Built it in the 70s and would love to do so again and Christmas is the one time that I get to indulge in my old hobbies. I live just outside Toronto Ontario but the internet is a big world. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Norman Samish" Subject: USS Helena June 1942 refit >> The best published set of photo's and drawings of Helena's configuration in June 1942 that I know of can be found in the out of print Leeward publication titled Battle Damage No. 1 USS Helena CL-50. Her radar configuration for this refit included both Mk. 3 and MK. 4 fire control radars, SG surface search radar on a platform on her forward mast 3/4 of the way up and an early style SC air search radar on top of the forward mast. This publication goes on to state that TBS tactical radio and IFF identification radar was "likely" fitted at this time. There are several close up photo's showing this refit in progress with the side plates of the 5 inch turrets removed and the gun mechanisms visible. (She was one of the first USN ships to recieve the new quad 40mm guns.) The drawings are by Alan B. Chesley and show both the outboard and overhead view of Helena as outfitted by Mare Island Navy Yard, June 1942. << Miles F. McLaughlin I know a Navy veteran who was on the Helena when it was sunk. These photos you describe sound very interesting - do you know how I can get copies? Thanks, Norm Samish ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: JOHNEME Subject: Where do models go? Let me respectfully disagree. If after, I shove off for the last time or even before, my grandkids want to play with them, more power to them. I am under no illusion (or delusion) that I create the museum quality works of art that many of you create, but it gives me pleasure to build them. If it gives my offspring to take them to the nearest creek and shoot BBs (not battleships) at them, that's fine. My dad built some plank on frame wooden ship models before he died that I, and my brother and sister, still proudly display because they are works of art. His plastic models are not, and they now litter the bottom of creeks from Little Creek to Point Loma. Thanks in advance. feed ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Chuck Messer" Subject: Re: 1:1 Sub Chaser The recent thread on a 1:1 sub chaser reminded me of a Monty Python sketch, which takes place in a high school shop class. The instructor is looking over what the students have made for their latest project. He stops at one student, who's bench is empty. When asked where his project is, the student tells him it's outside. There, the instructor finds a large hull. "What is THAT?" "It's a model of a mine sweeper." "What scale?" "1:1." "THAT'S NOT A MODEL, IT'S A BLOODY MINESWEEPER!!!" :^)) Chuck Lakewood, Colorado, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: annobon4 Subject: Re: Where do models go! Hi Guys Where do your models go after you die? Well it depends your collection is built or unbuilt. Your family may attempt to find though a model club some one who has an interest and sell them to you. I've done that twice already. Also they could go to an NRG or IPMS chapter and be put up for auction or waffle. With the club getting half of the proceeds for auction and if raffled all of the proceeds going to the widow. Yes the grand kids could play with them and be destroyed shortly afterwards. I don't have grand kids but I do have nieces and newphews and give them my models to play with after I've had them for awhile. So "Uncle" Craig is remembered and they'll come over and cut my lawn when I'm 85. You might try depending on their condition donating them to museums, and public libraries. It certainly feels like a vulture helping to devour the prey when a modeler has died and his widow has his collection put for auction or raffle. I remember one guy's collection at the IPMS chapter I belong to. Everything ...all his tools ...books...decals and the kits. It was proabley worth tens of thousands of dollars. That collection had filled 6 tables each 10 ft or 3 meters long and the stack was 5ft or 1.75 meters high. Or they get throw out into the trash. Mispelkamp" Subject: Trade wanted I seem to acquired far more Heller 1/400 scale Arromaches and Illustrious class carriers than I need. I will be willing to trade both for a 1/400 scale Mogami or Tone class class IJN CA. Since my box will be bigger, we will pay our shipping costs. Let me know if I have to sweeten the deal any more - my mother-in-law might be available :))). Regards Peter K. H.
