Does anyone know the scale of these ships or have any other information relating to them? There doesn't seem to be any information on them in the list of SHIP KIT REVIEWS Thanks. Martin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: MGFoster Subject: Catapult aircraft retrieval Catapult aircraft were retrieved by their ships using a recovery float mat that was towed in the lee of the ship. The a/c would "drive" onto the mat and the mat and a/c would be towed into range of the ship's crane. I want to know where the line for the float mat was secured to the ship. Was it trailed from a crane, tied to a bitt, held by personnel? Here is a picture of an SOC being retrieved in 1942, that shows the recovery float mat: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/g20000/g21927.jpg Here are some other pictures of observation float planes: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/ac-usn22/s-types/soc-r.htm Thanks, MGFoster:::mgf Oakland, CA (USA) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Daniel Bauer" Subject: Re: Painting the Tirpitz Hello Again, When painting any scheme I paint each subsection. The question of uniformity is a concern. On real ships the painting of different sections will always show some differences in shade. If you look at some good clear pictures of any warship you will find this to be true. I believe this will make a model come alive. I was on the the New Jersey for 18 months. The paint was never uniform. It varied from can to can. But make the differnences slight. That is the trick. The eye will catch the differences. I am guilty of it as well, there are too many "pretty" warships models out there. In real live, out on the sea there is no such thing! Happy Modeling, Regards Dan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: M.C. Linson Subject: Nichimo 1/200th scale submarine The U-Boat kit is very well done but, research shows that portions of the deck detail are wrong. See the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry U-505 on-line exhibit. It's a type IXC, which is supposed to be represented by the model. Then check period photos in the books available. Comparing these with the actual model will show the differences. The type IXC was produced in several variations but, parts of Nichimo's molded in detail isn't supported by the evidence. Now for the fun part. Do you try to correct it or deal with it as-is? As my copy isn't built yet there is a lot of wavering on which way to go. If there is a minimal way to 'fudge' it then that will probably be the choice. That's one interesting part of a hobby- you get to choose... Hope this helps, Mike Loveland, CO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: Trumpeter Hornet - anyone in Canberra got one? Have just seen the large photos of the kit posted on hyperscale and wondered if anyone in Canberra had one, or was about to get one. I'd really like to have a close look at the hull ala Keith Bender's comments, as I have both plans for CV-5 and a Revell Yorktown for comparison. regards Stephen Allen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: annobon4 Subject: Re: HMS Manchester Hi Max Try contacting AAA Hobbies at White Horse Pike &W arrick road in Magnolia NJ 08049 at 856-435-1188 and they have mail order. Mosher >> Submarine Owned by Kaliningrad's World Ocean Museum Admitted to Historical Ships' Association KALININGRAD, December 18. The B-413 submarine owned by the World Ocean Museum in Kaliningrad has been admitted to the Association of Historical Ships. A certificate of admission to 'the third largest fleet of the world' was delivered to Kaliningrad by Alexander Vershbow, the US Ambassador to Russia. The Association of Historical Ships was founded in 1966. Its primary objective is the preservation of outstanding historical ships and the dissemination of information among those interested in the rich naval heritage of the sea nations. At this time, the association includes 90 ships from all over the world. Until now, Russia was represented by the Aurora cruiser and the Krasin icebreaker. The B-413 submarine was put to its permanent mooring at the World Ocean Museum's pier in 2001. She is the only in Russia post-war museum ship. It houses a permanent exhibition entitled 'The History of Russia's Navy'. The submarine was built in 1968 and was a part first of the Northern, then Baltic fleets. << ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Phil Collins" Subject: More about the Andrea U boat Just a bit more about the Andrea Miniatures U boat, for those interested. Reading through article again I noticed that their is a book available about the diorama build. This is called 'Das Boot', and is (was?) available through Andrea Press. Sorry, but I didn't reread until after I sent the first mail. Could anyone recommend a good starting point. I have recently bought the Airfix Belfast. Would this work out to complicated for my first time. I was thinking of using the WEM kit. I would be grateful for any advice and suggestions. Thanks.
