And to all, peace on earth, and good will toward all. Cheers, Dave, Caroline, John, Peter, Barry, Jackie, Rumbly, and Spot The WEM Crew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Gerald McKinney Subject: Re: Bob Healy and B-47s If I recall correctly, the Canadians used a B-47 as an engine test bed for the proposed engine (Orenda?) for the unfortunately cancelled Avro Arrow. Sure looked weird hanging off the starboard fuselage side. Jerry McKinney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Ed Valerio" Subject: Re: Message from W R PRESS Dear Shane, I have spoken to W R PRESS and they tell me that they never send attachments. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: URUDOFSKY Subject: Re: USS NJ - Modernized I took about 40 photos of the USS New Jersey in October 2002. The file is about 3 MB. If your e mail can't handle it, I will gladly send a free CD to anyone, if you reimburse me for the postage. Ulrich Rudofsky ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Silas Wellington" Subject: Re: USS NJ-Modernized >> I am in process of preparing to build the Tamiya 1/350 USS New Jersey as she was during the mid to late 80's early 90's. Any suggestions on good ref material, decking and overall layout would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone have any experience in replacing molded in details with aftermarket parts and inlaying wood decking representing the teak which was used? Thanks...... << Bob few yrs ago I buildt the Iowa 350" from revell I used Gold metal PE on it and she turned out really good, the GM PE went smooth for my first time ever trying it although I would sugest buying Mr Perrys book on PE also......it sure helped me.....Good Luck !!!! Si Wellington ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: E-Bay To: Paul Goltz Yes, please do enlighten us about E-Bay, this will be especially welcomed by we who are not computer-challenged, but are indeed computer-dared. And remember, KISS (Keep It Simple Sir). Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Naval B-47 >> The thing that made it memorable for me was watching it take off. So help me it used every linear inch of that huge runway to get airborne and even then its rate of climb was no better than a Cessna 150. I really worried for those guys. << The B-47 was one beautiful plane. Photos of her fuselage JATO rockets smoke trail during take off adds to that impression and is consistent with the statement above. Yet I recall reading Chuck Yeager's comment in his autobiography that the B-47 was so streamlined and fighter-like that it would float forever over the runway when he tried to land the bomber. That gives a contradictory picture? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: David Ian Moore Subject: Re: U.S. Navy B-47's Canada used a B-47 as a test bed for the Orenda engines used for the Arrow and CF 100. The test engine was affixed below te starboard tailplane Ian ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: SHIPMDLR Subject: Re: Hornet's Flight Deck Color Can't solve the problem mixing paints for the Hornet's deck, but you can get accurate color chips from Snyder and Short as well as The Floating Dry-dock. The FDD's chips are much cheaper and just as accurate. However, they are on a much smaller card. They'll do the job though. I plan on doing a lot of painting on my Hornet deck to represent the wood as weathered. Bert McDonnell did an excellent article in the Journal a while back on weathering flight decks. Now I'll get a chance to try that out. Rusty White IPMS/USA #20181 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: SHIPMDLR Subject: Re: Funny web site >> Today I received an email from "WRPRESSINC" entitled "A funny website" with an attachment. I immediately deleted it as I've never before received email from WR Press and sending a funny website seemed a bit out of character as an inaugerial communication. I suspect a virus and the only connection I can think of that we might have would be through the SMML. Has anyone else recived this? Have I missed a really funny website? << I think you're correct assuming this is a virus ploy. I opened an email from someone I knew that had the heading "congratulations." I had a bad feeling about it but I opened it anyway and sure enough, it contained a Klez virus. Fortunately Norton picked it up and sent it to the happy hunting ground (recycle bin) where I deleted it. I sent an email to everyone on my mailing list cautioning them about the email. I was afraid it may have been sent to everyone on my list. BEWARE! Rusty White IPMS/USA #20181 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Christopher Crofoot Subject: Re: EB-47E...Hornet... From: "Robert Healy" >> My Trivia:Can you name the only foreign operator(for you US types) of the B-47 and what it was used for? To All: Have a safe and happy holiday... hopefully your presents will include alot of plastic and glue and books and goodies. << It was actually an NB-47. The navy had them for evaluation purposes. The foreign operator of the B-47 were those insidious Canadians. They had one on hand to test the Orenda Iroqouis Jet engine that was going to be used in the Avro CF-105 Arrow. The Canadians scabbbed it on to the right hand side of the bomber aft and redesignated it the CL-52. You can see a pic of it at: http://www.b-47.com/history/ch27/b-47ch27.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Allan Wotherspoon" Subject: Re: EB-47E...Hornet... >> My Trivia:Can you name the only foreign operator(for you US types) of the B-47 and what it was used for? << Canada. It was used to test the Iriquois jet engine intended for the Avro Arrow. Allan J. Wotherspoon Burnaby, B.C. CANADA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Ted Johnston Subject: Foreign Operated B47 & Next Years Xmas List >> My Trivia:Can you name the only foreign operator(for you US types) of the B-47 and what it was used for? << Not Foreign to us Canadians......Canada had one that I believe was used as an engine Test Bed during the Avro Arrow Program. This Christmas my Hornet is on it's way.....next Christmas I would like to see in 1/350th scale plastic injection molded, a Queen Elizabeth Class Battleship (Warspite), any RN Cruiser, a Tribal Class Destroyer, and any RN Fleet Carrier from WW2. Not Asking much, but yes I do believe in Santa Claus! Best of the Season to you All! Ted Johnston Another one of those Canucks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Hank Lapa" Subject: Foreign B-47 Canada operated one as an engine testbed associated with the ill-fated Arrow aircraft. BTW, I think the last B-47 flight was about 8-10 years ago . . . to the museum of Flight on Seattle from desert storage. Hank ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "James Hathaway" Subject: U.S. Navy B-47s Merry Christmas, all The U.S. Navy also bailed one of their B-47s as an engine test bed. I remember during the Lockheed S-3 program one of them carried a prototype engine on the right wing for airborne tests. I think there may be a photo in the Lindsay Peacock book on the B-47. Jim Hathaway ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: PT-190 Ed Yep, PT-190 was a retrofitted tube-equipped boat and would most likely have retained some or even all of the earlier mounting pads and training gear, so the Revell kit is okay in this regard (although the planked deck is not okay for this particular unit). Where it errs is in representing the roll-off racks as being separate single arms mounted at the extremities of the Mk 13 torpedoes and linked by a rod plugging into each of the previous tube mounts. Nice try by Revell to get two versions out of one kit though. It would be lovely to have some aftermarket goodies for the Revell kit, at minimum the roll-off racks and decent alternative armament - the 37mm, a 40mm and decent 0.50s on the proper PT mounts. I know you can convert/scratchbuild all of this - have done so myself - but it would be sooo much easier with a bit of resin and etch. As for a 77 foot Elco or a Higgins, I'll go on dreaming... regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Michael Kear" Subject: Greetings! This just came in on another list I belong to, and thought it would be appropriate here too. >> I wanted to send out some sort of holiday greeting but it is so difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. I met with my attorney, and on his advice I want to say to all of you: Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive gender neutral, celebration of the solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. We also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2003, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual preference of the wishee. By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher. << Cheers, Mike Kear Windsor, NSW, Australia Webmaster, Model Warship 72 www.modelwarship.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
