Subject: USS Helena June 1942 refit

 Hi Mike Blaser,

 The best published set of photo's and drawings of Helena's configuration in June 1942 that I know of can be found in the out of print Leeward publication titled Battle Damage No. 1 USS Helena CL-50.

 Her radar configuration for this refit included both Mk. 3 and MK. 4 fire control radars, SG surface search radar on a platform on her forward mast 3/4 of the way up and an early style SC air search radar on top of the forward mast. This publication goes on to state that TBS tactical radio and IFF identification radar was "likely" fitted at this time.

 There are several close up photo's showing this refit in progress with the side plates of the 5 inch turrets removed and the gun mechanisms visible. (She was one of the first USN ships to recieve the new quad 40mm guns.)

 The drawings are by Alan B. Chesley and show both the outboard and overhead view of Helena as outfitted by Mare Island Navy Yard, June 1942.

 This is a link to the real deal, SC1013, for sale on E-Bay. It was on last week and didn't get any offers, It's back now and can be your for a $1.00. A google search for SC 1013 produced an interesting history  and some period photos.

 Would be the talk of the marina to pull in on one of these!

 http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/length.

 With this website all you need do is enter the length in feet, inches or whatever and it will give you an instant, accurate conversion. It also has conversions for the different systems of time, volume, area, speed, temperature, energy, work, torque, and loads of other stuff. A really cool site.

 I believe it is only proper to warn you wannabe riders of the Model A Ford in Holbrook that the machine is equipped with several noise-making devices, one of which is a wolf whistle. The owner-driver sounds the wolf whistle long and loud whenever he passes a member of the female species, regardless of her age or attractiveness. I enjoyed my half-hour ride with him last August, and the many ladies who were targets of the wolf whistle during that ride seemed to enjoy the attention and the implied compliment it bestowed. Fortunately, I might add, the whistle was not used on male passersby. Some straight-arrows might think his actions place him in the category of being a "dirty old man" but the only time this epithet would be true of Franklyn P. Brown is when he works on that sturdy little Ford engine. The restoration is unique and excellent and future riders will be pleased no end.

And to show you what a nice guy he is, he is absorbing half of it, and taking the other half out of my sales commission. But don't worry, I'll take it off my income tax.

 Would you like a copy of the drawing? Drive it over the week-end and see what the missus thinks of it.  Don,

 The easiest way to convert is to remember 1" = 25.4mm. I model 1/96 scale, but build almost exclusively using metric. Once you get used to it you may find it is esier to mesure and mark off half a millimeter than some of the english mesurements.
