I don't think Seals Models has their own website. I thought Interallied is the company's name while Seals Models is a name of their brands (like Skywave of Pit-Road). But now I am getting unsure of it since the Mikasa box I have says Seals Models as the company's name. But I still think Seals Models and Interallied should be associated with each other in some way or another. Anyway, I hope Seals Models will open their own website pretty soon. (By the way, I e-mailed (in Japanese) Interallied about a month ago, asking why Seals Models's kits are not listed but they didn't respond...) Regards, Masashi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: George Colleen Hargreaves Subject: Drawings for H.M.S. Bristol 1916 Hi All, With so many articles on scratch building I thought I might give it a try. I would like to scratch build HMS Bristol about 1916 in 1/700 scale. Can anyone tell me if drawings exist and how I may get a set? Cheers, George ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: M.C. Linson Subject: Re: Aircraft Canopies=> Re: 1/285th micro-armor Ned Barnett wrote: >> I used 1/285th armor (metal) from some wargaming kind of thing. << What Ned is referring to is GHQ's or CinC/Pfc's 1/285th scale micro-armor or 1/300th scale miniatures from Heroics & Ros, Navwar, Scotia, or Skytrex. All are made of a lead-tin alloy. The first two companies are in the U.S. and are of high to outstanding quality. GHQ (www.ghqmodels.com) has higher detail and are slightly larger than CinC/Pfc. GHQ's price averages $9.00 per pack of 5 vehicles, CinC/Pfc is 30% to 50% cheaper depending on the article (CinC/Pfc is NOT on the internet). -BE WARNED- GHQ's customer service is lousy and getting something straightened out by them is akin to pulling eye teeth... It would be better to deal with a local or trusted retailer. GHQ's crew served weapons have the crew molded around the weapon & are molded into driver/crew compartments; CinC/Pfc leaves off such detail. Also GHQ's gun barrels & muzzles tend to be thick & exaggerated. CinC/Pfc's are more true to scale. Thus, some of CinC/Pfc's weapons/items, such as the Flakvierling (quad 20mm guns), are better suited for adapting to a 1/250th to 1/300th (?1/350th?) scale ship model. The 1/300th scale manufacturer's quality is notably inferior and run from £.20 to £1.50 per item. -Heroics&Ros/Navwar-www.navwar.freeserve.co.uk -Scotia- www.scotiagrendel.com -Skytrex- www.skytrex.com General point- I have around 4,300 miniatures from the above companies and have been "wargaming" & collecting for 25+ years. Anyone want to know about American Armored Divisions, German 'elite' Panzer Divisions, or Russian Guards Tank Corps? :) How about esoteric viewpoints on WWII history? :) Any interest for prime beach-front property around Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah? :-) :-) Hope this info helps, Mike Loveland, CO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "James M. Pasquill, II" Subject: Shell Welder Info I've not seen mention of it this time around.. don't forget the excellent PE set for the Shell Welder. Jim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: James Corley Subject: Re: Re: US Carrier flight decks post-war - tan/brown decks? >> Monogamy for the deck it self. << Little Freudian slip there?! Getting married and/or divorced soon? Craig, I believe you meant to say Mahogany!! And the deck markings were insignia yellow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "John Clements" Subject: HMS York 1941 colours I have just bought the Samek kit of HMS York, and have been unable to find any colour references for the two-tone scheme shown in the instructions, and in contemporary photographs which, being monochrome, show the usual variety of shades depending on the light. My starting guess would be that the light shade is AP507C, but am less sure whether the darker shade is A or B. Can anyone help with a reference, please? And a happy new year to all fellow SMMLies, John Clements ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Hank Christen" Subject: Modern steel Navy colors I got a partial answer to my color question for modern guided missile ships, but need more info. What surfaces or structures are painted dark ghost gray, light ghost gray, and haze gray? Thanks! Hank Christen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: rdauteuil Subject: Shipboard vermin >> As for other shipboard vermin, well, we didn't have a Marine detachment aboard. ;^) (Ducking for cover!) << John, Remember, the Navy never had a ship stolen from them while the US Marines were guarding it! JUST KIDDING!!! Actually I have a trememdous amount of respect and admiration for the US Marine Corps. Rod ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: rdauteuil Subject: Wood deck on CVN65 >> Also I believe Enterprise CVN-65 was built with a wood deck. I have a book showing returning from Vietnam with a exposed deck with little paint after alot of flight operations. << You sure about that? I find it hard to believe that would use wood on this supercarrier of the future. By that time the Forrestals were already in service and they had steel (or maybe aluminum???) decks. Rod ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: GtLakesMem Subject: Fllet Colors I am writing for a friend, who is building a 6 foot model of the EDMUND FITZGERALD, which sank on November 10, 1975. There are two questions. 