The rest of the aircraft was standard camoflage brown and green. The same roundel was used on the on the upper port wing and underside of the starboard wing. This was, as you specify, a plain blue roundel with white bars edged with blue on either side. There were NO roundels on the starboard upper or port lowqer wings. Ransford "Taff" Rogers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Devin" Subject: Re: Hornet Airgroup at Midway >> So my question is at the commencement of the >Midway action, how many aircraft was Hornet actually carrying? and what >was the split of F4F/SBD/TBD << Colin, If no one responds on-list, let me know and I'll dig up the information. I know that "The First Team" has this listed, and I can find it in my copy at home. Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "John Harloe" Subject: Re: Monitor Guns There has been much discussion regarding the shutter configuration on the Monitor and the Passaic Class of Monitors. Old Steam Navy makes a model kit in 1/96th scale of the Passaic Class. We named our kit "Weehawken" honoring the most active Passaic Class Monitor. The kit allows a cut away of the turret and can be seen at www.cottage-industries.com Note the port stoppers used to protect the gun crews. Also note the XV Dalhgren inside. The instructions also come with the original blueprints of the turret's internals. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "William B. Smallshaw" Subject: Re: PT 109 documentary Regarding pwesty's inquiry, Well, there appears to be as much debate about how much of the PT 109 was located as there is about other events in the life of John Kennedy. Ballard believes, based on ground penetrating sonar that a large portion of the boat is under the sand. What is visible is a single torpedo tube, as well as the torpedo. Others argue that the sand pattern does not reflect one that would accumulate around a sunken object. The continued argument is that eye witness accounts of the hull movement after the ramming do not correspond with the Ballard location. The object that Ballard located is indeed a torpedo tube from an 80 foot ELCO PT, such as PT 109. At this stage you can pass your own judgment on Ballard's claim of finding the wreck. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Edd Pflum Subject: Re: More Aircraft Colours >> Because according to the Bible (The Monogram Guide) the scheme used (IIRC) Semi-Gloss Sea Blue on the upper wing surfaces, and Non-Specular Sea Blue on the upper fuselage above the Intermediate Blue. << Thanks John, I did not know that. I don't have the "bible". >> Best I can do, Mate--been WAAAAAAY too long since I built wingie thingies (and Barry, our paint man) has my copy of the Monogram Guide so I can't quote directly from that. << Actually, I haven't built any for a while either. The last three-color scheme I did was on some 1:144 Avengers destined for a Glynn Guest design CVE. Alas, the CVE never materialized, and the Avengers have disappeared. It has been discontinued, but according to their website some are still in stock. This kit represents the standard Liberty ship design. The Trumpeter kit you mention has only been announced for release in the next year or so. L'Arsenal has a kit that is due out soon. A few photos were recently posted on their site (www.larsenal.com). It appears to represent a later Liberty ship with features seen on the Jeremiah O'Brien, including the cut down gunnels aft and the helium storage locker under the after gun deck. << BlueJacket Shipcrafters (Blue Jacket Shipcrafters) still lists Liberty and Victory ship kits in their inventory. Unfortunately, they both are out of your price range. They are large scale (1/16) and around 30" long each. They are also wood kits with Britannia cast fittings and photo etch. The Victory ship runs $250.00 and the Victory ship runs $240.00. I wouldn't recommend them to inexperience modelers though. While they build into VERY impressive models, they require a lot of hand crafting. By that I mean that while BJS supplies you with everything you need to build the kit, lots of the parts must be made by hand. It's also helpful to have some experience working with wood kits. My first one turned out fine, so I'm sure an experienced modeler could handle the job. I have built both of these kits for clients in the past and I can tell you they are worth the price. Just be prepared to take lots of time building them. You can go crazy detailing models in that scale. Flagship Models Inc. Edward L. Beach Capt. Edward L. Beach, submariner and author, passed away at the age of 84. Capt. Beach wrote, among several titles, what was the classic US WWII submarine novel, "Run Silent, Run Deep", and the nonfictional "Around the World Submerged", in which he described the underwater voyage of the SSRN Triton. He also wrote a history of the US Navy, several other novels, and a memoir, "Salt and Steel". During WWII, Capt. Beach served as exec. officer on Trigger and Tirante, and as captain of Piper. After the war, he captained the Tang class Trigger II, served as Naval Aide to President Eisenhower, and captained the largest nuclear submarine of that time, Triton. On a personal note, one of my treasured possessions is a note he wrote to me a while back when I asked him some details about fleet boats. He was one of our finest Naval officers and truly a gentleman. For those of us who love reading Naval History, the world is a bit emptier today. Thanks, Felix Bustelo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Vess Irvine" Subject: Help Finding Liberty Ship Model Kit Halinski is planning a 1/200th Liberty Ship in the very near future. If past efforts are a guide, this model will be just stunning, and quite reasonably priced, well within your budget. See: http://www.halinski.com.pl/ang/indexgb.html for a nice picture of the artist cover drawing. You also get a Polish destroyer thrown in for free. Wilhelmshaven has had a nice Liberty ship in their catalog for some decades now. It is waterline, whereas the Halinski is probably to be full hull. The W. kit is 1/250th scale. It has English instructions. You can buy the Wilhelmshaven kit for $25 at: http://amos.catalogcity.com/cc.class/cc?main=catalog&act=d%2C23280&pcd=948468&ccsyn=1 My guess, the Halinski kit will retail around $16.00, and it will knock your socks off. If you can wait a month or two, that is the one to buy. Both are of the USS J. O'Brian. Either way, these models are so inexpensive, that you might just as well order them sight unseen and be surprised, when they arrive, at how nice they are. Heck, buy them both. They will rival any resin or plastic kit in detail and in "wow" factor. True enough, one of our model geniuses can construct an unbelievably good resin or plastic model. But us hackers need all the help we can get. The "paint" jobs on the Halinski models are so nice and historically accurate (no need for you to paint, other then touch up) that all we hackers have to do is assemble the pieces. Author quoted as Gordon Williamson who has written a number of other books on German WWII Naval subjects. Any information as to new content and illustration would be most interesting. Many thanks Dan Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: HAZEGRAYADM Subject: Re: D Garret & Liberty ship Dave: Trumpeter has only "Announced" the eventual offering of the Liberty ship in 1/350 scale. It is a way off: perhaps a year, so don't count on anything immediate at the level you are hoping for. Bert McDowell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Re: OFFICIAL USCG Nomenclature Hi SMMLies, Just ask Mike Maynard what cutter he got his buff from or what desk it came out from under at Cape Cod. Remember SMMLies, All CG stations get their own paint from some paint store or local supply. They never all come from a mystical place somewhere hidden deep in the desert in the middle of Bum----Egypt. So my point is the color WILL be different from station to station. Example : New London, CT has two stations about two miles apart. I have some buff from each one. So now I also have two different shades of buff and their not that close to each other in shade! So there you have it. But listen to "Mike the Guru of the White Boat and CG sea stories Maynard", I do, he's got his s--t in one sock.
