While we are having fun working out the actual colours of black & white photos, can anyone tell me the colours of HMS Magnificent, Agamemmon & Harpy as attached? Michael Brown Photos (& archives) uploaded to the SMML site under Misc Reference Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Fred Liedel" Subject: Re: Tirpitz 1944 In the book I have on her "The Tirpitz Lone Queen of the North" by Jochen Brennecke he states the deck colours as being a medium green and medium brown. Bearing in mind he served on her for over three years right up until her sinking, I would rate his opinion as probably one of the best to go by. The book by the way was printed in 1963 so one would say his memory would still be pretty good. Just a thought. The Lufftwaffe used a medium olive green for their buildings [ said to be the same colour as used in the late war ambush scheme on the German tanks]. Maybe that would be a good starting point. Regards Fred ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Fred Liedel" Subject: Re: Roma Overhead shots of Roma along with her sisters are very rare. But according to Regia-Marina Italian Battleships of WW2 plus other photos I have of this class from various books and videos, I would say the decks are painted a dark gray as well as the area around the catapult. The bow as per normal would have had the red and white stripes. At times some Italian ships allso had the red and white stripes on the stern. But bearing in mind Roma never really went to sea [in combat] like her sisters I don't think this would have been done to her. Surprise surprise they had one. Spent the next 2 hrs searching through a donated collection of all things Maritime without joy. Apparently mis filed, I hope! Point is its a large collection and I mean substanial and well worth a look for any one visiting Adelaide. Its called the Maguire Collection and is on the first floor. Allow plenty of time, its quite diverse. rgds denis james ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: paulship37 Subject: Interesting items on eBay I saw these items for sale at eBay. While I cut them with a mitre cutter, I find that the cut edge is not 90 degrees, but is about 85 to 88 degrees. Of course, this is because cutting edge of a single edge razor is not really perpendicular, while the rest of the blade is. I've tried sanding them with a true sander, but still do not end up with that crisp 90 degree cut. It's damn difficult to get pieces of plastic less that 3 mm long to sand cleanly. How are you guys doing it? Does anyone know if the Armada Scale 1/350 HMCS Kootenay is still (or ever was) available? Terry Budapest Where it has just started to snow ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: HMS Nolfolk and WEM Paints Hi John, We have two different versions of B55 in the Colourcoats line, and both are matched precisely to Admiralty shade cards. Both were apparently available in 1943, so perhaps what you are seeing in the photos is the other, non-blue B55 which we have labelled as the late-war version. That version of B55 is described in Commonwealth Navy Orders 1943 (and referencing AFO 2106/1943) as "Light Grey" (which is certainly how I would describe it visually) and is referenced as superseding MS4A. As for those other colours, B15 is being prepared right now and hopefully will be with us this week or next. For the G series, you're just going to have to be patient. We've currently got Barry working flat out on a whole host of new colours while trying to keep the existing ones in stock. He's working on 12 new USN colours, 9 or 10 aircraft colours, and I'm sending him 8 Regia Marina colours today to put into production. Our bottom line is that we have to look carefully at the kits that are out there and available with regard to the colours they used, and the G-series RN colours are a lower priority than some others. All Hands have specific assignments for any condition on the ship. Also on old sailing vessels almost all hands were trained seamen first. Only senior personnel were Ships Carpenter, Gunner, Quartermaster, Sailing Master etc. So most of the crew could handle the sailing requirements, and were familiar with basic gunnery. The noise and carnage would be horrific, but you must remember that in many Navies instant obidience to orders was the norm, the punishment for not obeying could be very deadly.Ships Commanding officers had almost unlimited power of life or death over crewmembers, and then there was the incentive of being the prize crew! Wayne ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: ELLshipmodeler Subject: Re: Wood Deck NJ - color Unless you want to represent the deck as just holystoned or wet after a rain, the color is gray, not teak color. Being exposed to the sun the wood surface ages. Many models are inaccurately shown with a bright wood finish the color of new teak or cherry. I have photos of the NJ taken two weeks ago during the NRG conference. Everything is gray. In fact, the deck is in great need of replacement. Probably a project for the future by the current custodians.