1) He needs the paint descriptions (Model Paint Manufacturers and No.) for the Hull, Spar Deck. Forward House Decks, After Decks, Lifeboats, Stack Colors, Boot Strap, Cabin Colors, etc. 2) The vessel was converted from coal-fired boilers to oil-fired boilers. The coal was loaded through a hatch on top of the after cabins. How was this area changed when the fuel conversion took place? Any help and assistance will be greatly appreciated. Armor steel flight deck, overpainted with non-skid & deck markings. Cheers, John Snyder USS BAINBRIDGE (DLGN-25), 1966-70, regular escort for CVAN-65 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: JFR1945 Subject: Re: US Carrier flight decks post-war - tan/brown decks? >> Also I believe Enterprise CVN-65 was built with a wood deck. The picture you have must show some temporary repair. John Reeder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Devin" Subject: Plan Scanning Saga Continues... Well, I took the advice and went to the Kinko's here in midtown Manhattan (53rd and Broadway). They showed me this nice large format scanner (looks a lot like a line plotter printer), and said they could easily scan my plans, convert them to a JPEG or whatever format I wanted, and then burn them to CD for me... FOR $29 A SHEET! Holy crap, the whole set of Yorktown plans (6 sheets) from Taubman was only $45! Guess I'm back to the section scanning using my flatbed idea. Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Devin" Subject: A history question Question: After the Battle of the Coral Sea, when the USS Yorktown was running back to Pearl Harbor for her Midway repairs, does anyone happen to know of any instances of her refueling her DD's or cruisers in her screen? I know she was leaking fuel herself, but with the Neosho gone, I'm assuming some unorthodox things had to be done. Thanks, Devin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: NAVYDAZE Subject: Re: Ship's Names Actually during WWII many U.S. ships were sponsered by citizens of US cities for some of the cruisers built and raised the money to build them - there may have by other types also - not sure on that. Mike NAVYDAZE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: URUDOFSKY Subject: Re: cockroaches Cockroaches are very interesting creatures having evolved more than 400 million years ago and having undergone very little in the way of further evolution, although there are 4000-7000 species! In this day and age they are the hallmark of a sloppy ship and poor housekeeping practices; but as far as I know, they are not specific vectors of any human disease per se; however, they could carry some deadly germs on their little paws from a dead rat to the mess hall. It is disconcerting to walk down a dark hall with crunchiness under foot! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: Re: CVAN 65 - a wooden deck? Er - thanks for the response but Enterprise was built with a steel deck. One issue it does raise is whether the USN used a deck paint to match an equivalent stain used on those post-war carriers which did sometimes have wood flight decks. Still interested in responses. regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: billkaja@earthlink.net Subject: Re: Shell Welder >> If I recall correctly, buried somewhere in my library is an old article on "Shell Welder" the real one from Model Boats, this issue was very old and I seem to recall even pre-dates the release of the kit as no mention was made of any kit available. The article was B&W naturally. I'll try and find it unless someone else has easy access to it. << Kevin (or whoever comes up with it first), I'd like to have a copy as well. Any chance of getting it scanned and e-mailed? Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: billkaja@earthlink.net Subject: Best Cutty Sark kit? I'm thinking about building a Cutty Sark in plastic. I did a web search, and found the following, some with price (US $) info: Revell 1/96 (OOP?) Airfix 1/130, OOP Revell 1/146, $20 Academy 1/160, Hapdong 1/160 $55 Imex 1/160, $54 Revell-Monogram 1/170, $24 Smer 1/180, $8 (yikes!) Revell Germany 1/220, $25 Revell Germany 1/350 Heller, 1/350 $6 Minicraft, 1/350 $11 Heller, 1/500 $6 I'm looking for something bigger than 1/350 scale, and less than 1/96. I don't know much about these kits-- here's the little that I do know: I know that the Academy 1/160 kit has those molded plastic ratlines, which I don't really care for, 'cuz they're always too thick. I'm guessing that all three 1/160 scale kits are about the same, but I don't know that for sure. I'm wondering how the 1/170 Revell-Monogram kit compares to the slightly larger 1/160 scale kits at about twice the price. I think at least some versions of the Airfix kit included a sort of loom for use in making the ratlines from thread. Can anyone comment on the quality/features of any of the others on my list? (I assume the Smer kit, at only $8, must be a real dog.) I'm interested in fit, level of detail, sails, and ratlines. TIA! Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: "Doug Bauer" Subject: Re: Shipboard vermin I enjoyed reading the anecdotes about cockroaches and weevils aboard ship, so I'd like to add mine. A little weevil-removal trick I learned while serving aboard USS Windham County (LST1170): at breakfast, when selecting dry cereal from those little one-serving boxes, we would choose only those cereals that sank in the milk....that made it much easier to scoop up the weevils which had floated to the surface. Doug Bauer Poway, CA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: "Peter Crandall" Subject: Ship Plans I am desperately looking for plans of Vittorio Veneto(BB) or any other ships of that same class.
