This book states that Hermes was never fitted with radar but, that it was not clear if the homing beacon had been fitted. Regards, Miles F. McLaughlin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: NAVYDAZE Subject: Shrapnel and fragmentation Robert, OK, I stand corrected - fragments. I think everyone came up with a lot of good answer and I am willing to bet that most of them contributed to the reason - including just having wooden decks for show or historic value. Now will some of you quit picking on the deck departments as needing something to do - we had plenty to do - we also had to tie those knot thingies and sing sailor songs - "Yo ho, Yo ho a sailors life for me" Michael Donegan NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Joe & Adrienne Norris Subject: Decal Stock I just bought a few sheets of clear decal sheet for use in a color inkjet printer. The vendor did not have the sealing spray (to protect the ink from the water). Does anyone know of a good substitute that can be airbrushed on? Thanks in advance! Joe Norris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Russ Smith" Subject: Re: HMS Hermes Thanks to those who pointed out that it was a homing beacon. The shape is generally similar to 271/272 radar Lanterns so I wondered. As to the kit I have quite a few HP Models. I think this may one of the best. The detail on the hull is really good and the flight deck has more detail than my Glorious or Courageous. The deck comes in three pieces and has that characteristic hump. The elevators can be left down or up and there is some detail to the hanger walls. The parts all come in a thin wafer that cleans pretty easily. That being said, it can be a problem to get small guns and searchlights free without breaking them. I try to keep some WEM 1/700 pro parts on hand so if I do get a little heavy handed I can still turn out alright. Its a nice kit at a good price that I for one am very happy to have. I'm afraid I don't have much of a camera (I'd rather buy models) but thats my opinion of this model. Again, thanks to those who answered my question about that dome. Regards; Russ Smith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SceneN3D Subject: Photo etched ship parts availability Is anyone aware of a manufacturer of P/E ships railings, hatches, etc (preferably for USN vessels) produced in 1/300 scale? Thanks in advance for any help with this. First for Randy and the Aurora USS Enterprise CVAN-65 in 1/400 scale. In the John Burns 7th editon of the Collector's Value Guide for Scale plastic model kits lists No.721 in 1/391 scale and worth $100.00 if in mint condition. But that 's up to you. Craig Bennett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Shirley Sachsen Subject: Aurora Enterprise >> I ran across an Aurora kit of CVN-65 (identified on the box as CVAN-65), USS Enterprise. 1/400 scale, kit no. 721. Copyright 1976. Box has some water damage to top, decals are mildewed (possibly salvagable). All plastic parts are clean and appear to still be sealed in plastic bags, except for the aircraft, which were removed from the sprues and placed in a ziploc bag. (Obviously, one bag may have been opened to get to the a/c - 'haven't checked. Island has the classic "beehive" top. 'Any idea what it might be worth? << I paid 95 for mine I found at an antique fair--but the box isn't damaged and the decals are intact--just a little shelf wear. shirley ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: annobon4 Subject: Re: French A/C Carrier "Arromanches" Hi Roy Concerning your request about the Arromanches I have found a website called Muse'e de la Marine it's in Paris Franceand they have 3 color photos of the Arromanches in 1954 in the form of a 1/100 scale model. This is the second item I wanted to answer I hope this is of help. I entered French carrier Arromanches for the web search and it #18 of 130 web sites dealing with this subject. Craig Bennett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Erhardtsen" Subject: Livermore At the moment I am building the Sky Wave of DD-429 Livermore. To my surprise I see, that Sky Wave specify part B6 - the 5" cal. 25 fore the open mount, and not the cal. 38 (part B5) - that must be an error? None of my books mention any cal. 25 in this class of ships. My biggest problem with this ships is the 0.5" machineguns. Where was they placed? There should have been 6, but nothing is shown in the kit. I have found out, that 2 are placed on the platforms between the 2 open 5" guns, but where do I place the rest? Erik Erhardtsen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Daniel Taylor" Subject: Short Hull Schnellboot Hi Having already built one S-100, begun another, and being in the process of finishing a conversion to an S-38, I'm beginning to wonder what to do with my next Revell Schnellboot. The answer seems to be to build the short hull S-30/54 series. There are a number of good photographs of the beast in Steve Wiper's book and I have managed to create a set of plans through devious means. There are, however, a couple of issues I have regarding armament fits that I hope these may be answered through members of the list. They come down to the weapons fit. The photographs in the book appear to be earlier war examples. There is no forward 2cm sunk in the forecastle deck and there is a single 2cm at the rear. However, from the photographs on Dave Krakow's site there is an excellent set about a short hull vessel sunk in the Adriatic, S-57. These photographs, taken by Thomas Braun and Jaromir Zalis clearly show a hole in the forward deck for the Dehrkranz mount and the extensive shots of the twin 2cm seem imply that it has replaced the single mount. Is this how anyone else sees it? I'd really like to know if anyone has any idea when this improvement to the armament took place. It also started me wondering whether they may have used the kalottenbruke on the shorter hull vessels.
