Ouch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: WRPRESSINC Subject: Re: Accuracy of Ship Plans I agree with Mr Przezdziecki generally about plans that match up with kits and vice versa. Could the gentleman tell us if he has looked at the official plans for any of those vessels listed? I know that the Russian archives are essentially open for the period in question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "robert patmore" Subject: find a book re lamkeel I have had excellent results on book searches by going to www.bookfinder.com. bob patmore ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Doug Marrel" Subject: Historical note re: 1st shot in WWII The Japanese take the prize anyway on the subject. Everyone except for a few seem to have forgotten poor old Panay, recently the subject of a kit release, and it was definitely shot first. Wasn't an accident either, despite claims at the time to the contrary. Typical ignorance of history by any American educational group. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Re: Accuracy of condemnation of ships plans Jon Warneke wrote: >> What exactly are your sources for these statements? Saying that things are "pure fantasy" without providing any relevant sources, although par for the course, is suspect. I would hope these judgements are made from primary sources (actual builders plans, original photographs, etc) rather than from tertiary sources (magazine articles, word of mouth, photocopied pictures). Just like to know... << Well Jon, it was a general answer to a general post but, unlike some of the resin producer I could mention, I am always realying on more than just one source: my comments about "Borodino" sisters were based upon builders drawings and original photographs published in R.M. Mielnikov's "Battleships of Borodino class", V.V. Arbuzov's "Borodino class armoured ships" and author drawings in D.G. Malkov's "Handbook of naval warfare" vol.1; "Tsesarevitch" on builders drawings and photographs in R.M. Malenkov's "Tsesarevitch" vol.1, Gangut vol.19 and Malkov's "Handbook" vol.1; "Peresviet" sisters were based upon Morskaja Kollekcija 1/1998 ("Battleships of Peresviet class"), the most accurate to this date (IMO) plans of Oslabia published in vol.2 (1992) of "Lada" magazine and Malkov's "Handbook" vol.5; "Navarin" -original drawings and photographs in V.V Arbuzov "Battleship "Navarin"" and Gangut vol.4; "Imp.Aleksander II" -original drawings and photographs in V.V. Arbuzov's "Battleship "Imp.Aleksander II""; "Poltava" sisters -original drawings published in the series "Warships of the World" by "Korabli i srazenija", St.Petersburgh 2001, drawings and photographs from "Battleships of "Poltava" class" published by Technika Maladiozy in 1993 and Malkov's "Handbook" vol.5. Those are just primary sources, there are many more photographs and drawings from various sources which I use for cross-reference purposes. Now Jon, after all that, would you be kind enough to tell me what were your primary sources for ISW's "Brooklyn"??? Since main deck layout does not tally with the original builders drawings held in US National Archives and published in Warship vol.XVI I am kind of curious.... Don Macdonald THAT OLD PORTLAND RUSTBUCKET ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Burl Burlingame Subject: Re: Japanese Midget subs at Pearl Harbor >> Thank You for the Notice on this show, I look forward to seeing it. I just hope they do not persue the abusrdity of one particular quote: "This discovery is the first physical evidence to back up what numerous historians have long believed-America fired first in the War with Japan." Do these "Historians" like to debate known facts???? There is no question the USS Ward fired upon the Midget sub before the Declared opening of << As one of the historians -- or "historians" -- interviewed on the show, I didn't say such a thing. My point of view is that the midget sub/ Ward encounter was the opening round of the Pacific War, and the Americans won that first encounter. These "first shots" have the same emotional echoes as the shots traded at Lexington and Concord. But actually, it was the American Congress in 1945 that raised the question that the US provoked the war by firing first. The query was treated then as a joke, and should still be. Pics include shots of her conversion, the action with the German ships Munchen and Hermonthis, POW's and a few sundry shots like the KGV, and an unknown Porter Class Destroyer. SMMLies assistance in fixing the HMS Vindex page was very much appreciated.
