The photos do show a brown/tan color on the flight deck, my 1st impression when seeing the photos was a light shade of rust. The landing area was a different color. I do not have the issue in front of me or I would let you know the correct year/mo, but check the time of the 1st cruse and the fact that the Cuba missile crisis was her 2nd deployment. << I found an article called "Mighty Enterprise, World's Largest Ship," in the March 1963 issue of National Geographic. A photo from overhead shows the flight deck as tan with a big white "65" on the bow, and the landing strip is black with tan stripes. The superstructure looks light gray with a bluish tinge. Another photo from the island shows the landing strip as a dark blue-gray while the flight deck looks gray with tan blotches showing through - part of the flight deck clearly shows horizontal striations as though it were a wooden deck, even though I've heard it was steel. Another photo shows a Vigilante being refueled on what looks like a tan or brown lattice deck, which apparently covered certain areas of the flight deck. I have no idea how accurate the colors are in the photos - but colors are obviously judgmental because different photos showed different colors for the same thing - probably due to reflections into the camera lens. Norm Samish ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Steven P. Allen" Subject: Re: ORISKANY >> The ship is still at Beaumont MARD fleet. << If so, Sam, then the Oriskany Assoc. produced a heckuva fake story of her de-milling and scrapping. Steve Allen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Small scale cockroaches If you simply position each grain of talcum powder, don't glue it in place, you can maximize your quest for reality by gently blowing into the area and watch them scurry, just like the real thing. I am working on making the talcum powder grains gender correct. Cloning comes next. It may look like a padded cell to you, but it is home to me. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Paul & Renee Jacobs" Subject: Roach killer I read somewhere that an effective means of eliminating roaches is to mix dry flour with some plaster. The little buggers eat the stuff and their digestive juices mix with the plaster. You guessed it: eventually the critters turn to stone. I never had any need to try this so I have no idea if it really works. Paul Jacobs ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "James Hathaway" Subject: Cockroaches Yes, in the projections for a world war, cockroaches are one of two life forms expected to survive - Lawyers are the other. Jim Hathaway ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Mitsuaki Kubota Subject: Re: Gunze Sangyo QE2 Hi Gernot, Gunze QE II is a re-release of old Otaki kit, and originally issue was circa 1980. The mould was purchased by Gunze after Otaki bankrupted. I think the kit isn't available from other maker now. I myself don't have the kit, I can't judge the kit quarity. But probably good basic kit like other old Otaki mould. Hope these help. Best regards, Mitsuaki Kubota http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/hmdock/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: E-Bay Ship Plan Alert >> There are several ship modeler's plans up for sale on e-Bay. Best method is to hit the "Seller Search" button and type in "telescopeguy" Lists Royal Naval ships, tugs etc. Right now, prices are fairly modest. << I'd like to know who this Richard Walton guy is. He has outbid me on a number of ship related items Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Re: Acrylic white >> can anyone recommend a good acrylic white paint for an air brush? the paint i am using now does not cover well over gray plastic. << Ken Use a primer coat, then you can use any acrylic you want. Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Ned Barnett Subject: Re: Pontoons Jeff Thanks for this (below) - I guess I wasn't clear. I have the kit - already started (Airfix 1/72) - I'm looking for (preferably on-line) references to the real things so I can make this old dog a bit more accurate. But if I was going 1/35, this Verlinden stuff rocks! Thanks Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: ParkHobo Subject: Re: African Queen Ned You could look around for quite some time for the accessories, or you could rent the movie, make a marked study of her design and "build" the accessories yourself out of balsa or spruce, then seal the accessories in 5 or 30 minute epoxy for a gloss finish or shellac for a non-gloss finish, to seal the parts with. You can then paint the parts. I think there's some information out there about the 'African Queen,' that the movie makers had put out some years ago. Expo Models used to have a model of the 'African Queen.' A model that was built up just like the real thing, with wood. It may sound a little "unprofessional," what I mentioned