PS: Sorry to hear of your daughter's problem and wishing her a full and speedy recovery. Sincerely, John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Colombo Thank you for your elucidation about Cristiforo Colombo aka Christopher Columbus. However, I think you sort of missed the point, as it far more likely that the kid was confusing Columbus with the TV detective Colombo, in the TV series of the same name. The kid's answer also suggested that "Colombo" had discovered the U.S. , not America, specifically Central America. And the Tour Guide's question was framed around a specific date, namely July 4 of 1776 (the signing of the colonies' Declaration of Independence from the Crown), whereas Columbus (Colombo if you choose) discovered America on October 12 of 1492. Apparently Columbus Day is more important to this kid than Independence Day because Columbus Day is a school holiday whereas Independence Day occurs during school's summer vacation. Hence no day off. I wouldn't be surprised if the kid never heard of Amerigo Vespucci, for whom the Americas were actually named (or did he run a pizza parlor downtown). I bet that frosted Chris' cake!!!! I wonder if the kid's History teacher was on the field trip. I hope the kid doesn't get a job producing the documentaries for the History Channel!!!!! "The Economist", Oct 5-11, p.94 writes, in the obituary for Captain Kathleen McGrath: "The Jarrett is one of the smallest ships in the Navy, but with fire-power greater than a battleship of the second world war." What type of ship is Jarrett, and what is her armament? Just wondering (and amazed) Richard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
