If you have an interest in early subs, there are a number of great photos along with some very impressive 3D modeling profiles, sections and cutaways. The demo cd will also give you a "Virtual Tour" of the Holland subs (which served in USN, RN, Dutch, Russian and Japanese service). The history section is pretty basic, but for a free CD, it is worth having To request one, go to the IBM site and search on "The Holland Project". This was solidified when I had a dream last night (seriously) about making a model of a couple of modelers with RC ship models ... Believe in dreams or not, but hey - I got the message. I'm back to planning dioramas where figures (probably my old faithful Tamiya 1/20 pit crew figure sets) are interacting with 1/700th, 1/350th, 1/288th and 1/144th scale models (which are forced-perspective stand-ins for other models in larger scales. I've got WEM's Fairmile MBT and the Elco boats in 1/350 that will very likely be my in-the-water boats (for at least one diorama) - and I'll be sure to give WEM great reviews when I write up and get published the "making of" that particular diorama for whatever modeling mag I can persuade to publish ... But I want to do more. In the past, I've done these mixed-scale dioramas including the "Crash of '83" that I wrote about (here, I think) and another mixed-scale mini-diorama of a 1/200th Stealth bombing a 1/700th Iraqi airfield, complete with Skywave hanger and MiGs. I've also done a neat little boxed diorama of me, working in my garage hobby room, with my (first) wife leaving me because I couldn't quit. The "me" (both figures were 1/35th French Resistance Fighters - a Heller set, IIR) was airbrushing a catapult float plane of indeterminant origins, while my 1/35th dog (a portrait of Tramp) looked on. Oddly, my then-wife didn't get the hint . But I enjoyed the small boxed diorama, and I want to do more (though none with wives leaving - this one's the keeper). OK - I say that to say this. I'm sure that some of you have set aside, for no particular reason, itty-bitty airplanes and tanks and vehicles and such. Some will have come with model ships (catapult planes, deck-based carrier planes, etc.) or from packaged sets of planes (Skywave, Tamiya, etc.) ... stuff that you no longer need. Others might come from wargaming sets (the tiny armor, etc.), or from the Goddess alone knows where else. What I'd like to do is try to persuade you to send me those itty-bits of plastic or resin or metal or whatever - ONLY the ones you'll never need, ONLY the ones you'll never sell. Hey, we're talking charity here, folks - but the kind of charity that doesn't hurt you (I only want the stuff you'll never miss). If you want to discuss postage and such, you can reach me at interned@anv.net. If you want to just send me your stuff, my address is: 420 N. Nellis Blvd., A3-276 Las Vegas, NV 89110 AND - if you're a vendor AND if I write this up in one of the trades (I've contributed a number of times to FineScale and IPMS, where I used to serve as editor) I'll surely mention your generosity and review your products. Thanks for your help ... All the best Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: NedWriter Subject: Other model discussion lists like SMML? Anybody know of "sister" (brother?) lists that discuss: a. Aircraft modeling b. Armor modeling c. Figure modeling d. Hi Fellow Modellers, (ladies included!) I am venturing into constructing a resin kit and was wondering if anyone can tell me what sort of glue to use? Also, should the model be "primed" at all prior to painting? Also!.... are enamels paints ok to use or should one use acrylic? Many thanks, Steve from sunny Adelaide, South Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Fkbrown90 Subject: Re: Cutty Sark I have the remnants of an old CUTTY SARK plastic kit from way back (and I mean WAY back, say 30 or 35 years or so ago), although I cannot say who manufactured it. When I assembled it, I used the wrong kind of glue and it fell apart before I got to the rigging (remember, I'm the guy who took 68 years to finish my WW1 subchaser, an as yet unchallenged record), and I abandoned the project. I scrounged the blocks for my CHARLES W. MORGAN whale ship's rigging (an 18-year rush job). I will be glad to give the remains to anyone in the Boston area who can use them. Contact me off post at fkbrown@aol.com and we can arrange for a meeting, and a personally conducted Grand Tour of the world famous Holbrook International Antique Auto, Model Ship Museum and Gallery, and Maritime Vermin Research Laboratory (during off peak hours, to avoid the crowds, of course). The Phantom Flotilla by Peter Shankland (ISBN581 11580 2) tells the tale of the British efforts to sink the German Gunboat Hedwig von Wissmann on Lake Tanganyika. Since the railways were denied to the British this involved transporting two motor through hundreds of miles of bush and over mountains. Mimi and Toutou, the two motor boats, formed the basis of the flotilla. The first battle was with the Kingani, which was captured and incorporated in the British flotilla. This was the first German warship to be captured and transferred to the British Navy. She was renamed HMS Fifi. The final battle was was settled with Wissmann being sunk. The circumstances of the sinking are even more unbelievable/amazing than those portrayed in the Africa Queen film. Another first was registered with the capture of Wissmann's German ensign. The second book is The Germans Who Never Lost by Edwin P Hoyt (ISBN 0 427 00302 4). This tells the tale of the events leading up to the sinking of the Konigsburg in the Rufiji River. The crew unshipped the 105mm guns and fought on to the end of the war as guerillas and assualt troops. They had some involvement in naval maters on Lake Tanganyika missing the opportunity to sink Mimi and Tou Tou on the day they were launched on the Lake as a result of a breakdown in communications. They could also have tipped the battle with Wissmann in the german favour. They armed the Graf von Gottzen with one of their 105mms and arrived on the scene of the battle minutes after the British ships had left. At the Armistise only 15 of the crew were left with one remaining gun. Both books are jolly good reads. I just can't get over it; a WWII CV in 1/350th scale! And, its flaws notwithstnding, the kit is damn nice. I'm happy as a pig in sh...well, you get the idea. With the hull halves put together and the bilge keels replaced, my Hornet is ready to receive her armor belts. Here's the question: what were the dimensions of these things? I know they were quite thin, but how wide were they? How long? Also, how far did they extend above the waterline? There's a beautiful build of the 1/350 BWN (Blue Water Navy) Hornet by Steve Brejnak in the SteelNavy gallery at http://www.steelnavy.com/bwnhornet.htm which seems to show the belts extending well above the waterline, but photos I've seen seem to show them much lower, barely extending above the boot topping.
