See you all in 2003 (by Aussie time at least ;-) ) Shane & Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: ANDYCPORETSNIPE Subject: LSD- LANDING SHIP DOCK DOES ANY ONE KNOW OF A MODEL OF A 'THOMASTON CLASS' LSD COULD BE NO. 28-29-30-31-32-33-34-35 18" TO 20" LONG. Andersen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: ED LARYEH Subject: deck colors Long ago (1960's) when I was painting my RN WHITBY and LEANDER class models I visited a ship of that type in port and "liberated" (with the help of the First Lieutenant) two small jars of the paint actually in use on the hull and deck. I used the paint (after thinning it EXTENSIVELY) on my models. For any SMMLies who might be interested in that period, the deck green is a fine match for the "late war Semtex" on WEMs color chip chart, and the hull is nearly MS4A, but semi=gloss (obviously for durability since flat paints do not wear well in the demanding environment of salt spray). As I recall, all the decks were green except the helicopter platform which was a medium/dark grey with white markings. Bob, Here is a link to a small "how to" on planking the New Jersey. If you have any further questions on the technique, just let me know. Hope this helps. http://pub143.ezboard.com/fmodelfleetfrm20.showMessage?topicID=14.topic Best regards, Dan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Glenn and Kelly Neklason" Subject: Hull Red Hi All, Can someone refresh my fading memory? I need USN hull red and can't remember if there's a suitable red out there or, if not, the "recipe" for making it. Thanks & Happy New Year! Are these the same? << Craig, These paints have actually been around for several years. I've been using them almost exclusively, and they work well. They don't adhere quite as well as solvent based paints, but if you're careful with your masking, it isn't an issue. I have noticed that the colors tend to vary a bit from bottle to bottle as far as matching each other in shade, so be sure to check that, but otherwise I really like them. As far as I know, they have no affiliation with WEM. Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Dafuelmann Subject: Making Wood Decks Hi Bob, On making wood decks, many years ago (perhaps 15 or so) Fine Scale Modeler had an article on scratchbuilding some 1/700 Itialian warships. The decks were done by first using a very sharp plane to make 1/32" thick basswood shavings. One side of each shaving was colored black with a felt tip marker, then several strips were glued together and thin layers were cut off for deck planking. These chunks of decking were then glued on to the deck and sanded down till all was smooth & flush. It looked like a lot of work, but the results were very impressive!! I believe the usual planking width for ships was about 5 or 5 1/2". On Chains, Floating DryDock (there is a link at steelnavy.com) sells brass anchor chain, but I don't know if they sell a small enough version for 1/350. They also sell 40 link to the inch brass chain, which is the smallest actual chain I've seen offered anywhere. White Ensign and others sell photo etch anchor chain, you could check there too HTH David ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Kurt Van Dahm Subject: Badger Marine Paints >> I recently picked up a flyer from Badger Air Brush Co.and they have come out with a new line of Marine paints which seems to similiar by the paint colors name to Synder and Shorts line from WEM. Are these the same? << Craig: No, the Badger Modelflex Marine Paints are not the same as the WEM paints by S&S. The Badger Modelflex Marine Paints were developed (by me) for Badger in early 1999 shortly after the Floquil Marine Paints were canceled by Testor's as new owners of the Floquil paints. The Modelflex paints are an acrylic latex based formula that is very popular with the RR modelers and the same formula has been used for the marine paint line. I relied on S&S's color chips for (some)color matching. Hope this helps. Take care, Kurt Van Dahm Westmont, IL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: EDWARD GRUNE Subject: Hornet to Enterprise conversion set David in Dixie wrote >> Suggestions please on converting the island to the ENTERPRISE. << James Corley, a member of this list and master mold maker extraordenaire has done most of the heavy lifting for you. He has an island conversion kit in the works that will convert the Hornet to either the Enterprise or the Yorktown. James had it all completed at Thanksgiving and was waiting to get the Hornet kit in his hands to check and adjust fit. Then the master will be shipped off to the casters. James will probably chime in here as to when he is expecting the conversion set to be available and the MSRP, but look for it soon. Ed Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: Scanning plans Has anyone ever used one of those handheld scanners to do "swipes" of large scale ship plans and then combine them in the computer? I have several plan sets in 1/192, 1/196, etc. that I want to reduce to 1/350th scale, and would MUCH rather have them scanned once and then be able to manipulate the file in PhotoShop or Corel Draw to the scales I want and print them. I do a lot of PhotoShop work for my photography and web design, so this seems like an option with less of a learning curve; want hull stations? Copy them into a new file and just print that section. Heck, those hand scanners are cheap and I might pick one up just to experiment. Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Hank Christen" Subject: modern USN colors There's always a lot of discussion and color charts relating to WW II color schemes, but what about the modern Navy? Does anyone have a good source for colors (hull, deck, superstructure, etc) for the "fig sevens" (FFG-7 Frigates) and the CG 47's (Ticonderoga class cruisers)? Hank Christen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Sea Classics Help!! In my process of searching for information about the W W 1 110 Ft. wooden-hulled submarine chaser I was referred to a back issue of Sea Classics magazine. I was told that the May 1989 (Volume 22, No. 5) had an article about these vessels. Not having such an entity, I requested it from my local town library, I have been told by my local interlibrary loan system that they have located two copies, both are in out of state libraries, and due to the inherent physical vulnerability of magazines the libraries understandably do not let them go out on loan. But the libraries offered to send me a Xerox copy of the article, if I can supply the title of the article and the author. Well, O.K., except I do not know the title or author. I made a special trip to Boston, to the Boston Public Library, the regional (Nova Albion) equivalent of the Library of Congress for the sole purpose of getting the title and author to give to the local librarian. Then I got a real shocker. The BPL doesn't have Sea Classics magazine!!!! That's right, unbelievable as it sounds, the BPL, the BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY, DOESN'T HAVE SEA CLASSICS MAGAZINE !!!!!!!!!!!! They have parchment documents dating back to the mid 1600s, but no Sea Classics. Hoo-Boy!!! I haven't been so disappointed since I first found out there was no Santa Clause. Therefore I once again turn to SMML. It will be greatly appreciated if someone in SMML will please look in his stack of back issues Sea Classics, for the May 1989 (Volume 22, No. 5) and advise me if there is indeed an article on WW 1 sub chasers therein, and if so, provide me with the title and author. Many thanks. Try Gold Medal Models - Loren Perry makes decal sheets with names and numbers in several scales. Also try your local train hobby shop - railroad decals come in all sorts of fonts, sizes and colors.
