Her radar configuration for this refit included both Mk. 3 and MK. 4 fire control radars, SG surface search radar on a platform on her forward mast 3/4 of the way up and an early style SC air search radar on top of the forward mast. This publication goes on to state that TBS tactical radio and IFF identification radar was "likely" fitted at this time. There are several close up photo's showing this refit in progress with the side plates of the 5 inch turrets removed and the gun mechanisms visible. (She was one of the first USN ships to recieve the new quad 40mm guns.) The drawings are by Alan B. Chesley and show both the outboard and overhead view of Helena as outfitted by Mare Island Navy Yard, June 1942. If you can't find a copy of this publication, contact me off list. Regards, Miles F.
