OK Shipmates, believe it or not, I actually had a Trumpeter Hornet in my hands this w/e. Stevens International, the importer/distributor here in South Jersey, had one for his review and evaluation and courteously shared it with me. It is a beauty! I was impressed with the moldings, detaiul, options, etc. They are aboard ship coming via Panama and he expects to receive them by mid-Dec (hopefully even a week before). So pass the word to all hands. Gene ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SHIPMDLR Subject: Re: where do models go? My wife has standing orders that if anything happens to me that my entire collection of unbuilt models goes to my best friend who will take them to our model club and auction them off. The proceeds would then go to my wife. Any built models would be offered to our local museum with the deductible donation receipts also going to my wife. I asked him how the IRS handled model donations. I was under the impression that donated models could only be claimed on the IRS form (whatever # that is) for the actual purchase price of the materials (and the cost of the kit) it took to build the kit. He told me I was mistaken! He said you can legally deduct whatever fair price the model is worth. That price can include your labor to build it as well as the value of the kit when it was purchased, and the materials it took to build the kit. My first question to him was "who determines what your hourly wage is worth"? He said as long as it was a "reasonable" amount per hour (not $50.00 per hour for example) the IRS had no problem with it. The best thing to do was to get an appraisal of the value of the finished model. The appraisal would be accepted by the IRS if it was issued by someone with working knowledge of the value of model kits and the labor it takes to construct them. In short, that would be just about any of us. Since I am a professional builder, I asked him if my opinion would be accepted? He told me it certainly would, and that museums rely on people like us for such appraisals for their insurance policies. He also said he had never heard of the IRS questioning the value of any donated models they had ever received. That was very interesting to say the least. I'm not suggesting that anyone here take my word for this, but I would definitely suggest you speak to your local museum about this if you decide to donate anything. That donated model could be worth a LOT more than you think come April 15th. I also live in Franklin. I was beginning to believe that there were only two ship modelers in Tennessee. On another note. Is there a list mate living in or near Mannheim or Ludwigshafen, Germany? So has anyone thought about what happens to your models when we take that "final voyage." As a Social Worker in a retirement home I see death several times a week. Even though they have money, by the time they reach the end of their lives they have no homes (they can no longer take care of themselves), very few possessions and so on - everything we now take for granted Might want to take the time to think about where or what you want done with your model collection - last thing you want is some grandkid saying, "Oh mommy can I play with the pretty boats" - CRUNCH! This is my contribution to SMMLies being prepared << Michael, Your point is well taken; truly we strut and fret our hour upon the stage, and then are heard no more. One way to assure that our creations are cared for, or at least enjoyed, is to send them on their way before our own departure. I often build replicas which have significance for me personally or for someone I care about. I built a Desert Storm M1 Abrams which I gave to my mother as a reminder of her service with King Fahd in the 1990s, a USCG Taney which I gave to my father, a former crewman. A USS Massechusetts went to my brother in law as a memento of a fun trip our families made to the BB-59 museum. In each case the recipient was delighted with the gift and each model has become a unique part of the decor of their homes, not just another model stuck in a case in my hobby room. As for those unbuilt kits, I refuse to die until they are completed. At present count this should make my life expectancy about 150 years...