earlier, but it's not. That's how the movie makers do it. And you'll have more fun doing it. After all, isn't that what us modelers are in it for anyway? Here would be a good diorama, the 'African Queens' encounter with the 'Louisa,' in storm tossed seas (for dramatic effects tell a better story), build the sea up yourself using techniques I won't get into now. Paint a backdrop of gray, rainy skies, even attach some cotton near the top of the backdrop, spray it with different shades of gray. And...even paint in a distant bolt of lightning (for real enhanced dramatic effect). I left out a lot of details, but you get the jest of it, man what a model you'd have then. Can ya picture it, now. Yea.... BK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: ED LARYEH Subject: Re: carrier - decks and submarine camouflage For the purists who really worry about whether the model looks like the real thing there is a constant check of the model and colors against published photos etc. I know. I'm one of them. It really comes to head when trying to match colors against black and white photos. For those who don't know, there is also a problem with color photographs. Most color films use dyes which react differently to various light wave-lengths. Some of them come close to what our eyes see, some are a bit off. In addition, some of the materials age. That means that an exposed film which is not developed may change color slightly. This is especially true in the visible red and visible blue extremes since the chemicals don't match the ones in the light detecting cells in our eyes. Add to that the tendency of carrier flight decks to accumulate wear and tear, rust, and dirt and you have a recipe for confusing poor modelers who just happen to have a bug for accuracy. I served in two, VALLEY FORGE and OKINAWA [helos] and visited several others. The flight deck was always grey, but the shade of grey varied, especially with age. Markings were sometimes yellow, sometimes white, sometimes both (and in the Royal Navy, you might find Black or Red as well) I would suggest that flight decks of US Post WW II carriers should be painted grey to match the taste of the modeler (NOT "Tan") But make the shade match the way you feel looks good. Personally, I like using an WEM Colorcoat enamel (Not a paid advertisement, but they seem to make a good product). That being said, and again, for the purists, US Submarines in late WWII were painted in neutral greys. The variations of the "dark grey job" and "light grey job" were gradations of grey made by mixing plain old black and white. There was limited space for paint storage on those subs and the bureau people, with great foresight, decided not to require them to stock the purple blue tinting material (TM) that gave a distinct hue to all the other US WW II camouflage colors. That means the standard color chips of 5-N, 5-0, 5-H or 5-whatever are of absolutely no value when it comes to the submarines. It would also be worthwhile to remember that MOST U.S. subs were painted overall black for most of the war. When I did a couple of subs in /9SS i mixed the grey using a standard neutral grey acrylic and added a little black or white to make it "look" right. I think the original "SHIPS-2" instructions indicate the proportions for mixing the original colors. From: Ned Barnett >> I'm unaccountably interested in Brown Water Navy and Amphibious Forces vessels. ............. ................... Also, always looking for reference sources. << Hi Ned, Me too. Why, I haven't a clue, I have no connection with the Navy except an Uncle who was a Marine on HMS Belfast... But these ugly, ugly vessels just fascinate me! Here are some sites I found with Google. http://ww2lct.org/ http://www.lstlandingcraftassoc.org/ http://www.insidelst.com/ http://ships.bouwman.com/Navy/LandingCraft/LCTs.html http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq109-4.htm http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ships/ships-lc.html I am building a 1:200 Royal Navy LCT Mk4 just now, first project for my website at www.kipperboxes.co.uk which will be a model construction 'article' site. Some 'Smellies' might remember the 1:350th scale one I did some time ago! I found an extensive range of 1:200 AFVs at www.skytrex.com which look good although I am still waiting for my first order to be delivered. The GHQ 1:285th items are amazing models, and I never had any problems with their service; (4 days, to the UK....) but I prefer the larger scale with this sort of vessel; the largest I would ever need to do would be an LST! Dream on... No doubt there are loads of other links, I know there are numerous 1:350 and 1:700 models of amphib vessels. www.floatingdrydock.com have several sets of drawings of USN types as well, if you want to scratchbuild some. Hope the links are of interest, Tim Perry www.tjpgraphics.