent website so named. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Aragiannis Evangelos" Subject: Shimakaze IJN destroyer Hi, I was wondering if there are any detail enhancement parts for the IJN destroyer Shimakaze for the Tamiya 1/700 waterline series. Cheers, Evangelos Aragiannis ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Dafuelmann Subject: USS CONSTITUTION masts In response to "there are no royal masts", This mast is a spar that was mounted to the front of the t'gallant mast, it ran from above the t'gallant yard (in the raised position) to about 2/3 's the way to the truck. It was a tempory mast, only used in light winds. See Chappell's American Sailing Navy, or other such references. Actually I just looked in the Appendix, there are also "Skysail poles" listed, so we need to add 3 more masts to the list............ I think these were set up on deck with the yards & sails and then hoisted into position. Least ways I assume that's how it got done, the main Skysail pole is 39 feet long. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: u.brow Subject: Yamato flight Deck grating Hi there, After several years modeling in 1/700 waterline, Iīm trying now to build the Tamiya Yamato with Eduard PE. Now thereīs a problem which I canīt solve on my own. Neither the Tamiya instructions nor Mr. Skulskis book or any photo I posess show me what to do. On both sides of the flight Deck, just bevor the AA guns at the rear end of the Deck Yamato, there is a grating visible in the original plastic kit. Looking at the model which Guido Hopp has built, I can see that he cut out the whole plastic and replaced it by the very thin see-thru PE grating. Mr. Skulskis book shows nothing about it. Now I donīt know, if I should put the PE Parts onto the plastic or whether I should cut it out and glue the PE Parts instead of the plastic. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance Yours Udo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Kerry L. Jang" Subject: Bonhomme Richard The Bonhomme Richard was a converted French Indiaman called "Duc de Duras". A monograph on the Bonhomme Richard can be found on the Ancre site authored and drawn by Jean Boudriot. http://www.ancre.fr No plans of Bonhomme Richard exists, and Boudriot's mnograph is a reconstruciton based on plans of the Duc de Duras, French building practives of the day and French rcors of how the altered the Indiaman for the Continetal Navy. Besides this monograph, the story of the battle with HMS Serapis is detailed in another book published by Ancre. Although the Serapis struck to John Paul Jones, but tied up the Bonhomme Richard long enough (indeed, the Serpis outsailed the Americans and raked her several times - its shown in the book), the convoy Jones was after got away. In Portsmout there is the cup presentd to the British captain who lost his ship, but saved the convoy.
