I can live with that. Michael Donegan NAVYDAZE Naval & Aviation Artist http://www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Peter Subject: Coast Guard White Regarding how white US Coast Guard White is, I make no claim to accuracy. However, if you wanted to see what Tamiya Acrylic Flat White looks like on a USCG vessel, you can see my JAG 1/700 Hamilton here: http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/misc/uscg/700-hamilton-late/jag-pv.html The "white" you see is Tamiya Acrylic Flat White sprayed from a can over light gray resin, unprimed. The black is Tamiya Acrylic Flat Black. I oversprayed the finished ship with Mr. Color Dullcoat as semi-glossy does not look right to me at this scale. The decals are from the kit and the orange on the decals looks very close to what the USCG uses, even if the photos change the tint. The other orange, on the helo, is Tamiya Acrylic Orange straight from the bottle and is arguably off-shade from the real thing. While how you see the colors in the photos online has a lot to do with the color settings on your monitor, you might be able to get a look at one version of "white" and adjust your own based on the example. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Rod Dauteuil" Subject: Cost of drawings >> As to your cost, I will use the sophisticated pricing structure so popular with the automobile companies, to wit: Price of a copy $29,999 Less Rebate $20,000 $999 Less cash discount $999 Grand Total $00,000 (plus 5% Massachusetts sales tax) << Franklyn, You're a shrewd businessman--You charge $9,000.00 for copies? No wonder you people down in Holbrook are so rich. Rod (in Methuen Mass.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Converting a W W 1 sub chaser into a yacht To: James Paquill Jim, please forgive me if I failed to notify you that Filip and yourself (and any of the others of the Paquill clan) do indeed have a perpetually open invitation to visit at any time. This is especially true now that the sub chaser model is encased. But don't expect a ride in the Model A Roadster until next April or so. Remember two things. First: I never put the top up (unless I get caught in an unpredicted shower), and Second: I live (if you can all it that in winter) in New England, and the Ford and I are in the primary soporific stage of our annual hibernation. See my offer (elsewhere in SMML Volume 2015) to Dave Lombard. Surely it's one he can't refuse!!!! Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Correct Italian sub colors To: Rod Dauteuil Your correction of the colors for an Italian sub is indeed quite tastefully done, albeit incomplete. Please be advised that a fully correct color scheme for an Italian sub includes selected cheeses and lettuce as well. The purpose of the lettuce is very subtle, i.e., to make the sub acceptable to weight-watchers. And depending on the location of the builder, sometimes pickles and onions are included. The Italians are quite adept at achieving visual anonymity without the use of expensive stealth technology. Have you ever seen a stealth version of their naval vessels? No? Doesn't that prove how successful they are? Gotta go now, here comes my keeper. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Ives100 Subject: Re: Lafayette class sub Concerning David Well's comments about the model. David is correct, Revell has their own version called the "Show Off" models of the Polaris SSBNs. These are smaller (18 inches in length vs, 24 for the Renwals), and as David points out, generally inferior (although the engineering spaces may be marginally better). However, I went onto the Revell Germany website, and confirmed that it is indeed the old Renwal mold that Revell acquired that is being reissued. This was previously reissued by Revell as the "Andrew Jackson" in the mid 1970's, and by Renwal in the '60's as the Ethan Allen and Thomas Jefferson (clear hull side versions). Ken's conversion article was about the solid hull Ethan Allen, not the clear hull Jefferson. David's other point is well made. Renwal made two slightly different versions of the kit: one to represent the Washington class, distinguished by the forward truncation of the missile turtleback (these boats were conversions of the Skipjack class SSNs to an interim SSBN design), and one of the Ethan Allen class. Lafayettes were later, and had longer hulls. I am building a late model Polaris/Poseidon SSBN in resin at this moment (BWN kit). The hull shape of this kit is noticeably different from the three Renwal kits that I own. As a closing note, I do have a lot of submarine reference material (including a few Lafayette class drawings). It took a long time to gather it all, and the project is still underway (much to my wife's dismay at times). In any case, I am very happy to share any information I might have on a given submarine or class with anyone interested. Most of my information is on American submarines (modern and particularly fleet boats) and U-boats, with some former Soviet Union subs. Almost nothing on British, European, or Asian subs.
