Bismarck. For Bismarck as she was during her only operation, see: http://www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/paint_schemes/paintbism1941rheinubung.html He has other paint schemes for Bismarck in 1941 (pre Rheinübung) as well at: http://www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/paint_schemes/paintbism1941.html The paint schemes are EXTREMELY reliable and based on VERY good information. II. Tirpitz Haven't seen anything reliable for her on the web yet. I'm sure it's out there somewhere though. Here are some colour photos: http://www.bismarck-class.dk/tirpitz/gallery/galltirincolour.html III. Paints You can get exact paint matches over at White Ensign Models (Colourcoats for the Kriegsmarine). Good paints! David also regularly contributes to the SubCommittee Report, and has done extensive articles with illustrations on many of these topics. I''l poke around in the back issues and see what is there. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Ives100 Subject: hypodermic needle Battleship gun barrels For the five inch guns I have found that using 22 gauge hypodermic needle's is a perfect match. Let me preface this with the statement that as an emergency room physician I can get a good supply of these which then are cut off with a Dremel cut off wheel. Let me pre-preface this by saying be VERY careful cutting off hypodermic needles with a Dremel, wear eye protection! Or else you may be visiting the good doctor in his ER (OK, Richard, where? Jefferson, Hahnemann, U of P, Graduate, elsewhere?? Might as well send Phila area shipbuilders to someone sympathetic with our sometimes *unique* injuries! You got superglue WHERE!!??). Also do NOT dumpster dive for needles- hepatitis, AIDS and other issues make this a very risky practice. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Daniel Bauer" Subject: Re: Scratchbuilding Hulls Hello, I to would be interested in the address of the phototyping board. Is it available in the US as well? Regards Dan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: RPayne8452 Subject: Flags Shaya- I've had great success in ordering from modelflags.com - www.modelflags.com for all of my cloth flags. They have provided me with flags for Revelle's Arizona, a little paddleboat and Tamiya's Bismark. Even though they are in jolly old England, the service is surpurb and pricing is reasonable. I usually get my orders within a couple of weeks here in South Texas. Please note - I have no financial affiliation with this company just a happy camper! Bob Payne San Antonio, Texas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Daniel Bauer" Subject: Re: Bismarck & Tirpitz Colours Hello, There are several Websites where you can find the info you need. In my experience www.bismarck.dk is one of the best. You have a specfic month that you want Tirpitz, and that is good. However with Bismarck you will find that he was painted over several times in the course of 1941.During Rhienubung, different parts of Bismarck were painted on different days during the Operation. So you need to think about at what month, and maybe even what date you want to show Bismarck. Good Luck, and Happy Modeling, Dan Bauer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Richard Sweeney Subject: Missing Tank... Leave it to the RAF to have "lighter than Air" Tanks... ;^) Rich Sweeney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: SteveWiper Subject: Re: Colour Interpretation B+W Photos >> So let me get this right. A man said his wife,s eyes were green and the CIA said they were brown and we are supposed to believe the CIA! << Terry, Its even better! It was the CIA as portrayed by Hollywood! Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: CONSTITUTION's sails To Fritz Koopman and David Griffith Thanks for your input on the subject of CONSTITUTION's sails. In Magoun's book "THE FRIGATE CONSTITUTION AND OTHER HISTORIC SHIPS" (copyrighted in 1928) the author states" There were some thirty sails in all, studding sails, jibs, staysails, spanker, and regular square sails.", and he goes on to list all 30 of them. His phrasing "some thirty sails" leaves the matter open, as "some thirty" does not necessarily mean "exactly thirty", also, he does not state the time period of this number. I have seen various drawings showing 3, 4 (the current configuration) and 5 square sails on each mast, obviously this would affect the total. A careful modeler would have to take this into account. Regardless of the exact number, it must have been a sight to behold, seeing all sails (be it 30 or 49) set and filling. Incidentally, if a modeler elects to make a waterline model, and have 30 (at least) sails pulling, be sure to consider making your sea surface quite smooth, as I don't think the Sailing Master would have all sails set in anything other than calm to very light breezes. Otherwise there could be considerable stress on the rigging. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Colour Interpretation B+W Photos Good one Terry!! I think we can conclude from all that information that most likely the woman eyes were probably Blue!!! Mike Navydaze ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Terry Wiltshire Subject: Re: Fantasy >> In regards to D.Przezdziecki about the space ship game etc, I also just remembered a Dr Who episode where I think there was a race between "sailing" ships in space..if I remember correctly the main ship was a style of Galleon & the others were of mix styles. I think I only saw the episode once ( & I don't think I was a big fan of that particular doctor) so I cant really re-call it, so maybe you could have a space ship race using old sailing ships Well anyhow, might be worth checking with any friends that are doctor fans & seeing if they know the episode ..i think it was towards the end of the series << Andrew That very episode was shown on the UK Gold satellite channel last weekend. The special effects were pretty ropey in the best traditions of Dr Who. Some of the sailing ships looked just like plastic kits which knowing the BBC is probably exactly what they were. A chap called Matt Irvine who I met some time ago and used to write in Scale Models Magazine could well have been responsible. He used to work on special effects for the BBC and told me his budget was about a fiver per episode. I think the Dr was played by Peter Davidson. Terry Budapest ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "John Rule" Subject: HMS Invincible >> When I look at the picture, there are obviously (canvas?) awnings draped over the stern. The awnings on the stern seem to have similar tonal values to the gray stripe running the length of the hull. The gray stripe running the length of the hull seems to have irregularities (folds and shadows) in the surface, like a canvas awning, rather than a smooth steel surface--look particularly at the ripples in the section below the ventilation funnels. << I also thought this at first, but on closer examination, I changed my mind. I think a lot of the "irregularities" are caused by ropes obscuring the image. It does very much look like paint. On a lighter note it also looks a lot like masking tape. Sincerely, John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Dafuelmann Subject: P-40's Many thanks to all who have responded to my question on the Torch P-40's. The information will be very helpful!! Shane & Lorna, SMML is a great resource, thanks again for taking the time to keep it going. David ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "John Rule" Subject: HMS Inflexible On the site I pointed out the other day as shown below, there is a photo of HMS Edinburgh and guess what............she has the same colour scheme as the Inflexible. Now is it possible that these photos were both taken during painting or does this indeed represent an alternate or experimental scheme? http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/7155/ The quest continues. Sincerely, John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: Re: Prototyping Board Dan Taylor wrote about a product called Prototyping Board. I for one would certainly like to know of a source here in the UK. I would say that it is in the 85 to 95% condition, only the engine halvews have been put together. I found it at a rumage sale, and I really don't know why I picked it up other than its condition and age. If anyone is interested, please contact me off list and I would be more than happy to talk to them. Thanks for a great site for info.
