I have a good assortment of WEM colourcoats, including deck blue 20 and flight deck stain 21. Would one of these be close? Thanks, Bruce ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Kerry L. Jang" Subject: Nichrome Wire Hello Gene, The nichrome to buy is the NICHROME 80. For 1:700 ships, I suggest anything smaller than 40 BSG (e.g., size 41, 42) ought to be OK. It depends on how fine you want the rigging. The smallest guage I have on hand is 40 guage or .0031". I just put it up against the 1:700 kit I'm working on (WEM's HMS SUSSEX) kit and it is just a slightly a bit too heavy for 1:700 rigging by my eye. Size 40 is a shade thinner than a human hair. The nice thing about nichrome wire is that it can be pulled straight and it is very strong, even in the very finest guages. Hope this helps! Best, Dr. Kerry Jang ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Kerry L. Jang" Subject: Nichrome Wire II Hello again Gene, I forgot to add that for ships in 1:400 and larger, you could take two or more strands of the nichrome wire and spin it together on a lathe or DREMEL tool. This makes a nice representation of wire rope. The more strands you spin together, the thicker the "rope". I usually spin up several strands of "rope" about 1 to 2 feet long and paint it. I've used HUMBROL and acrylics to paint the "rope" and all is fine. Get some good, pointed jewlellers tweezers (Dumond or Peer Vigor brand) to help rig your ship. A bit expensive, but they really do behave like extensions of your fingers. Sure beats the pair of tweexers I used to steal out of my wife's vanity bag... Dimi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Randy Ward Subject: Re: Cockroaches (again) Seen on CNN online... QE2 inspection finds roaches, mold Wednesday, January 15, 2003 FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) -- The Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner failed a federal health inspection after regulators found cockroaches in the kitchen, mold residue on ice makers and blocked drains in the nursery. The ship, one of the world's most famous cruise liners, will be allowed to continue sailing, and there is no fine, though a re-inspection may be requested to clear the ship's name. Cunard Line officials said there were no unusual circumstances that explained the inspection failure. "It's unacceptable from our point of view," Cunard President Pamela Conover said Tuesday. Worn or malfunctioning equipment cited in the inspection report was being replaced, she said, and workers were getting rid of the cockroaches. The discovery was made when the ship docked at Port Everglades two weeks ago on the first leg of a four-month world cruise, despite greater sanitary precautions taken throughout the industry because of a spike in gastrointestinal illnesses. The ship has had cases of stomach illness, but not enough to be considered an outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. CDC and Cunard officials did not immediately return calls Wednesday for additional comment. The ship, known as the QE2, left Fort Lauderdale on January 7. It is expected to dock next Saturday in Los Angeles, where it could be re-inspected. Inspectors who toured the ship on Jan. 3 gave the QE2 a grade of 85 on a scale from 1 to 100. Grades below 86 are unsatisfactory. Health authorities rarely block a ship from sailing after a failed inspection unless there is a drastic problem, such as a broken refrigerator. That was not the case with the QE2. Of about 600 ship inspections done by the CDC in the past two years, only five have scored "not satisfactory." The QE2 previously failed inspection at Port Everglades two years ago when it scored 79, and again in April 1997, when it scored 80. The aging ship, which made its first trans-Atlantic voyage in 1969, has been overhauled several times. Cunard, whose majority owner is Miami-based Carnival Corp., plans to take the QE2 out of trans-Atlantic service next year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Diodor Subject: News Flash From the Ft.Myers News-Press, Thursday, January 16, 2003: "FORT LAUDERDALE -- The Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner failed its most recent inspection by federal health regulators, who found cockroaches in the ship's kitchen..." I been looking at that site all morning and cannot find where to request a CD. Can you help me? I built the model of PLUNGER, a Holland sub, that is on display at the Sub Museum at Grotton. Thanks Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Reynaga, Tim@EDD" Subject: propellers for Potemkin >> 1) i am building a 400 scale model of the Potemkin of 1905 ill fame - the propellers supplied with the kit were miscast and are little better than Xs i plan to get another kit - (hey! they are cheaper than the paint) but i suspect the propellors will be the same can anybody lead me to 400 scale propellors of early 20th century vintage for a battleship? or a reasonable facsimile thereof? << A possible source for your early steel navy props might be the Revell Emden/Dresden. The Emden kit has 2 and the Dresden 4, all four bladed and very nice. The larger 1/350 scale cruiser parts just might work for your smaller 1/400 scale battleship. Although raiding the Revell kit is a rather expensive alternative, you could still do the cruiser build as a waterline. Perhaps some SMMLie out there has already done such a build and has some surplus for you... Hi Lionel, A must is always HOBBYCO on Pitt Street (where the Mall part is) in the CBD area and above the basement HMV Shop (Music CD's / DVD's etc), don't have a street number but it's up escalator on the first floor. Was there last month and they've extended their already considerable display area. Enjoy. There's a few more out in the suburbs worth a look, try under "Hobbies" in the Yellow Pages if you have a car to get around in. For a good military type bookshop, try Napoleon's, also on Pitt Street on the other side, about ten to fifteen minutes walking towards Central Train station and away from the Opera House, or a better one with a huge selection is out in Parramatta on (about No. 331) Church Street, can't recall the shop name. About another ten to fifteen minute walk from the train station. Worth a look if you're after books.
