After the problems they have had this last week or so I too would like to publically thank you for the time you spent and everything else keeping this site up and running. You contribute to this hobby in a way most people simply couldn't do. Wheather, its just being patient with us or just the time. THANK YOU! cheers Russ Smith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: EDWARD GRUNE Subject: Re: Landing Craft colors Hi WR, I'm going to take a different tack than Hugh has. I have reviewed some of the photos of the Landing Craft Support (Large)-LCS(L) derivatives of the LCI landing craft. Below are links to NAVSOURCE that show just two examples of these craft being in camouflage for their builders photo portrait. Builder's photo of LCS(L)-111 in Measure 32/19L http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/1005011101.jpg Builder's photo of LCS(L)-25 in Measure 33/14L http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/1005002501.jpg There are other photo examples if you care to go through the page and find them. I do not have a ready link to post showing a LCS(L) in Measure 31/20L (green splotch) at time of acceptance. I have also seen a movie clip posted at the LCT veterans website showing the construction of a LCT from the raw, zinc chromate-primed components to acceptance testing of the finished craft. http://ww2lct.org/video/lct_real_video_page.htm The final scenes show the LCT being put through acceptance testing and it is painted in a Measure 31 green pattern. So my answer would be - a particular LCI, LCS, or LCT could have been painted either in camouflage or in overall gray. It would be a contractual thing. Specific research is required. Ed Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: EDWARD GRUNE Subject: Re: World War I Destroyer Colors - a followup question Hi SMMLies. Its good to be back. Way back in SMML1979, John Snyder responded to my query about possible US destroyer dazzle colors during WWI. My followup question deals with the WWI red color postulated. Would this color more likely have been a crimson red or would it have tended more to have been more of an insignia red-based color? Thanks Ed Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: AMDM Subject: Tug boat Jan looking for the plans to the tug boat jan, just the deck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Colour Interpretation B+W Photos On the Saturday Oct 26 broadcast of the TV show AGENCY our CIA backroom boys were trying to determine the colour of the eyes from the B+W photo of an Iraqi defector's dead wife. The show had us believe that the CIA had the technology to determine with certainty that the eyes of the woman in the photo were brown while the defector said his wife's were green. If this technology is for real imagine all that debate about ship colours would have been resolved once and for all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Edd Pflum Subject: Re: Amphipious Forces (Was: US Landing Craft (colours of)) Speaking of Landing Craft, are these included in Norman Friedman's Design History book, or does it only deal with the larger ships? I assume LSDs and LSTs are in there, and maybe LCIs and such, but does it go down to the LCMs and LCVPs? Edd P.S. to Shane and Lorna Many thanks for all your efforts. This is the only list I belong to that I archive completely (not that I can find anything when I want it!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Edd Pflum Subject: Re: More Colourcoats News >> First, for all you aircraft carrier builders out there, we're adding to our "one-stop shopping" by enlarging the Colourcoats line to include naval aircraft colours, starting with the USN. >> SNIP << Up until about 1942 each aircraft plant chose its own colour of zinc chromate primer. Then the USN and USAAF standardized on USN Interior Green, so that colour will do for aircraft interiors and all those folding wing and wheel well surfaces. << I saw an article a while ago (in FSM?) that stated many aircraft manufacturers continued to use non-standard colors in these areas. For example, Lockheed painted the wheel wells on P-38s Neutral Gray (including natural metal aircraft) rather than Zinc Chromate. Cockpit colors also appeared to vary. Did this affect naval aircraft as well? (After thousands of hours of research, Colourcoats has produced exact matches for naval paints. Add a little white for scale effect, a little brown for aging, a little red for rust,,, and Presto!, a perfect match! :-P) Edd ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Dafuelmann Subject: aircraft colours Hey John, Boy, talk about good timing!!!!!! Which of your new USN Aircraft colors will I need for the "Operation Torch" aircraft I'm making for the Sangamon I'm building? Also, would you know the correct colors for the P-40"s that went over as "deck