You might try using high density foam (about 30lb. is best). You can work it like wood without worrying about the grain. I am presently building a waterline 1/200 scale ship using it and I highly recommend it. Depending on the size of the ship, you can use plastic like Evergreen and do the traditional skeleton/rib or you can go "bread and butter" by building the hull in progessive layers, then doing a final shape later. Bottom line is to get the BEST plans and as much information on your subject before you start and finish the project once you start it. Welcome to insanity! Randy Chisum ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: NAVYDAZE Subject: Re: Colour Interpretation B+W Photos With modern technology anything is possible - but usually B & W are hard to interpret because because a B & W film will see red as dark or black and blue as white or nothing. So brown having some red in it would appear darker - green having some blue in it would appear somewhat lighter so maybe that is how they do it - who knows but something to think about when dealing with B&W photos. Michael Donegan NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Hubert Letterly Subject: LCT colors Hi Ed, I agree with you, a modeler has to research the particular craft that they model because of the color schemes. Some of those color schemes are spectacular. There was one with a Gator painted on the front like the nose art on aircraft. Do you suppose that if both you and I would lobby John and Caroline, those great greens that we both want could be put on a higher priority? My sight is so poor that I can't see the demarcation lines in the photos between the Ocean Gray and the Deck Blue that are in the yard specs. I would imagine that a large majority would have been repainted judging from the variety of camouflage schemes. Does anyone know what colors the LCT -2, 3, and 4 were painted. As I recall, the Skywave kit doesn't go into great detail. Could someone be so nice to scan them and send them to me? I really would like to start this one! Thank you very much! Which of your new USN Aircraft colors will I need for the "Operation Torch" aircraft I'm making for the Sangamon I'm building? Also, would you know the correct colors for the P-40"s that went over as "deck cargo"? << I believe the P-40s were painted the same as applied to Kittyhawks supplied to the RAF in the desert. This would be Mid Stone and Dark Earth over Azure Blue. Curtiss substituted American paints for the British standards, but they would have been close to British practice. White stars in blue disks (no bars) with a yellow surround in four or six positions. Some aircraft had an American flag painted on the fuselage in front of the national insignia. Probably P-40Fs, but I can't find a picture of the actual ferry missions. Add a little white for scale effect, a little brown for aging, a little red for rust,,, and Presto!, a perfect match! :-P) << AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUGH!! >> Boy, talk about good timing!!!!!! Which of your new USN Aircraft colors will I need for the "Operation Torch" aircraft I'm making for the Sangamon I'm building? Also, would you know the correct colors for the P-40"s that went over as "deck cargo"? << Hi David, The Torch aircraft were in the 2-colour scheme using ACUS 06 Blue Gray over ACUS 05 Light Gray. I can't help you with the P-40s, but suspect that others here can. Support your local dealer who carries Colourcoats (and a number do), or you can get them from us and other fine mail-order businesses. They were obviously impressed with what I was doing as I came home with drawings, both external and internal detail for this weapon. (Nothing that time on the construction of the 21" and 18" Torpedo Tubes for RN Coastal Forces - but that was resolved elsewhere). I have a single sheet on the 21" Torpedo in my Plans Service.(L/O/125). See www.john-lambert-plans.com. At present I am working on five (Yes 5) alternative designs of 1943 to upgun the 71' 6" British Power Boat MGB of 1942, with improved gun and torpedo armament. These ideas were design projects of the Late George Selman their Chief Designer, which were passed on to me in the form of microfiche. (Along with many other British Power Boat projects). Nice and easy to store, but oh the problems I have had in making them readable, to redraw. But I'm getting there. They will hopefully be shown in our Volume 3 of "Allied Coastal Forces of WW II". (But my efforts will be added to my plans service first)! Welcome back Shane & Lorna, - I too WAS getting withdrawal symptoms! Basically, the idea is that, back in the 1700-1800s, guys like Edison invented ways to fly in space (I think it was called an Ether drive), and went to Mars - which, of course, had Martians. Additionally, Mars has something called 'liftwood' - thats right, wood that lifts/floats. Earthers build things called 'Aeronefs' (floating ships, ala WWI style), the Martians fly gallies - just like in that movie. Some guy even got one of these ships in FSM. IHS, Ralph ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Re: Continuing Victorian Saga I did have a look at the photo of Inflexible John wrote about and while indeed there appears to be a band of intermediate colour between white of the superstructure and black of the hull I think that it is either an optical illusion or that the ship was photographed in some sort of a very temporary state (half way throu the painting process???). While it is true that painting scheme of the ship was very much responsibility of the commander of the ship (right down to buying extra paint above the service allowance of one coat of white zinc per annum*) and while there were no strict rules as to where exactly black ends and white begins non the less the scheme of black hull (with or without white stripe), white superstructure and buff funnels, cowles and masts was adopted universally. According to R.A.Burt it was queen Victoria who wished her ships to be painted that way and there was a strong lobbly who thought this system most suitable for all occasions. That and the inborn conservatism of the Royal Navy caused that while other nations started experimenting with other colour schemes sometime in 1890s the Royal Navy didn't do so until 1902*. Back to Inflexible. IMO it would have been very brave or very excentric ship commander who would have decided to paint his ship differently against existing custom and unlike any other ship in the fleet and we have hundreds of photos of Her Majesty ships in black, white and ochre but only one (and not even a hight quality one) of Inflexible in black, "intermediate", white and buff. Besides there exist other photos of Inflexible showing her painted black with white stripe up to the forecastle deck level (turrets are black with white stripe too) with white superstructure and ochre upperworks. In short a single photo of any ship is never IMO enough to draw conclusion as to the paint scheme she was wearing at any appreciable length of time during her career. As for the other two, well we'll wait n see if the same happens there. << No Shane, not you too! The Trumpeter Essex is all new tooling based on Tom Harrison's (of Tom's Modelworks) 1:350 scale Essex. It is NOT the ICM Essex. The Trumpeter Essex is due in the middle-to-end of the first quarter of 2003. If the Hornet sales tank - that date could be stretched out. The Lexington II (CV-10) is due a month after the CV-9. There have been unsubstantiated rumors, or perhaps its all wishful thinking, that Trumpeter has obtained the ICM Hood molds. Believe it if and when there is an announcement from Trumpeter. As far as I have heard, there was no real development on any of the other announced models beyond the boxart for the web site. Like Shane said. Don't hold your breath for ICM. Ed Mansfield, TX I stand corrected on the Essex- thanks Ed. However, on the issue of the Hood, that's what the distributors out here are telling the traders - so who knows.