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Abhijit" Subject: USS Carl Vinson hull color Hi I am having a lot of difficulty in matching the hull grey for the Vinson. Can someone pls give me the correct paint scheme for the hull. Also; if i can get the Tamiya/Vallejo acrylic number; i would really appreciate it. Thanks Abhijit ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: wem Subject: Re: BAINBRIDGE Foc'sl >> I respectfully disagree. That's the tannest (is that a word?) red-lead I've ever seen! In fact it is almost the exact shade of tan as the ENTERPRISE flight deck in the photo I've sent to Shane << Well, it's distinctly red, not tan on my issue. Just goes to show what happens when one converts a color photo to a printed image using inks. Both of our copies may be perfectly accurate as regards how they looked when printed. I'll try to remember to do a scan of my copy and post it off to Shane, too. Cheers, John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: Robert Lockie Subject: KGV colours confusion I may have added to the confusion with my post about KGV colours. However, as I have carried out no original research on the subject, I am happy to switch my vote to Mr Snyder on the basis that he does actually know something about it. My information was trawled from the SMML archives. Therefore I am happy to stick with painted decks - I do recall reading in some magazine article by Mike Williams that Hood had dark grey decks at the same time, so if he was correct, it is not unreasonable to assume that KGV may have done so as well. Robert Lockie Swindon UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: Gunze Sangyo QE2 >> Now, I have not heard of GS producing ships other than those excellent 1:1000 Myoko class cruisers. Is QE2 a Gunze Sangyo kit, or a rebox of a foreign make? << Gernot, I do not know if the ship model kits are originally Gunze Sangyo molds or not, but I have a 1/350 scale Lusitania model made by them. Mike Settle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Stephen Allen" Subject: Re: Tan decks I've seen some very useful posts and suggestions concerning the tan/brown deck phenomenon. I don't think it is necessarily always related to the use of wood or wood/composite deck coverings, as the same shade is clearly used on unquestionably steel surfaces - for example CVAN 65's steel mesh elevators. I'm also intrigued to see the examples mentioned on vessels other than aircraft carriers, and in the case of new vessels such as HMAS Hobart, which makes me again wonder whether it is a shipyard delivery colour or similar, given that it seems to disappear so quickly after commissioning - In Enterprise's case within a year of entering service. I'm also wondering if it is a Maritime Commission/dockyard paint rather than a USN colour. On the other hand (and in counter to all of this) it looks pretty much the same as the brown/tan-stained flight deck of Essex during the Korean war. I had even thought that it might be a holdover from one of the amphib browns from World War Two, but it could be one - or none - of them depending on which photograph you look at. Oh for a colour sample! For those of you wondering about the vagaries of colour reproduction on PCs, the image of Enterprise posted on the SMML site is just about dead bang on (for my computer at least!) in deck colour for the National Geographic article. So thank you to everybody, and I will be finishing my build of Enterprise in a deck colour matched as closely as possible (short of someone suggesting an actual FS shade) to this scheme. Should make for quite a conversation piece. And I would still be interested to run down the actual colour designation if I can. regards Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: "Ralph Nardone" Subject: Acrylic whites Hello, all... The question was asked: >> can anyone recomend a good acrylic white paint for an air brush? the paint i am using now does not cover well over gray plastic. << I like Testor Acryl Flat White. Tamiya's isn't too bad either, nor is PollyScale's. The trick to the Acryl is to spray it from the bottle, no thinning, per Testor's instructions. It took two coats to cover the medium-ish gray Accurate Miniature's plastic on a TBM I built last year where it took three of PollyScale flat white. One thing to keep in mind that it may take a few coats to cover a dark plastic with any light color paint. Cheers! Ralph ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: Darren Scannell Subject: Re: ENTERPRISE Flight deck >> Bit late getting into this but finally got around to doing a bit of digging, I have the Big Es first cruise book (the Med Deployment) After careful study of the photos and the few dates included it would clearly indicate that prior to deployment she did have a brownish (very brownish) flight deck. << Kevin, Would you be willing to scan some of those photos that show the tan deck and send them to me?