cargo"? Thanks, David ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Arthur Taylor" Subject: Re: Continuing Victorian Saga "John Rule" asks for input on the color of HMS "Inflexible" as suggested by the b/w image shown on the quoted site. Specifically, he is interested in an intermediate tone between the hull black and the superstructure white. The arrangement was certainly unusual, but in more ways than he mentioned. First, the foremast and funnels appear to be very dark, maybe even the black of the hull. Then the mainmast is much lighter, having the same tone as the "intermediate" strip. The classical Victorian rig for capital ships in temperate stations was: black hull; white superstructure; buff funnels, masts and cowl ventilators. There were variations, I am told, which might have been found, but it has to be surmised that these were of a detail nature. The site picture shows a ship in the background which appears to have the classic color scheme. My guess is that the "intermediate" color was buff or a yellow tone as for the mainmast; the stripe on the turret was white. "Inflexible" was an odd-looking ship. Brian King, in his book "Modelling Late Victorian Battleships", lists her as being launched in April 1874, in answer to Italian battleships such as "Duilio". However, in the text he describes his model of "Duilio" as at 1876; this could have represented a configuration after refit. Brian's text, and a caption to his model of the ship, refers to "Inflexible" as "1870" --- so there is some confusion in the dates. The photo of the model shows no "intermediate" tone above the black hull; it is white like the rest of the superstructure. The funnels and masts are buff. I have seen this model myself. A similar treatment is shown in the adjacent photo of the model of "Inflexible" made by John Prothero-Thomas. Both these gentlemen are very knowledgeable of Victorian warships, and pursuers after accuracy. So, after all that, what could be the explanation? One might be that, at the time of the photo, the ship was painted in an experimental scheme. Another that the foremast and funnels might have had an orange hue which could show up very dark in the photo film of the time; the "intermediate" color could have been a buff or yellow which still showed light. The mainmast for some reason was the same color. The third possibility is that the ship had just returned from a distant assignment, in the middle of which she had required some repainting; unfortunately, the local dockyard had misunderstood the instructions and applied buff to the "intermediate" strip and black to the funnels. Surely the long-boat at the end of the boom is being prepared to row the Captain ashore in response to an apoplectic signal from the Port Admiral. By the way, this web-site, which has other interesting photos of Victorian RN ships, invites e-mail correspondence. The address is StephenJohnson1@compuserve.com However, I have tried to communicate with this person on several occasions, and every time the e-mail has been rejected ("...address had permanent fatal errors.."). Another SSL member, John Chankin, also tried, with no success. The team coordinator of Naval Warfare Simulation, Chris Aka, also tried, with no success. I confess I haven't been brave enough to go through all this again. Brian Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Peter Crandall" Subject: Scratchbuilding I have just recently gotten into scratchbuilding 1/350 ships. I have been surprisingly succesful at building the Shinano using Tamiya's Yamato hull. I can scratch build a ship ONLY IF I already have a pre-molded hull. My problem is that I am interested in building other ships that do not have a closely related hull that I can work off of. How would I go about scratch building a hull with plastic? (I only use plastic.) What tools, sanders, skills, and knowledge are needed for this task? I appreciate any help that can be given. Thank You. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Peter Crandall" Subject: ICM Does anyone know if ICM has finally come out with the Essex, Hood, or Takoe models yet? Hi Peter, Don't hold your breath for ICM doing these ships - however Trumpeter have taken over the moulds for the Essex & it's due out very soon. As for the other two, well we'll wait n see if the same happens there. Either the scale is not what I want or have lost interest in the type. These are never opened kits. They are WW2 and post war kits. If anyone is interested in purchasing all the kits (all or nothing as I don't want to be burdened with a lot of mailings but maybe I would go for splitting the list in half - let me know your desires). If you are interested reply with a bid. In a week I will announce who gets the lot. Don't be shy. These are nice kits and I am not trying to get my money back. Any good bid will be accepted.
