Anyway if I were to throw all the guts away and seal up the foldaway hull - making a full hull model - how accurate is the hull and sail to just make it a desk top model. I am sure it could be detailed somewhat. With all of the talk about scale whites and blacks, I wondered if any smmlies had any specific preferences or comments about the white used by the USCG? Should I use a creamy white, a blue-white, or white with a tint of gray on my Revell Roger B Taney? All thoughts appreciated. regards Stephen Allen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "David Griffith" Subject: Re: Paint stripper I've used "Mr Muscle" oven cleaner quite a lot for stripping paint and find that it works quite well on both plastic and resin. I do think that it makes fine plastic parts slightly brittle, so be a bit careful. My warning about it though, is that it also dissolves cyanoacrylate glue. Earlier this year I was working on a Tamiya Kumano, and had replaced all the steam pipes on the funnel with wire, built new mast, lots of bits of railing, etc. when the painting went wrong and I had to strip it. You've guessed it, all my painstakingly stuck on bits ended up at the bottom of a puddle of strong and very grubby alkali. Re-doing it was not a practical option and the ship ended up consigned to that scrapyard that is the green bin outside the back door. You have been warned!!! I think I'll give the brake fluid a whirl next time. Regards, David Griffith PS Congratulations to everyone who won anything at Telford last weekend; and also to everyone who didn't win anything, but just entered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "David Griffith" Subject: USS Texas, BB35 Dear all, I wonder if anyone out there can help me. I want to start doing the Samek model of the USS Texas. I understand that she wore a disruptive scheme for a short period of time from October 1944 to about February 1945. Leeward Publications, C F Moore's website, and the kit instructions variously describe it as either a Measure 33 or a Measure 31 scheme, and each one shows a starboard view. I have not been able to locate a port side view, either photo or diagram. Floating Drydock do not appear to list a design for the Texas in their colour cards, either. As the scheme was only worn for a few months, it is entirely possible that the information I require does not exist anywhere, and I shall be forced to use an overall navy blue finish. If anyone does have any information or leads, I should be very grateful indeed. Regards, David Griffith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Teak >> I believe that teak is highly resistant to splintering. Much more so than oak or other hard woods. That's one of the reasons it was used in WWII USN carrier flight decks. << Except that I think you'll find that U.S. carrier flight decks were Douglas fir, mostly from the Pacific Northwest.
