As for their quality, I can only say that they are certainly not "blobs" and seem to resemble the aircraft they are supposed to depict, but I am not enough of an expert on "wingy things" to tell if they are right on the mark or not. Incidentally, the kit does not exactly represent the Glorious at the time of her loss; instead of a pole mast on her island as shown in the kit, at the time of her loss she had a tripod mast on the island with a homing beacon, like her sister the Courageous. This is well depicted in a plan of the Courageous in Burt's "British Battleships 1919-1939." Even buoy tenders and "40 footers" (if they still have 40s). << I believe that a cutter is 65' or longer. You are correct on the terminology of USCGC vs. USCG for those ships. I have three questions I believe SMML can answer. First, considering the new configuration etc., were they muzzle loaders or were they breech loaders? Second, how were they trained (aimed) individually (with block and tackle such as previous large naval guns?)? Third, how was recoil absorbed? Michael stated that as the flag "had been identified as the B&C flag" it dated the mug at between 1956 and 1962. Without having seen the mug I must respectfully disagree that the flag has been identified as that of the B&C Group. I have had an association with and an abiding interest in the Union-Castle Line going back over more than 50 years (my first voyage in a U-C ship was in "Stirling Castle" in 1947). To the best of my knowledge, the souvenir mugs, ashtrays, teaspoons, etc. sold on the Union-Castle ships always had the Union-Castle flag and not the B&C Group flag (although they may have had the B&C Group flag right at the end of the service, in the 1970s). Alan's mug dates sometime between 1938 and 1962. As an interesting sidenote, the sister ship to "Durban Castle", the "Pretoria Castle", was requisitioned by the Admiralty in November of 1939 and commissioned as an armed merchant cruiser, HMS "Pretoria Castle". In 1942/1943 she was purchased outright by the Admiralty and radically rebuilt as an aircraft carrier. After the war she was repurchased by the Union-Castle line, rebuilt into a passenger liner and renamed "Warwick Castle". Has any list member ever built a model of one of the carriers converted from a merchant ship? Regards to all and happy Thanksgiving to all American list members, Harold Lincoln ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "robert patmore Subject: USS Texas cage masts Michael Try and get a copy of Leeward Publications USS TEXAS. There several pictures of the ship with cage masts as well as a nice color side view in its 1918 fit. This decision was taken after to check the ship in Davenport. The cost of the ship is not clear yet ($2 to $10 million USD). The Chilean Navy are planning to spend USD $30 millions additionally to improve for SSM and helo facilities.
