NEED FOR A SHIP REUNION THIS JUNE << Harry, As far As I know there are no models available of the THOMASTON Class. Lindberg released a kit (long out of production) of the ASHLAND Class (which I believe is approximately 1/300 scale, I think, about 20") and Scale Shipyard has a hull for the WHIDBEY ISLAND Class (1/96 scale - 76" long!). Contact me off list if you'd like more info, I may be able to put my hands on a Lindberg kit. A real find, for those who like nautical aircraft. Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Topy Yester" Subject: SBN & Hornet's Deck James and all, I also read that there were SBNs as training aircraft on Yorktown, but could never verify it, even veterans had no reminiscences on that. On Hornet Deck: Eyewitness says, that there were linoleum floor layed on most used walkways to avoid attrition. Unfortunately I do not know exact position. The deck color was very weathered and faded to my best knowledge. If somebody wants to model personnel on the deck: the hats of the crew were dyed blue, because it was too conspicuous in white. best regards and Happy New Year to all Zsolt from Hungary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: wem Subject: Re: Paints & Colors >> For any SMMLies who might be interested in that period, the deck green is a fine match for the "late war Semtex" on WEMs color chip chart, and the hull is nearly MS4A << We have samples in hand for both that Deck Green and RAN Storm Grey, but haven't brought them into production since there don't seem to be that many models out there that require them. Any thoughts on this from the SMMLie community?? >> Can someone refresh my fading memory? I need USN hull red and can't remember if there's a suitable red out there or, if not, the "recipe" for making it. << If you're referring to modern USN Antifouling Red, it's already available in WEM Colourcoats: M06. If you're referring to the WW2 Norfolk 65-A Antifouling Red, that's available too: US14. >> Does anyone have a good source for colors (hull, deck, superstructure, etc) for the "fig sevens" (FFG-7 Frigates) and the CG 47's (Ticonderoga class cruisers)? << Everything you need is available in WEM Colourcoats: Modern USN Haze Gray, M03; Modern USN Deck Gray, M04; Modern USN Flight Deck Gray, M05; Modern USN Antifouling Red, M06; and for the helos: Light Ghost Gray, ACUS03 Dark Ghost Gray, ACUS04 And no, Badger paints have no affiliation with WEM or S&S. Jim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Edd Pflum Subject: Re: Sea Classics Franklyn, I don't have the issue you are looking for, but Sea Classics May 1970 (Vol. 3 No. 3) Pg. 36 has an article entitled "Sea Sprite Sub Chaser" by Konrad F. Schreier, Jr., which you may find interesting. Edd ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Edd Pflum Subject: Re: Scanning plans >> Has anyone ever used one of those handheld scanners to do "swipes" of large scale ship plans and then combine them in the computer? I have several plan sets in 1/192, 1/196, etc. that I want to reduce to 1/350th scale, and would MUCH rather have them scanned once and then be able to manipulate the file in PhotoShop or Corel Draw to the scales I want and print them. I do a lot of PhotoShop work for my photography and web design, so this seems like an option with less of a learning curve; want hull stations? Copy them into a new file and just print that section. Heck, those hand scanners are cheap and I might pick one up just to experiment. << Devin, It's been a while since I saw a review of hand scanners, so things may have improved, but I do not think this is a plan. AFAIR, the hand scanners produced unpredictable results depending on the speed, angle and exact path of the scan. Stitching these together to get a complete plan would be a chore, if possible at all. They are intended for more of a "notepad" type of usage where accuracy is not critical. Kinkos may be able to digitize your plans (and certainly could reduce them to whatever scale desired.) If you decide to plunge ahead and experiment, I would be interested to hear of your results. Edd ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Preston L Hassler Subject: Request for Sea Classics's Subchaser The subchaser article, "Wooden Wonders of the Splinter Fleet: Subchasers", is on pages 66 thru 70, author- Harry C Armstrong. The first two pages are black words on a medium dark blue picture which might affect how a copy comes out. Fortunately there isn't very much of the article on these two pages, only ten lines. I'll be glad to try to get it copied for you if you want. Skip Hassler ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Bbullock903 Subject: hornet painting questions As I am starting to piece together my Trumpeter USS Hornet, a couple of questions come to mind regarding painting: 1. What color should the undersides of the catwalks and the flight deck be? 2. As I plan to open some of the hanger doors, what would the color scheme of the inside of the hanger deck be? 3. Would there be a difference in the color of the deck from inside the hanger to outside? Thanks in advance for the help! Dave Fisher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: chief5777 Subject: WWll ship model I am trying to find a model of my ship, it is called a DIXIE CLASS, DESTROYER TENDER. There were a lot of ships that used that hull design, ie hospital ships, sub tenders, repair ships. I was on the USS Yosemite AD-19. I seem to remember that at one time I had seen such a plastic kit. I hope that I was not dreaming. I am the president of the Yosemite Association, and would like to build one and take it to our next reunion, The dixie class hull was started just after the start of ww2, I would appreciate any help in obtaining model Thanks Mike Williams, Pres. Hi I was just wondering if anybody has heard anything new about the finding of Hms Ark Royal? Main what kinda of shape she is in and how she is sitting on the sea floor? Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "James Hathaway" Subject: Navy B-47 As far as I can remember, the Navy B-47 used as a test bed was natural metal with U.S. Navy in place of U.S. Airforce on the nose. I assume there was also a bureau number on the tail- The Lindsay Peacock book on the B-47 has a photo, the Detail and Scale might also.
