The book I believe is an Almark publication but I fear long out of print. TaT To add to Bert's comment, I can recommend the following book: Tribal & Battle class Destroyers published by the Naval Historical Society of Australia. See review on the SMML site. Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Roy Knight" Subject: Stripping paint Hey all; I am in need of some information, what is the best way to stip the paint off of a plastic model. It is an enamel paint and I would, if at all possible not weaken the plastic. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks Roy Knight ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Teak Decks The responses so far seem too trite as reasons to go through the expense and bother to line battleship decks with teak. Teak decks add nothing to the ships' fighting capabilities. I think there are better things for the admiralty to do than to make work for idle sailors to holystone them. I have thought up a better reason although this is purely speculative. Maybe some naval historian can check it out. During the time of transition from wood to steel hulled warships Britain was at the height of its imperial glory and its Royal Navy was the queen of the seas. Pictures of those time showed the Royal Family spending quite a lot of time onboard the pride of the Royal Navy, aka big gun battleships, as make believe sailors complete with admiral's uniform and medals, with their little princelings in equally cute naval garb. The Kaiser and the Tsar could do no less on their side of the continent. And whatever the Royal Navy did navies of the other powers were sure to follow. With those resplendent uniforms and polished shoes, plus their ladies with their voluminous crinoline dresses dragging the deck it wouldn't do to have slippery oily steel decks full of ruts and studs to trip their dainty feet. Carpets were non starters. Well polished wood would seem the best solution and raw teak the best wood for hardness (a lot of heavy metal things get dropped on a warship), easy maintenance, durability and resistance against waterlogging and rot. Since only the best battleships were worthy of a royal presence only they got the teak deck treatment. Sounds good? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: RCClem Subject: Potemkin "Black" and "White" Color Mix After painting a USS Olympia a shade of gray that I was sure was correct, only to stand back and see that it was much too dark at scale sizes........... The color scheme I am researching for the Potemkin includes a good deal of black on the superstructure. But I fear that a straight flat black will look too black, maybe too flat. Unfortunately, there are not too many color photos of warships painted black. Lets say I start with Tamiya's XF-1 Flat Black. What would be a good mixing color (XF-2 Flat White??) and at what mixture? Would a very little gloss help appearances? My same fears apply to large applications of flat white on superstructures. Large areas of Flat White (XF-2) seem too white. Can anyone recommend a mixture to knock off the brilliance? I think I can approximate the other non-white colors. Few would know if they are off a little bit. But we seem to "know" if black and white are right or not. Thanks for any experience or insight. Roger Clemens Hinsdale, Illinois PS - At our IPMS Butch O'Hare Model Show today, there were not many vendors with ship kits to offer. But there was one that had a matching set of the Nachimo 1:300 (yes 1:300) Yamato, Musashi and Shinano. But he wanted low 4-figures to sell only as a set. No split. If interested, I may be able connect you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Lamar B. Jones" Subject: 1/350 aircraft decals Does anyone know of a source for 1/350 US aircraft decals, circa 1942 or so? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "shaya" Subject: 1/700 Kursk I haven't looked inside the box does the 1/700 Tamiya Kursk only come in waterline.
